yeah they discovered them deep in SR-388, but also accidentally gave them the means to spread across the planet and potentially get off the planet and had to make metroids as an emergency measure to stop them.

but then metroids also became a problem

I had thought they had the metroids mostly under control... up until Mother Brain went rogue.

Well. No. They had Zebes under control. Mother Brain had nothing to do with SR-388.

Chozo are definitely that brand of mad science where if the laws of physics won’t allow it, why, they’ll just run the polarity through this parallel dimension full of relatively harmless entities using the power of an unstable star close to super nova. Don’t worry! They’ll stabilise the star by siphoning the energy from another, even less stable star.

Sometimes they will offer you a nice, juicy powerup orb in the hands of a statue. But then when you grab it, the statue stands up and punches you right in the gut. This violates the intergalactic "No Take Backs" treaty.

TBF only two of those planet explosions was her fault and that dimension was basically actually hell.

TBH I've kinda lost track as to what sort of destruction happened during the Prime games

In the mainline series, the only planetary explosion she's really at fault for is SR388. Zebes was just Mother Brain being a sore loser. Twice.

Prime 1: Planet remained intact. The impact crater collapsed when she took out the Metroid Prime.

Prime 2: Dark Aether dimension collapsed when she took all the light energy out of it and back to Original Recipe Aether. That was gonna happen one way or another, considering the Ing war happening.

Prime 3: Most planets in the game survived, but Phaaze was super destroyed in order to take out the Phazon threat. One of the planets got a nuke dropped on it to break an energy barrier, but apparently it's otherwise fine.

I thought that was the sky city robot world, since Samus couldn’t get into the barrier around the Leviathan otherwise.

the Metroid Prime Chozo are the cool mysterious precursors that ascended to a higher plane of existence but turned into mad phazon-corrupted ghosts

the Zebes Chozo are like... Samus' birdman parents
they're not even dead or anything (excluding some that died for narrative reasons in spinoff comics, RIP Gray Voice), they just went into hiding what with the whole "hunted by invading space pirates" thing
I'm pretty sure Old Bird is still alive, at least, and he's basically the Bird Dad

and the Samus Returns ones are the cruelly betrayed Jurassic Park scientists, as mentioned

I could have sworn that was their backstory even before the prime games but perhaps I am simply remembering my extrapolation of the lore in the prime games to the rest of the series

like there's gotta be SOME reason the galaxy used to be ruled by the super advanced bird people and now they're seemingly all gone, and they have been gone long enough to mainly be known as legends among the current galactic civilizations, with only ruins left behind

There is a possibly canon backstory manga.

Basically, IIRC, they renounced war so Mother Brain had no problem slaughtering them all with the space pirates.

This is the same comic where Ridley…eats Samus’ parents.

I think some of them are fine. Maybe all of them once Phaze blows up?

You can get updates on Talon IV and Aether in the observatory in Sky City in MP3 saying both planets are almost back to normal, and that's before Phaze pops.

The general feel I always got was that the Chozo had been like a Mega Empire back in the day off the back of being like four technological revolutions above everyone else, but eventually went "guys. Guys what the fuck are we doing", so they renounced war and fucked off to live in remote enclaves in harmony with the universe and stuff, rather than break the galaxy. And that by the time Metroid the games happen, almost all these enclaves are gone, due to simple time or to getting wiped out by various assholes or to ascending to a higher plane or whatever, so Samus might very well be the last of the Chozo.

Which would indeed present her whole crusade to destroy the metroids before evil pirates can use them for bad things in a rather cool light. Because if the Chozo made these, and she's the last Chozo, well, she's the only one left to take responsibility here.

Makes you wonder if she knew the Metroids origins beforehand. She clearly didn’t know about the X, but maybe she knew that the Metroids were a Chozo creation.

New Metroid trailer, spoilering just in case.
That missile swarm attack is super cool.

It's not 100% clear to me if that's supposed to be a real live Chozo or something like the Chozo statues you fight in Super Metroid. Maybe the main one in the cutscene bits is live and the other ones seen fighting in gameplay clips are statues.

While super annoying, best to assume anything from the Prime trilogy will be treated as non-canon.

The thing I’m looking forward to is the new voice of Samus as leaked by my uncle, which is that her voice actress is from Belfast. I’ve tried to turn this post into a funny bit twice now but I would actually just like any video game character to be Northern Irish.
