Target leaks show US pricing at $600 for the regular and $900 for the pro. They've got to be heavily subsidizing these phones, right?

Got to be. That's way below what the forecasts were over the summer. All the experts looking at those specs expected more like $900-$1100

Yeah. Just waiting to make sure the compatibility is all there, which it should be, and I'll probably jump in.

if $600 USD for the Pixel 6 is true, that makes it cheaper than the Pixel 5 was/is. So yeah, Google would be subsidizing that.

This will probably be a pretty unpopular opinion 'round these parts, but I think the Pixel Launcher UI on the Pixel 6 is pretty ugly.

The rest of the phone looks pretty solid. Really interested to see if the cameras do live up to what they promise.

I'm going to be trying to get a Pixel 6 but I have to wait a month until all my bills are paid up. Hopefully it's still in stock then because I know last time they did a drop, got the 4A no problem but it was sold out for a while after that

I'd specifically like the Pro but I'll take what I can get

Are any US carriers offering this?

EDIT: It seems I didn't scroll down far enough on T-Mobile's site to see it.

Android 12 is being pushed to Pixels right now. Not sure I like the new font but I do like having more useful options in the notification shade and the mic/camera access indicators. Now to figure out what is accessing my microphone currently. Maybe it's just "Ok Google". Let's see if we can't fix that.

Wow. At least on the official Google Store it was a real shitstorm of a launch. Check out errored out for two hours. Got one Pro order thru, only for Google to mysteriously cancel it 20 minutes later because they "could not validate some of my information".

At that point I couldn't get a Pro any more, but they let me checkout with a 6 non-Pro, which as far as I can tell was accepted (with confirmation e-mail).

So I guess, google is vetting people. And I think I've just been told that I'm no Pro.

AT&T is still taking preorders. Still thinking about it because trading in my 4XL would pay for almost the entire thing. But I also don't think I can afford the payoff for my phone just now.

I know phone stock is low because the panorama but it's annoying how few unlocked versions there were. I was at work when they dropped and no dice. I'll just play the waiting game I guess.

Don't think so. It used to be in Wallpaper & Styles I believe. It's not there or in Display settings.

Also I just discovered that they took out Conversation Bubbles? WHY? Why do you do these things Google? That was the best feature!

edit: FALSE ALARM Bubbles are still in. I just couldn't figure out how to get them to show up even though I didn't change anything.

Has anyone figured out a neat wallpaper/ theme for Android 12 yet? I have messed with it a little, themed app icons look goofy so far, but that feature is only in beta I guess.

I love them. I primarily use both SMS and Facebook Messenger so having everything show up in the same place is great. No need to switch apps if I'm doing something else on my phone.

You don't need to anyway. Drag from the top and you can reply from the notification shade.

I think it shows the last few messages. I don't do a lot of texting or communicating at all though, so...

So they decided to 'improve' the hardware by adding an actual camera setup. Which basically is the same standard bump you see on most smartphones. However, not only is these cameras shockingly poor for a £1000 + device, the creation of the bump has defeated one of the best features of the original version ensuring if you fold this device around it creates a wedge gap and is so difficult to handle and use.

Despite promising improvements last gen with the software this model has still the same UI issues the original had only now compounded more because the new spec bump chipset can't handle running in a small enclosure causing constant overheating to the point that of the device cutting dead. So basically has the same software issues of the first but now will overheat and crash more often.

Finally for the cherry ontop of this shitshow the screens have 'improved' by curving over the edges like galaxy phones of 3 years ago. However, they decided to curve the edges to the centre of the fold and forgot to adjust the uI registering it as a non visible aspect of the image. So want to read an email Web article or play a game ? Good luck having the centre text and icons of the screen now not visible at all.

  • MichaelLCMichaelLC In what furnace was thy brain? ChicagoRegistered User regular
So clearly the engineering solution is the make the camera bump much bigger to allow more air flow to the closed device.

If the Pixel 3 is the perfect size for me, and the Pixel (1) XL was too wide, should I even bother considering the Pixel 6 Pro despite the better specs than the 6?

here's what the two phones look like (Pixel 3 vs 6 pro) as a size comparison: https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Google-Pixel-3,Google-Pixel-6-Pro/phones/10932,11733

The Pixel 6 is wider than the original Pixel XL was, this is just the size that phones are now. If you want a small phone you're not getting a pixel.

Also, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are almost the same size. Size comparison here: https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Google-Pixel-6,Google-Pixel-6-Pro/phones/11732,11733

They're basically the same width, with the 6 Pro just a sliver taller. I think it comes to price more than size considering how close they are.

Ugh. Small hands man loses again.

I didn't realize the two Pixel 6 SKUs were so close in size. I'll have to reconsider!

Also I'm starting to see a smattering of cases that absorb the camera bump but nothing that makes me completely happy

The pixel 3a is just about the right size for me, maybe a little too big

Why are all of the small Android phones either dead in the water discontinued or garbage

Why are all of the small Android phones either dead in the water discontinued or garbage

Lots of reasons, most of which are related to "smaller phones don't sell"

There are a lot of reasons that smaller phones don't sell, but they don't sell, and that's why. Smaller phones have smaller batteries so they die faster (see: iPhone 12/13 Mini). Smaller phones with high end components don't have as much room to dissipate heat, so they can run hotter and have worse thermal performance. Heck, I notice that even my Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs hot because since it folds in half, the CPU is on one side of the device and there's less room in half the phone for thermal management than there is on a standard phone. Smaller phones also have less room for good cameras, which is a thing that most people have decided is important. So small phones either have cameras that are less good, or have to sacrifice elsewhere because of physical space constraints.

And people also like larger screens.

In constantly waffling between I should cut way down on phone time, a cheap piece of garbage phone could help with that

And ooo shiny, let's see if we can get pixel 5a or maybe switch to iPhones and get a mini

My new 5a is the same size as the 3XL I had previously so I don't know if that'll be true any longer.

I was looking forward to a smaller phone too.

I never thought I would care that much until I got a phone that actually took great pictures (Pixel 3) and compared them to a competitor (my wife's iPhone 8) that took inferior photos.

it's a tired, but true statement, the best camera is the one that's with you. I haven't bought a "real" camera since 2011, and 95% of the time I don't miss it. Maybe when I go on a "once in a lifetime" style trip I might invest in a proper camera again. But day to day, I don't need it.

We're at a point where honestly even a $300 camera will take pretty good pictures in daylight. But the flagships do better in low/challenging light and less static issues. The Final frontier really is moving objects in less than perfect light, and no phone is there yet. But it'll get there.

The green is a really nice dark green, but honestly you can buy a dark green case for your phone and bam, your black phone is now green.

I wish my Dad was still around. He'd love this phone and could finally say that the future is almost here. All we would need is a phone shoe.

Speaking of cameras on phones, Sony has shown off the new Xperia Pro I (pronounced PRO EYE, yeah Sony, never change with those crazy names). Basically a phone designed for photographers and videographers, but forgetting most people want computational imaging to get great shots.

Sony got out of selling phones to the masses a while back. their phones now are pretty much exclusively targeted at specific content creation use cases, and they excel at that.

The Xperia Pro last year was literally designed to be something that you can use as a 5G livestreaming monitor when hooked up to a real TV camera. I know some networks bought a number of them to use for sports broadcasts for mobile camera setups. thats what sony is marketing their phones as now.

I don't really do social media, and I am too ugly for selfies, so a phone's camera could be a miniaturized electronic potato and it wouldn't really impact me.
