Noah Caldwell-Gervais takes a thorough look at Resident Evil.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZUwmfeHB58

    A very thorough look.

Noah should stop, or be made to stop with the complete disdain for edited product. Why not split the video into eras of the games? Like 1-3 as the first video? That would probably be 3+ hours!

Nah, keep doing things the way that people like. Besides the Youtube chapters clearly split things up.

In fact I kind of love that he addressed the criticism about editing and audio quality in a video that takes place outside near a highway on a windy day.

...like it has to be a deliberate troll right?

Dude produces some of the best writing games around. He's also a great voice, so i don't mind that he records in long chunks, with the occasional mistake, rather than doing some of the hyper editted, every sentence is perfect, style that a lotta other people have.

Personally i can handle him dropping all 7 and a half hours of content at once, since ill just be taking breaks anyway

DO people (in general) like it? I'm comparing his channel and Patreon to other people who put out similar content, and I wonder how badly he's chopping his potential audience off at the knees. Please note, I'm not saying he should change the actual content of the videos. I just think professional caliber audio editing and literally ANY level of thought about video length should be considered. Is there really an argument that his dedicated fans would like the videos less if he took multiple audio takes to state his script in a clear manner throughout? That he take script passes to remove thoughts expressed 5 or 6 different times already? The opposing example would be Tim Rogers, who also makes obnoxiously long videos, but is also extremely careful with editing them, while Noah seems to do none whatsoever.

Edit: Actually watching this video provided, yes this seems positively adversarial. "Oh, you think my audio quality is unprofessional? How about a video to explain myself where I record wind noise and get distracted by cars, then state that you can have your money back if you think it sucks?! How about that??" It seems ungenerous to take critical feedback and respond with "take all your money back, then." Is he trying to make it a truism that his only REAL fans are those who unquestioningly accept every bad decision he makes? That's certainly a choice to make.

oh saw an article about that

    the TL;DR
Still, this entire charade has made one thing crystal clear: The internet isn’t made for you or I. Once upon a time, maybe, but not anymore. Pretty much everything on the web—articles meant to game Google’s front page, audio files designed to blitz from TikTok clip to TikTok clip, videos that exist for the sole purpose of juicing social media ad networks—is crafted for the “eyes” of algorithms and bots, a joyless paint-by-numbers machine that’s working exactly as intended. The internet’s hosting a big, endless, money-making party. We’re not invited.

Well, I thought it was funny. Which might have been the extent of the point. I think he's setting boundaries for his viewers. He has a thing he wants to make, X way, so for now, please don't purchase the product and push for Y way.

Dan just achieved 32/32 non-shortcut records in Mario Kart 64. He only reached 31/32 once, and converted it to 32/32 later the same day.

ok, there's a moment in the noah video where he finishes off a long thing about re4 and then his dog starts barking and he says "fucking god damnit" and then cuts to the next game

    i love it

I normally consider multi-hour youtube videos a sign that the creator needed to cut more chaff, but with Caldwell-Gervais he consistently manages to be on-topic, interesting, and meaningful for the entire length of his videos no matter how long they get, so I'm assuming that'll be the case with this video too.

From what I've heard from video essay-type youtubers, splitting your video into parts is the single worst thing you can do on the platform. For multi-part videos, there tends to be a dip in views between the first and second (and further more so on third and fourth) part, and even when it isn't a huge dip, Youtube's genius algorithm sees it as a downward trend for your channel and starts to de-prioritize promoting you in recommends and such (since you're on a downward trajectory, you're not going to make them any money, so they'll promote someone who will).

I would think that depends on how meaty each part is. If you have two 45 minute parts, yeah maybe there's a benefit to making one long video out of it. At seven plus hours, he could have made three satisfying two hour long videos and given each space to breath and get their own ads. As an example from another media analysis channel, Lindsay Ellis made three Hobbit videos and yes, each one dropped in viewership... but they're all still TREMENDOUSLY popular and full length in their own right. Same with Omegaverse (less of a drop there between parts). Ultimately, if he's satisfied with the way things are, that's the way they'll be. Doesn't mean I have to agree with the decision making process there.

slamming out 18 mini essays in sequence does allow for some great transitions between topics, particularly the one from reo2 to re4 in this case

The problem with very long videos is the stupid YouTube app decides I'm not watching a video anymore after like 20 minutes of doing something else and I have to find my spot again

Yeah, even something as simple as going to the video from a search instead of from history can delete your saved place. If YouTube was rock solid on this point, but it's incredibly not. My "favorite" YouTube quirk of late: randomly signing out of my signed in profile on my Xbox. I actually watched it happen during a forced ad play recently. Then, I have to put in an access code on my phone to get re-signed in, how do app designers stay employed...

I have a problem with this argument, in that it dodges the hard questions for the easy answers.

Or to put it simply, Bobby Kotick is as much symptom as he is cause. That doesn't mean that he doesn't hold responsibility for allowing this environment on his watch - but at the same time, we need to acknowledge that the rot at Blizzard predates Activision, predates Vivendi, and was there when they were an independent darling. What happened there is emblematic of deeper issues in the industry that go beyond the boardroom.
