    crossposting this.

    OH SHIT!!!!

So... there's this amazing game out there that everyone should play, called The Outer Wilds. Most importantly, people should go into it blind, without knowing anything about it other than it's a charming exploration game.

A few months ago, I heard they were doing DLC for it. And I had no fucking clue how. I mean... to put it succinctly, Outer Wilds is a very "Complete" game. It tells a story. On its terms. So how would you fit in DLC?

Well, this trailer doesn't spoil anything other than sights and locales and set pieces and such... just echoes of what the expansion will be.

But the DLC... the game's ONLY DLC. Has me hyped as hell to learn what the Echoes of the Eye involve.

My partner got me that game for my birthday and I finally started getting to playing this month.

It's got some neat moments so far. I'll have to go over the in-game journal next time to make sure I'm getting it all.

Haven't reached any bits that scream "Game of the Year" yet. Looking forward to that.

I bounced off outerwilds twice and now it’s gone from gamepass so I doubt I’ll ever play it. I don’t know why but I could just never get into it despite appreciating it’s set up

I'm in the same boat, I think it's one of those titles where I have to pick a weekend and go "okay, I'm playing it through" and then do it, because my post-work brain apparently cannot hold focus long enough for it.

I don't like the audio aesthetics of the Outer Wilds.

It's got what I think of as "artsy-indie-twang" which makes me think of all these Indie games that wanna deal with "heavy real-life issues" like someone's wife having dementia or their kid having cancer.

And I'm like... "I'm just tryin' to have a nice time here, man. You're bringin' me down." I don't wanna play "the first 10 minutes of UP - the video game".

And although I have not uncovered the mystery behind the Outer Wild's story, it's givin' off those vibes.

Did the Soviets do a bunch of stuff in space first? Yes, but most of the time that's because they were rushing instead of doing it properly, hence their list of successes is filled with death and fuck-ups.

First animal in space!: Laika died within hours of take off due to a technical fault, and Russia then lied about it until 2002.
First probe to Mars!: It failed on landing and never transmitted anything back.
First space station!: The first attempt to hard dock failed. The second succeeded, but the entire crew then died of asphyxia due to technical fault before re-entry. Funny how 'The only people ever to die above the von Karman line' is never cited in these lists of the USSRs big swinging dick space achievements.

Anyway, the way you tell America won the space race is the existence of a cadre within the ranks of socialists/communists who performatively hate the entire concept of space and space travel to a psychopathically deranged degree, who simply have no capitalist equivalent:

    https://thebaffler.com/salvos/schmaltz-stars-lavin

    https://thenewinquiry.com/manifesto-of-the-committee-to-abolish-outer-space/

yo so i'm not some psychopathically deranged socialist space-hater or anything, but this is a really weird rant

I have yet to complete Outer Wilds but the thing is that I need to devote significant brainpower to it, and I want to set aside real time and attention for it. I’ve gotten like an hour in and thought it was real cool! I’m sure I’ll love the rest!

That and uh, I have this real deep seated fear of tsunamis and big waves, and Outer Wilds manages to spike that pretty hard

oh buddy in that the vibes are not misplaced for what the game is going for. which might not be what you're looking for, which is cool! but it's definitely where that game is headed.

I feel like Outer Wilds is much more in the vein of classic sci fi than like, the "indie game vibe"

But then I also unironically vibe with banjo music so

I want to experience Outer Wilds, but I hate the controls so bad. But I don't think a let's play would be a fulfilling experience.

Basically I want a friend who is good at gamepads to sit on the couch and play the game while I try and help solve the mysteries, is there an app for that?

I get the impression Outer Wilds would not hit for me as much as other people if it's trying to elicit feelings as the main goal. I've tried other games like that and they end up falling flat because I may as well be a robot in that respect.

  • durandal4532durandal4532 Registered User regular
I think that a lot of people have felt strongly about The Outer Wilds, but I think that primarily it's trying to be something that lets you solve puzzles by having fun epiphanies. And to motor about in a fun space playroom.

I think it works well at being that and also giving some sense of awe and melancholy in an impressively tiny package.

But like if for example Gone Home is a "game trying to elicit feeling as the main goal" and... chess ... is the other end of that scale I'd say it's... that's not actually a useful way to scale things. On a scale from Gone Home -> Chess, it's The Outer Wilds I guess!

Where are you pulling chess from. Some games focus on eliciting emotional responses, some don't, and I don't appreciate the air quotes when I have seen many people explicitly say Outer Wilds is one of the former and they enjoyed it because it has a heavy focus on that exact aspect

It's quotes quotes! Not air quotes. I guess they read like air quotes but I just meant to use the same phrase.

Chess was selected as like a game that's unlikely to elicit strong emotional reactions from the completion of the story. Then I realized wait a second, that's not actually a useful scale since it covers too broad a range in too many directions!

I guess I was more thinking that while I think there were some fun and affecting story beats, my experience of The Outer Wilds bore a lot of similarities to my experience of Hexcells. Lots of fun 'aha!' moments rather than like weeping. I guess I think while they did a great job providing an emotional underpinning, it very much is a project that I think was primarily about developing an interesting series of nested puzzles. All the planets are a little puzzle that's part of a big puzzle!

One of the nice thing about folklore and fairy tales and such is that some things don't need an explanation or a proper foreshadowing or whatever. Sometimes a dude's just got a magic ox that talks. Why? Because.

I loved Gone Home because I went in totally blind and the arc of the story surprised me. I went in not knowing if it would be a horror game at the end or what and I went through it meticulously managing which lights I turned on/off and pouring over every room with a fine-toothed comb. As a result, I completely absorbed myself into the story of the family and the beats hit just right.

My concern with the Outer Wilds is that while piloting the ship and solving puzzles feels intuitive to me, it kind of requires me to clear my head to do so. Unfortunately, that interrupts the story for me and the bits and pieces I'm getting don't always cement or fall together. I know there are at least 4 aliens writing these branching text-logs at each-other on the walls and then one astronaut on each of the planets playing their instruments but keeping the names and personalities straight is next-to-impossible.

When I think I've finished it I may just need to watch a video summary or read a wiki article to tell me what epiphany I was supposed to be having. We'll see.

This is how I "played" Until Dawn. My husband (bf at the time) played the game while I made all the dialogue choices. Same for the opening of Disco Elysium, which I later played all the way through. We did the opening bit of Cyberpunk that way, too. So there isn't an app for that, but it's a perfectly valid way to work through a game, frankly.
