Yea that slow social stuff is a big part of the game and specifically part of what makes them so enjoyable to people and review well.
Not for everyone of course! But also really surprising to see someone hear about the game enough to buy it it without knowing that..
And yea my run of the base game was 140 hours. Listening to all dialogue never skipping through and doing everything possible to do before the end boss. And I was still sad to see it end!
Started playing infamous second son, never played rhe first one but man the mocap and acting is really great in this. I’m really enjoying the start and the cutscenes
It's a shame the older games aren't playable on anything but PS3. Infamous 2 is basically the peak of the series, at least from a gameplay perspective. It obviously can't compete visually with Second Son or First Light though.
First light with HDR would be amazing. All that neon !
The beginning of Persona games are always super rough. You know that combat tutorial you had at the start, where you fought those guys in the casino and then broke out?
You don't get your first combat in Persona 4 until about 1.5-2 hours in. It's just dialogue and cutscenes.

the only thing i didn't like about p5 was the main overarching plot..which sounds bad when i say it but what i mean is (light overall story spoilers you get in the first few hours of play)
the whole phantom thieves of hearts; assholes tendencies etc. just felt so lowkey and unimportant vs p4 where you were stopping random supernatural murders; P3 shadow creatures that feed on peoples minds etc.
that being said i still really liked the gameplay and individual character interactions
None of the main characters were remotely interesting to me and by the time I got to the second dungeon I was wishing that a giant meteor would plummet down and kill them all. That was when I knew it was time to stop playing.
Also, the combat music was insanely annoying. Worst song choice ever and it plays NON STOP.
My persona problem has always been "what should I do today" and combined with me wanting to do well would lead to decision paralysis or guide following for every single daily activity and p5 finally broke me of that by both having online features telling me what most people did that day and also being way more lenient on what you can do and still get things maxed out
Also, the combat music was insanely annoying. Worst song choice ever and it plays NON STOP.
Finally, we've cracked it!
The most wrong opinion on the forums! It's been found!
Honestly my opinion if I expounded on it would likely be considered wronger, but there’s no point in getting into why I disliked persona 5 so much, it’s easier to just say it’s not for me and move on
P5 Royal at least adds another battle theme, which does help as I did eventually (like 80 hours in) get tired of Last Surprise. (In Royal, Take Over plays if you ambush an enemy, and you get Last Surprise if you don't ambush)
actually this video is a cool mix of all the battle themes from the main games and spinoffs of the series, starting all the way back with Revelations: Persona on the PS1 and going all the way to Persona 5 Scramble (the sequel to P5 (also a Warriors game) on PC/PS4/Switch)
fun fact, you get a ton of alternate costumes in P5 Royal as free and paid DLC, and the costumes from previous games and the various SMT games like If... and Devil Summoner play the battle and results themes from those games instead of the P5R music: https://personacentral.com/persona-5-royal-dlc-costumes/

Yeah, I loved P4 and P5, but I also get that these games aren't necessarily connect with a broad range of gamers the way more mainstream releases do, which is why I always add a bunch of qualifiers when I recommend it to people.
So I've never played a Persona game, but I finally started Persona 5 Royal
I am 2.5 hours into the tutorial? And have barely had any gameplay whatsoever? This was a really well reviewed game. what the fuck is going on
Yeah; Persona 4 had this problem and Persona 5 doesn't back off. The game absolutely opens up to the point where management of your time is all on you and the on-rails nature is pretty much gone, but the intro I can see being rough for folks.
. . .speaking of, has the translation changed at all. I was actually wanting to get Royal (not at the price tag they had and with no discount for verified owners of the base version) just didn't want to sit through what I consider a REALLY bad translation. P4 was fantastic as the script felt tailored to a Western audience but definitely had Japanese roots, but P5 has the same problem that Yakuza: Judgement and Like A Dragon have: they go way too hard on maintaining the original Japanese such that the translation sound awkward and out of place in English.
Having said that. . .legit surprised that people don't like the battle music from P5. I think it's just as fun and jazzy as the last two themes - none of which particularly scream "A battle is taking place for life and death is taking place. . ." instead suggesting we're just having a rollicking good time (that is until "You'll never see it coming!" kicks in).
P4 was fantastic as the script felt tailored to a Western audience but definitely had Japanese roots, but P5 has the same problem that Yakuza: Judgement and Like A Dragon have: they go way too hard on maintaining the original Japanese such that the translation sound awkward and out of place in English.
Can you give an example (from any of those games)?
ETA: I'm asking because at least from Yakuza 6 on, RGG's localizations have played really fast and loose with the original language. The final script is written by two people with no knowledge of the original Japanese (and don't even speak it, iirc).
The translation in Royal is the same. Personally I thought it was darn good and not awkward, then again I appreciated the game's exploration of daily life in Tokyo. Edit: I think it may be that P5 feels more Japanese than P4, since P4 is in a small, isolated town with a central hub (Junes) that doesn't feel Japanese at all, while P5 runs you into loads and loads and loads of Japanese culture.
For others reading that may be on the fence, keep in mind that you'll spend maybe 40% of the game in dungeons, and that's if you really hit the optional dungeon. If the setting/characters/plot doesn't grab you, it's probably best to bail.

An issue that plagues all of these games is localization's insistence on using Japanese honorifics in an English translation. Hearing -san's and -chan's thrown all over the place gets grating after awhile and is not how you would expect localization to go in reverse or for any other language translations elsewhere. It's like using a club to constantly remind you that, yes, this game takes place in Japan and yes these characters are Japanese (which again is something translations/localizations elsewhere - German to English for example in DARK - don't do). There's also the tendency of these games (P5 is horrendous with it) to try to translate the Japanese explicitly, so you've got phrases like "In other words. . ." peppered all throughout your English script instead of seeing whether or not a more natural translation. As for specific examples:
Persona 5 (this is a spectacular spoiler for anyone who hasn't played this game):
When Goro is laying out his motivations he talks about Shido and one line he is "Remember I said before, how my mother had been in a relationship with some good for nothing guy. . ." No one would describe a parents relationship with a deadbeat dad like this in English. It is so clunky and it's this level of clunkiness that I bristle out (especially when it is surrounded by some actual good translations).
And the scripts in Judgement and Like A Dragon are straight up different depending on what subtitles you go for. The localization team for Judgement (or maybe the director) straight up said that their intention was to preserve the Japanese idiosyncrasies of the Japanese language, which makes no sense for me to do when you are trying to draft a script that speaks naturally to a foreign audience.
This site has a pretty good overview of my take on P5 (and other titles like it that I think get localization wrong).
There are definitely script changes between P5 and P5 Royal. Off the top of my head, they made Morgana less demanding of you early on, as you don't have to go to bed so much. Also they rewrote the worst scene in the game, the bit where (minor main story spoilers, CW: sexual harassments/abuse)
the two awful gay stereotypes basically kidnap Ryuji off the street. Now, it's meant as more of a makeover instead of implying, uh, sexual assault, but it still fucking sucks ass because the two gay characters are still awful stereotypes and your character still does literally nothing to stop it.
I love Persona 3s battle music the most. There was something about it that always kept me going. I think it's the brass instruments and the rap lyrics.

I've liked them all but P3 was definitely a banger.
One of the best parts of P5 Strikers was that you could have the battle music shuffle through all the different battle themes of the past. And you could even mark which ones you wanted to part of the shuffle or not if there were some you didn't like.
I jumped back into Spiderman because I want to pick up miles, and found out I was only like 5 missions away from beating the main story. God that game is fun I had forgotten. Gonna run through the dlcs while I'm in the mood. It looked good before, I don't know the specs, bit it's definitely noticeably faster at loading on PS5 even if there's no specific upgrade. The fast travel screens only last like 2-4s now barely time to appreciate the comedy of them

Finished Control on PS5. The base game had some shitty boss fights but both Foundation and AWE were great. Overall fabulous game and lived up to the expectations I had going in.
Started Ratchet and Clank PS5 and this game is just gorgeous. Not to mention the lack of load screens is well appreciated. It’s so good at points I am not sure if it isn’t an animated movie the quality is that good. Easy platinum as well (control is also an easy platinum).

Yeah, Remedy is... not great at making boss battles. Nothing in Control is as absurdly egregious as the final boss of Quantum Break, thankfully, and esseJ is the closest they've come to making an actually good boss battle.
But dat lore is Control's greatest present to me. I could read bureaucratic memos about cryptids and supernatural phenomena all goddamn day.
Really? I loved the black cat dlc? What’s tedious and unfun about it? I also loved the opening in the art gallery
It's just magia brutes with miniguns in every mission with just too many waves. I finally got to do a cool predator mission team up with black cat and they immediately threw me into a 4 wave forced combat with two minigunners and a bunch of rockets and I keep having to pause the game just to throw my hands up in rage.
I've been dodging the minigunners for 20 minutes to get health back. (Includes time I've been paused to just hold my head in my hands).
I definitely beat it by swapping to the EMP power mid fight then dodging in a spot I couldn't be hit until I got 2 focus bars to use a takedown on one of them.
Fired up Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order on my PS4 Pro. If you're going to make a game where you're expected to die 47,000 times, make the reload times after each death less than (literally) 40 seconds.
Back on topic, I've got a newfound appreciation for this new gen's main improvement.

Same experience for me in Control. The load times really hold the game back, especially when it's complete crapshoot if an infinite pit will just respawn you on a ledge or be instant death. I found myself ceasing to experiment and just using the throw, pierce and the grip for 90% of the game. Was a good game though and an easy platinum at least.
I saw a good deal on Returnal today ($70AUD on Amazon) and nearly pulled the trigger, until I remembered the lack of save option. I don't usually have 3 hours to play in a stretch, and I don't want to leave my PS5 in rest mode all the time.
Hades runs are like 40 minutes and I don't even always get through one of those in one go!

I actually just started CONTROL myself on the PS5 (I'm hoping that boss spoiler earlier isn't that big of a spoiler) and was legit shocked that the PS5 edition had such a long load time on the fast travel. I haven't had to reload but it sounds like that will also be an issue (I also didn't see any difficulty settings so maybe that will mitigate 'death-respawning' to a degree).

Is it a battle song? Hell no.
It is important to match the song to the mood. For instance, anytime I roll a Nord in Skyrim, this is their primary soundtrack:
