    Invites Are Out!

    Waaagh!!!

    No, you're not dreaming!

We've sent out a handful of invites to folks who have been waiting for a while now and met our current eligibility requirements. This includes event attendees, contest winners, and various other associations.

This is just the beginning, keep your eyes peeled - there are more to come!

You know some times I hate them for even letting me know that others got invites. The 'there are more to come' part is just cruel.

    Huh.

Crazy. Nameable squigs confirmed by Paul in the monthly podcast?

Don't most MMOs allow you to name your pets?

The mainstream ones do. I just never figured I'd be naming a squig, so much as I'd be climbing inside it.

I would name my Xabober or Jaboken in homage.

See, I got one of those too, and when I went to check the beta center, I found I was actually in the beta.

I never did get a "Welcome to Beta!" email, for some reason, however. Quite the pleasent surprise.

So, about the Squiggs. Are there different types? Maybe ones with different stats/abilities/colors/features? It'd kinda suck to have everyone running around with the same squigg.

Also: am I the only one really disappointed by the latest video over on Mythic's site? The PvP just looks so slow and boring and wooden.

I'm excited as hell about this game, but... that shit was not exciting.

They shouldn't have attempted to release a video like the VotM for this month. I honestly have no idea why they did, with so much of the animation and shit still being worked on.

Maybe Mythic actually thinks many gamers are more interested in the RvR content and won't get hung up about the game looking like DaoC graphics/animation wise.

    They be some what wrong.

It's one thing to not have state-of-the-art graphics. WoW managed to pull it off. Good art direction can compensate for a lot of technical shortcomings. Plus, that means I won't need to sink $2000 into a new system to run this game well. So, bonus points for that.

What I was referring to, though, is having just a bunch of people standing there, slowly and awkwardly trading blows. There wasn't any real movement, no fluidity to the animations, lots of idle time in between attacks, etc. It just felt stiff. Sort of like the opposite of WoW, where things move so fast that you don't have time to appreciate how little effort went into animating combat.

That, and having that many people standing still in such a small area without a wizard hitting the lot of them with Volcanic Pillar is just wrong.

Well, most PvP videos are going to look like that until they get player-filmed ones, in all fairness. They probably make sure people stand still, just so you can see the models and it's not too chaotic. I would rather have more going on, myself, but it makes a kind of sense.

I could really care less about the graphics, and am more interested in the RvR aspect.

The VIotM doesn't fluently demonstrate RvR, good graphics, or animation. It's not like this video was a huge success in the RvR dept.

"ok, so everyones running at each other? Ok, got it"

Seriously tho, I'm not hung up about the graphics at all, I realize more polish will go into both the animations and graphics. I just think it's a bad move to release a video of content which should drastically improve over the course of development. I'd be much more intrigued with a huge info/concept art dump or something.

Animations are extremely important for me.

That's the only reason why I have an undead female rogue. Fuck racials, I just love the front-flip.

And as long as this game looks about as good as WoW in the graphics department (which isn't asking a lot) I'll be happy.

How much slower? I really hope they don't keep it as slow since the game is essentially selling itself quite heavily on the pvp aspect. Slow pvp = boring pvp, but I'll obviously reserve judgement till it is released. I just really don't want to be dissappointed by this game after the load of lackluster mmo's i've tried in the last couple of years. I know people hate comparisons with WoW but it really is the fluidity of the movement and combat, the feeling of it being "real time", that keeps me going back.

They had the exact same kind of videos of WoW before it released. I remember being so dissapointed by the battles and animations after having watched a clip of a couple of orcs fighting some humans. They just stood there, trading blows, and it looked awful.

Of course that all changed when I actually tried the pvp in the game. I am hoping the same will happen with WAR.

The black one was back in stock shortly after the new year.

On the subject of the Game Vid: Paul says specifically that it NOT an RVR video. If you watch the podcast, they say that people were TOLD specifically to just stand there and fight.
So.. take it as it is. If you want to see some real RVR vids, hit up Gametrailers.com.
This is NOT an RVR video.. it's a demonstration.

He says "this isn't an RvR video, it's 1 minute of glory" (or something like that).

Whether or not it's actual RvR, it's still pretty damned boring-looking. Certainly not glorious.

Oddly enough, it looks almost exactly like the WoW beta "pvp" videos, the age of conan videos (if you can call anything that game puts together interesting), etc.

I think it actually looks quite cool. Lots of characters on the screen, smacking eachother around. It reminded me a lot of DAoC, which is very good.

Hopefully they will release a longer version in the near future.

He probably refers to it as "glorious" because he knows everything that went into making it happen, and everything that is going on in the background.
As near complete outsiders, we have no idea what's going on. We're missing the context for what's happening.

I imagine the presentation Hickman gave in Germany was fantastic, as it sounds like he gave a play-by-play of what was going on. But we'll never see that :( .

Well for example in WoW battlegrounds you can get destroyed in like 3 seconds, when i played(keep in mind this was a 5v5 with no one who knew what they were doing and i was a tank class) I only died like once and i was getting hit for like a minute by a couple of people

edit: it is definately not like eve pvp where you hit f1-f7 and just sit back, its still quite intense, also i got number one in that skirmish

Just watched the video, Paul even states specifically - "...If this was a RvR video you would see people slinging a lot more spells and jumping around like lunatics".

That last part is pretty important, as it implies a fast paced, free flow to combat; There's no reason to be worried about slow PvP just yet.

it's slower in the fact that the emphasis is on skill, rather than cooldowns/trinkets, thus resulting in longer fights.
