Noted internet twitterer and comics bear Gail Simone is having folks point out the spooky movie stuff that still gives them the creeps even long after they first saw it. Tons of weird old monsters and effects to comb through, lotta classics and a few that even make me double take in the thread:

Show ONE image from a horror movie that scared the hell out of you as a kid.

Someone had mentioned it in another thread, but I didn't realize it was a new video on YouTube. The idea of the backrooms has been around for a while (was it originally an SCP?) but this is the best variation I've seen on it yet!

It wasn't originally an SCP, just a photo that got posted on 4chan and then had some creepypasta written based on it.

It has since developed a whole SCP style extended universe with its own internal lore and characters and canon.
    http://backrooms-wiki.wikidot.com/

That video is dope, and I absolutely adore the technique of building digital 3D environments and then filming them as if with a handheld camera. The VHS style really makes it feel real.

According to the linked instagram account on the youtube channel, the creator of that Backrooms video is only 16 years old.

So those kids at the beginning making the amateurish VHS movie are probably just his friends, not hired actors or whatever.

The precocious talent and advanced software involved here is making me feel very old, even more than VHS home movies being used as a framing device by a creative younger than the Blu-ray Disc specification.

    We'll get back there someday.

Isn't that just the "backstage" from Neil Gaiman?

Yes that showed up in my feed as well! According to the comments the creator is 16 which is impressive if true. Since watching it a few more videos of theirs have popped up, seems like they're adding some more story to it about government experiments etc. I'm going to be keeping an eye out

Yeah those backrooms videos came out of nowhere on my YouTube feed, but clearly the fiction has been building for awhile. Hearing nothing about them and then suddenly having a whole mythos emerge like that only adds to what they're doing for me.

The video is so well done I couldn't tell if elements of it were actually real or not until it became impossible for it to be an actual, physical space.

The original post on 4chan happened in 2019 and it's been building since then.

Reading the wiki is kind of wild because it feels like the muppet babies version of the SCP. A discovery log in the SCP is like
The subject was originally retrieved by Mobile Task Force Σ14 (Log Jammers) after several residents reported sightings to the local sherrif ███ █████, who escalated to his local FBI outpost at
█████, MI at which point embedded foundation agents flagged the event.

And a discovery log in the Backrooms is like
A bunch of people saw it on level 7.

Part of the interesting thing about the backrooms stuff is a lot of it has to do with like, people's recollection of being in weird liminal spaces as a child, like really long hallways or a store with a bunch of empty shelves and how odd and alien these spaces can seem. it's all very interesting.

I have tons of memories like that.

A strange discount toys superstore, from the era where store shelves were always packed to bursting. But despite the full shelves, this specific store was failing. We were the only customers in the whole store. Half the fluorescent lighting was out (to save electricity?) leaving the furthest reaches of the store in total darkness, creating the illusion that the already huge warehouse-style store stretched further past that darkness, perhaps to infinity...

    We'll get back there someday.

My mom used to do the day to day running of the school lunch program for part of the school district. If a school was understaffed she'd run over there at night to make food for the next day. So my childhood involved a lot of visiting new spaces and seeing the back hallways of buildings. Including the office building where the district kitchen/food storage was located, where some of the meal items were prepped en-mass, and had wide, usually empty corridors.

My mother did a lot of organizing, fundraising, etc so I had a similar experience getting to see the business side of schools, function halls, kitchens, and various other facilities.

The Backrooms are effectively recreating dreams I would frequently have of navigating these spaces from my small, child perspective (tall ceilings, cavernous spaces, etc) with something sinister I had to avoid. Something I could hear but usually never see because it was around a corner or down a hall.

Since I moved houses recently I decided to look up a haunted location I had heard of before to find out if I'm closer to it. I am not, but in researching the haunted bridge I learned that the real Spooky was racism the whole time.

Dunno whether to call it the "Candyman" storyline or the "Goatman" storyline. I feel like the real legend should take precedent, but naming a trope after a real legend seems off.

According to the twitter bio of the guy who posted these, he "Was not stuck in a hotel" and "wrote the story for fun". I don't mind, though. It elicited a genuine anxiety response in me. Especially photos of the dark hallways and the single stack of chairs.

Calling that a liminal space feels...inaccurate to me.

Now, calling the Seattle Underground a liminal space? I can get behind that.

I totally believe that was real. I've seen some incredibly strange and spooky places in the back of convention centers that shouldn't exist is the space we occupy.

Technically it'd have to be between spaces to qualify. Which is why the "backrooms" idea is pretty definitionally "liminal" because it's a space made up of modern in-between spaces.

A monument made of of alleys and walkways disconnected from destination spaces. The Liminal Space Needle is the space around the location that are not themselves locations.

To dedicate it, you'd just spread a rumor that there's a plaque commemorating Italo Calvino somewhere in the area.

my grandma used to live in a big ol' rambly house and there was one terrible hallway with a mirror at the far end, always dark and creepy.

one time my dad woke me up in front of the hallway mirror. I had been screaming and pounding on it, still asleep.

I am lucky it was made of some sturdy glass and I didn't break it. both because it would have cut me up a good one, but also what if whatever I was screaming at came out.

my grandpa took the mirror down at my insistence.

edit: for context, I used to sleepwalk a lot when I was little. I was constantly waking up in different parts of my house in the middle of the night.

William was sleep-walking the other night, kept looking at the floor and saying "it's the things....the little things" and as I tried to escort him back to his room he was making sort of darting motions while feverishly scanning the floor.

Do you ever wonder if you were actually trapped on the 'other' side of the mirror trying to get out?

You can tell us if you thought that. It's silly. You're definitely still on the right side of the mirror, even today.

No need to worry about that.
