I wonder if the tips were only for solo play? When I did it the mission control guy basically told me to grab the canister on the back and use it to get oil.

Sure, but that's not mentioned until the driller runs out of fuel. Before that, any shale that gets mined just sits on the ground....taunting you. Mocking you.

lol yeah I started mining 1 vein at the start and the moment they didn't 'suck up' and show as how much I had, I just assumed it was a new environmental thing. Then the drill ran out of juice haha.

We tried one new mission. Man I've gotten bad at this game haha. We found one of the random data hub things and it took us 10 minutes to figure it out. We tried digging under the machine, bringing half a dozen of the orbs over encircling it. Turns out you need to do a pipeline like thing with the nodes from the drop pod to the machine.

It looks like you need to get your class to 25 to unlock the mission to unlock the new guns.

Time to get back on the engineer grind. Hopefully along the way I get some engineer overclocks.

Hazard level, mostly. I find hazard 3 to be comfortable.

Hazard level you get to pick, and influences how tough the bug spawns are. Length/Complexity are, to my knowledge, randomized on whatever timer cycles missions in and out. Length influences how much objective you need to do (amount of stuff gathered, refuel stops on escorts), complexity I assume influences how crazy map generation can get.

Highest Complexity can transform what was a relaxing day into a vertical nightmare.

    But yeah my mental model:
    2 autorun to complete quests.
    3 fun time
4 you want to be playing well
5 death unless you play near perfect

Novac_C and Neophyte pretty much summed up the basics in that hazard level sums up how many bugs/how strong that they'll be, length indicates the scope of the objective and size of the cave, while complexity influences how crazy the cave can become.

Another factor to consider is the zone that the map takes place in and whether or not the map has any special modifiers applied. For example low oxygen, regenerative bugs, or haunted caves. I just don't go to haunted caves. Whether or not the environment is good or not is a subjective thing. A lot of people hate magma core since it is probably one of the more hazardous zones for your health. I hate dense biozone since it tends to create large caverns with many multi-tiered ledges with inverted inclines all over the place. It's very unpleasant for some dwarves to traverse.

Having a good build for bosco helps a lot too. My preferred build for bosco is 31133. Or in other words faster mining, where I have bosco do my mining (doesn't benefit from pots of gold), extra illumination to help illuminate high ceilings in huge caverns, cryo rockets that are almost exclusively used for double-tap freezing those naedocyte breeders to death, and electro bullets since I don't expect bosco to output serious DPS but the electification CC can be useful at times.

Another tip for solo play is that IMO I get huge value out of the "deep pockets" perk. Mainly on missions like point extraction where I don't have molly with me. On those missions things can be a bit dicey until you amass enough nitra for a resupply. With the stock 40 capacity, you can find yourself in a situation where bosco mined a hard to reach nitra vein but you get stuck maxed out at 38-39 nitra since you don't have enough free space in your inventory to pick up one of the nitra chunks on the ground. This means that that even if you find nitra on your outings from the mining rig, it might take you three trips to amass enough for a resupply. The big tip for solo point extract is to work your way from the outside-in. Basically ignore all of the aquarqs that are near the mining rig. Delve deep into one of the wings of the cavern in the early game while the enemy spawns are still weak. Hopefully each trip nets you at least one aquarq and a pocket full of nitra. Then you can say safe near the mining rig havining bosco fetch the nearby aquarqs in the later stages of the game when the bugs are present in greater numbers.

Another thing is that you can farm some resources via lootbugs. They're attracted to stray mineral chunks lying on the ground and will eat them. If you were to for example leave a pile of loose gold unattended on the ground near the mining rig, then later in the mission you may find a large concentration of lootbugs hanging out near the rig that can be harvested for a hefty sum of nitra. I know some people dislike killing lootbugs, but it's an option if you need more nitra and are unsure if you'll find enough in the caves during your run.

I forgot the player sets the hazard difficulty. That makes this a lot easier. I almost have all the new guns unlocked, looking forward to trying them all out.

I almost always run deep pockets 3 even with other people, it is a really nice perk. I also run thorns, born ready, heightened senses, and beast master. Gotta get my Steve going.

I've only recently started playing around with beastmaster. It is a nice bit of aggro management so long as you're not running as a driller (and maybe a gunner) with tons of AOE. The talent that I'm addicted to running is hover boots just because it's so convenient to have an option to traverse long drops by simply leaping and popping the hover boots at the bottom. It's redundant on some dwarves, but I know that if I stopped running it then I'd leap and I'd immediately jump off a cliff while forgetting that I didn't bring it.

decided to pick this up since it was on sale..
failed the second tutorial mission after like half an hour because... i made the tragic mistake of changing to the Driller after the first mission and when it was time to go back to the drop pod... I couldn't go UP and was stuck at the bottom of a cliff til the timer ran out ;P

it's pretty fun so far, good voice acting.

The Scout is the easiest class to start with solo since he can grapple anywhere. Helps with many of the mission types as well. I'd also focus on getting the "steve" perk quickly. Having a bug buddy is awesome.

Once you are more used to the game and have more time to get back to the pod, the driller can work since you can usually drill above the pod and drop down, but it can take a decent amount of time.

Straight up is an issue for driller, but usually people kind of drill up at a steep angle until they reach the top. A lot of drillers ignore molly entirely, look at the drop pod's icon on the interface, and just drill straight through 100+ meters of solid rock to head directly to the drop pod. Although that's after leveling driller up a bit and unlocking extra fuel capacity for the drills.

A tip for obnoxious cliffs like that. If you ever encounter a really obnoxiously vertical segment that you're afraid that Molly is just going to climb straight up, then take a few minutes to climb the stupid cliff before calling the drop pod. Then you won't have to climb the cliff while on a timer and fighting off bugs. The drop pod may even land on the bottom side of the cliff, and going down is easier than going up.

Funnily enough, I find the gunner the easiest to play solo with. The Scout's grapple is great for traversal, but some resources are on ceilings/flat walls and Bosco won't retrieve some things. I mean, they can be skipped, nothing mission critical, but I definitely like to get everything I see, haha.

Also, when there is a horde of enemies, the gunner is a little better equipped for it.

But it will mostly depend on playstyle. The gunner is the most fun for me, then driller and engineer and scout is probably my least favourite. All four are still fun, though!

But for solo, I'm generally the gunner.

In my case, I only like to play with my friends or solo. Even back when I played MMOs, I didn't like playing with randos. DRG is one of the most friendly multiplayer oriented games to that playstyle I've ever seen. Bosco should be the gold standard for AI driven teammates.

I've been playing with just random folks and honestly have had exclusively positive experiences so far. Which is wild, I would 100% expect to have had some sort of annoying team-killing or something by this point but everyone just seems to silently focus on doing the mission for the most part.

Scout can be built to get himself pretty much everywhere. Between the grapple, hoverboots, the special powder overclock for the shotgun, hoverclock for the m100, and gitting-gud at at grabbing ledges/making ledges with power attacks, not much can stop him and he laughs at gravity. The kicker is that he can't bring anything with him, so situations where you need to carry something are obnoxious.

I like playing gunner on solo point extract/escort/industrial sabotage missions. The former because the zipline works great for transporting aquarqs/quickly moving a fuel canister into position to mine shale, while the later is because the new hurricane rocket launcher with napalm rounds is pretty great against the robots.

I like engineer for solo salvage op and elimination missions, the former because he can turtle up really well with the turrets and the later because I'm fond of the breach cutter with the return to sender overclock against dreads.

For the rest of the missions, I tend to play driller/engineer depending on how I'm feeling. Although I've been playing gunner more often since the new rocket launcher is clicking with me more than the minigun/autocannon ever did.

I used to play just exclusively engineer (and it's my go to deep dive class because I have a very good generalist loadout with overclocks).

But I've been playing some gunner and it's great fun. Working on grinding out a loadout (need to unlock the second side arm) but it's very satisfying to turn everything to paste.

Yeah you can use any class for any mission. I agree, I like the gunner on Extract missions. The main reason I suggest the scout is just speed. The Zip gun is a starter weapon and when you start you're usually playing on 2-3 star difficulty. The Scout can complete missions much faster since they can traverse much faster. Once you've got some time in and have upgraded some of the other classes guns, then play what you'd like.

In general moving fast is always good. Gold ore is a trap especially on higher difficulty. Stay together and focus on high threat targets ( breeder / nexus / spitball ).

As far as engineer I recommend getting in the habit of shooting out ledges preemptively for the scout, recalling your placed gun before rebuilding, and remembering to reload it during long fights.

The overclock that reduces the minigun spin up time has made it impossible for me to use any other weapon. With the spinup reduction in the minigun's unlocks, it's down to 0.1 seconds, which is basically, no spinup time. I can't get the autocannon or rocket launcher to be as effective (Though I've tried, because AoE is super useful in deep dives, but I'm always better with the minigun). A nice feature is the minigun can shoot out the beamers during the heartstone extraction for a lot less ammo commitment than the explosive weapons. It's at the point where I feel handicapped doing the escort mission with any other class or setup.

I want to love the rocket launcher but the travel time combined with misses due enemies occluding my sight lines makes it just feel bad too me.

I also run 0.1 spin up on the mini gun and it just makes the weapon great at longer ranges and has spoiled me

  • General_ArmchairGeneral_Armchair Registered User regular
I ended up retiring the rocket launcher too. I found the neurotoxin overclock for the autocannon and that became my new favorite when combined with the fear modification. It provides a pretty intense amount of crowd control since the fear effect persists until the enemy has flex X meters (I don't recall the value for X), and the neurotoxin effect slows the bug which results in them wasting more time running away. For single target DPS I swapped over to using the burst pistol with compact magazines and the burst stun effect.

For the the industrial sabotage missions, I started running Engineer ever since I realized that the mini-nuke can nuke multiple weak points on the pyramid simultaneously. All 4 at once if you manage to get to a vantage point above the pyramid and nuke the top.

Gets it out of the way and good sight lines. The Breach Cutter was massively OP (not sure if it still is). Don't know exact upgrades I used, but triple line for sure. If you can hit larger enemies with all 3 lines, it just melts them at lower difficulties. Proximity Mine was my go to throwable, really versatile for covering blind spots.

I just want to point out really quick that triple lines does not equal triple damage. Personally I think that triple beam is the weakest choice of the bunch. The way that the system works, the game just checks to see if they're being touched by a line and then applies damage at a constant rate. An enemy being touched by two or three lines is damaged at the same rate as a single line. The one caveat is that more lines might equate to one of them touching weakspot, which will inflict boosted damage so long as the weakspot is being hit.

If you want to melt big targets, the way to go is to use Explosive Goodbye instead of triple line and pair it with the Return to Sender overclock. Basically send the beam through the enemy once, then double the damage by having the beam reverse back through the target, and finally put the cherry on top by detonating the beam within the target. It definitely takes more concentration though to micromanage the beam like that compared to other builds that are fire and forget once you have pulled the trigger, but it's very effective if you land the hit right. It's one of my favored way to deal with boss fights though since I can have the beam loiter and detonate on their weak points from any position around the dread.

Interesting, things melted so quickly even on 3/4 star difficulty, I didn't realize the triple line wasn't 3x damage. I always had trouble getting Return to Sender to work when things are frantic. I went with the more ammo since it tends to be limited and does so much damage.
