Lasting loss of taste and smell is indeed damage that a covid infection can leave you with, that's sadly just a normal, common, seemingly permanent side-effect from it. It's unknown if those senses will ever recover in people who have lost them and not recovered them naturally in a few weeks after the infection is fought off, and it's incredibly psychologically devastating for those who have been stricken with that issue. A quick google search suggests there's not much data about autoimmune disease responses to the vaccine in general, GBS aside, but infection with the actual virus is certainly going to be much worse for an autoimmune condition so the recommendation is to get the vaccine even if you have such a condition. Your friend doesn't sound like he's amenable to hearing anything that contradicts his existing narrative about vaccines, but here's an article about that from doctors at the University of Colorado along those lines:
    https://www.uchealth.org/today/expert-discusses-autoimmune-diseases-and-covid-19-vaccines/

Having caught covid for real does not confer the same degree of immunity that the vaccine does, so it's still important to get vaccinated even after having had an infection.

e: ah that lancet paper is hot off the presses, that would be more up-to-date than the information in my link.

Losing your sense of taste and smell permanently is really terrifying though. God. I empathize with what he's going through, for the little that that's worth.
I really hope it recovers someday.

I would actually be embarrassed to admit the last time I'd been to the dentist, if it weren't for the fact that I literally can't remember

Frankly I can't believe they haven't all fallen out at this point

I mean, as long as you're looking after them, and don't have some massive genetic predisposition to bad gums, they shouldn't. Dentists don't, like, glue people's teeth in more securely during a check up.

This is actually kinda why I haven't made it a priority. My teeth don't look perfect by any means, but I haven't had a cavity or other mouth-related issue my entire adult life, everything seems fine in there.

Not a great excuse and I could definitely use a deep cleaning, but eh

However, he also said he had COVID previously and thus has antibodies. I'm not sure what to say except the tweet that led me to the one above surprised me in that what it said about the band's vocalist, Dexter Holland, is true.

Hey smarter then me folks. Does anyone know anybody who has a autoimmune disorder and got the vaccine? I have a friend who seems to have had (he thinks) an inflammatory reaction when he got COVID and lost his sense of taste and smell. It hasn't come back yet (though he also permanently damaged it with a stupid "treatment" he read about online). He said he's afraid the vaccine will give him another reaction and he'll lose the rest of his senses. He said his doctor agrees with him, but he's also told me this is his forth doctor because the other one's kept telling him things he disagrees with and wouldn't prescribe him the medication he decided he needed through his own research.

Yes he's gone off the deep end and I'm trying to get some testimonials that if folks with actual auto immune disorders got the vaccine, him and his suspected one will be fine.

My sister has GBS, got an AZ shot, and the reaction was bad enough that she's banned from having the second (or any of the mRNA options). Hospitalized for a week, still only partially recovered ten weeks later, still lost the use of her hands due to nerve pain. (It's gradually coming good, and they're now optimistic her recovery will be measured in months and not years, but it was looking pretty nasty there for a time)

Now, this is anecdotal, n=1, and it's still probably far less severe than the effects of covid would be, but I am a little surprised the CDC is recommending GBS patients get vaccinated given that at least in Australia, the medical advice is not to get any vaccine at all (even the flu jab).

Edit: this was really more a response to the GBS rec than your friend, who is clearly off his nut and not making responsible decisions. My sister is also a public health researcher with a degree in epidemiology, and after extensive self research and consultation with her specialist, thinks that the Novavax may be less risky for GBS patients. So waiting for that to be available might be one option, if he could be trusted to stay very safe in the meantime, but if he's at the point of taking dubious online remedies then I dunno if that's on the cards.

Absolutely do not tell your friend this, bucketman, but at one point they were worried that she was going to lose her vision because her pupils were totally unresponsive. Eventually realised (after an emergency MRI) that it was her immune system frying the nerves in her eyeballs.

    GBS! Its no fun!

before adding that he is supportive of anyone who resists getting the vaccine for any number of reasons, from fear of side effects to distrust of the medical and governmental establishment.

he also claims that "half the population is having a shockingly different reaction to these jabs than what was expected" which is just outright nonsense. Legitimate concerns re: GBS or no, dude's peddling antivaxx bullshit and can fuck off into the sun.

Vivienne has an autoimmune disorder and other than using her second shot as an excuse to sleep all day and leave me with the kid she was fine.

I got my first jab today, it ended up being a little chaotic since there was a delta case in the state and they made the room socially distanced, but I purposely brought the kid along and I got to skip all the major lines.

I am just in here to scream into the void that I am just SO FUCKING DONE with vaccine-hesitant folks.

The following is NOT targeting anyone in this thread.

Like, yeah, I had worries about the vaccines at first, too - literally ANYONE would - but I worked through those anxieties like a RESPONSIBLE FUCKING ADULT and now you and your “I’m so much smarter than these sheeple getting vaxxed cuz they’re so scared or brainwashed” ass DIRECTLY benefits from me working through my own cognitive dissonance and getting the shot, while you sit there justifying your own inaction by inhaling your own FUCKING farts.

(Exceptions of course apply to people who have specific medical conditions that preclude vaccination.)

Being a therapist and also a shit-giving member of a far-reaching community is breaking my GODDAMN brain.

I’ve had so many polite, civilized, understanding conversations to help some hesitant folks cross the line. So many. I’m so done. I’m done.

EDIT: I’m not done. But I am so fucking tired of people who have no insight into their own shit and don’t care if it hurts someone they can’t see.

While I think everything except the GBS stuff from that guy is a hot pile of bullshit, the CDC has really, really, really not done themselves any favors lately with respect to how much I'll believe anything they have to say about managing COVID, in pretty much any regards.

It's not even a "previous administration" thing; the way they just dumped the mask mandate when we were still so low on actually-delivered-vaccinations was so, so, so stupid.

I don't know that I'm at the point where a CDC source makes me more skeptical of a claim, but I'm getting close.

Someone in a FB group I'm in was voicing vaccine concerns and said "I've lost several people personally to the vaccine." and I wanted to say "... No you haven't." because that is clearly bullshit, but you can't really argue with a statement like that. They can claim anything and you can't disprove it so there's no point engaging. It's exhausting.

    If you still need examples:

I have Ulcerative Colitis, and I'm currently on an immuno-suppressant medication. I had a little bit of nausea after my second shot but otherwise nothing. I had a worse reaction from getting the Shingles vaccine, which knocked me out for a day or so.

Those people they "lost" probably just don't answer the phone any more when they call because the people are so sick of their bullshit. (is the most kind interpretation I can come up for that)

Generally speaking, if you’ve got an autoimmune disorder and are medicated for it with an immunosuppressant, you are actually less likely to get side effects to the vaccine purely because your suppressed immune system will “process” the vaccine more slowly than someone with a healthier immune system. Hence, you don’t get as sick afterwards.

If anything, the risk is more that the vaccine may not be as effective for you.

This is all according to my rheumatologist, who actually told me to skip the next weekly dose of my immunosuppressant after getting a shot.

I’m sorry your sister had to go through that. The CDC mentions GBS specifically because there were no reactions to the vaccines in the testing, other than one from the J&J (to note: this was the same rate as the placebo in the study).
    Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS)
People who have previously had GBS may receive a COVID-19 vaccine. To date, no cases of GBS have been reported following vaccination in participants in the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials. One case of GBS was reported in a vaccinated participant in the Johnson & Johnson Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine clinical trial (compared to one GBS case among those who received placebo). With few exceptions, the independent Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) general best practice guidelines for immunization do not include a history of GBS as a precaution to vaccination with other vaccines.

The offspring drummer guy is also using anti-vaxxer language in his statement specifically, which is why I called him full of shit.

Yeah no, drummer guy is a total whackjob.
And nobody should take extreme outliers as a reason not to get vaxxed, sorry if that came off as "don't do it!"

I usually don't even like to mention her situation because too many people will seize on it for the wrong reasons. That was more a 3am ramble on "hey here's a weird story", triggered by the GBS mention, (which is why I edited to try to make clear I'm not supporting b-mans friend in his anti vaxx nonsense). Definitely discuss with your doc if you have reasons to be worried, but as Viv said most people with immune disorders are absolutely fine with the vaxx. I have one myself and had no issues other than exhaustion and a light fever.
