Freddie Mercury past away November 24th 1991, just 45-years-old. It's been a generation, but it doesn't feel like it.

The Theme to Flash Gordon is probably my favorite Queen song, what's yours?

I have never been to any Disney theme park and that video just made it even more likely I will never go.

Like, unless someone pays for it all for me, then I'd go. But paying for it and dealing with all those people? No thank you.

Best way of doing it is to either do a small amount of prep work or go with someone who has done some research themselves and can kinda shepherd you around. There's a lot of really cool stuff in a park like Disney or Universal, it's just that there's a lot of it, it's expensive, and there are other people there who are varying levels of stressed the fuck out. It's one of those things you have to set your expectations for ahead of time, or maybe set some goals for. I'd love to go back at some point, because a lot of that prep work stuff is fun for me.

But shit, it can also very easily be a nightmare for a lot of reasons. I don't know how my parents managed to pull off a trip with four kids to Orlando without one of us mauling one of the other ones.

Weird how I consider Freddy Mercury to be this person who existed before I was born but we were actually alive at the same time for multiple years.

I think that rides are super cool and there's some interesting history there. I'm glad Universal has stepped their game up a lot recently, too, especially since Disney keeps stepping on rakes. I extremely want to go on the Velocicoaster

I live near many theme parks and I don't want to go to any of them because waiting in lines and crowds combined are my utter bane. Conventions are the sole exception, because I can just cruise the shops and Artist Alley if there is one. Thankfully I only have to go to theme parks when my family gets in their head that we really need to waste an entire day standing in lines to see the fucking goddamn Minions ride.

The best way to go to a theme park is to live near and have an annual pass so you can just ignore rides with wait times over half an hour, or go by yourself and do single rider.

I went to Disney World in 2015 with few real expectations (no real loyalty to Disney or its parks, not an American so the DW fanboy culture is almost non-existent) and had a really good time, likely helped by being with people who knew the system! Sure, loads of people around, but the place is huge and there's plenty of places you can dip into to just chill and recover some crowd spoons when needed. They were also showing Captain EO at Epcot, which *chef kiss* saw that wheel of cheese more than once.

But I will say that, if eliminating all skip-the-line organisation results in ~40 minute average ride waits, sign me the fuck up, that's way lower than almost any non-FP ride we took that entire week.

I disagree with a lot of conclusions in that Defunctland video, but it's still pretty entertaining and doesn't fall into the standard youtuber trap of "increased production values = dumb, unrelated skits"

I'm curious what specific conclusions you disagree with. Not that I have a stake in it, I'm just curious how the thesis holds up to criticism.

Well, there's at one point when he brings up the shoes and if you charge 200 dollars for person X who really wants the shoes and 30 dollars for person Y, this only passes muster if person X is unaware of person Y. Companies tend to get around this by re-labeling products and services that are either essentially the same thing or literally the same thing.

Further, having more control over your situation often leads people to be happier. If they feel like they have chosen their fate they tend to be more satisfied than those who get it by happenstance.

Finally, he points out the disparity between people who do a lot of research and people who don't, saying there is more equity in the straight up lines than the newer fastpass system. He's not accounting into the fact that there is no option for the people at the park to pre-plan their day (and have control of it) outside of a fastpass type system.

One of his conclusions is that no fastpass system is better than the current system, and I don't think there is enough evidence presented to convince me of that.

The thing is that for a lot of people, especially the ones who didn't do extensive planning either because they didn't realize they needed to or because they didn't want to turn their vacation into work, FastPass+ didn't give them a feeling of control, especially given the way the system privileged certain users over others. When me and my wife went to WDW for our honeymoon 5 years ago, the way FastPass+ was structured made me feel less like we had control and more that we were up to the vagaries of an algorithm. In comparison, we just went back for our fifth anniversary, and I felt much more in control with the newer systems. One of Perjurer's points on FastPass+ was that for the people who felt the system gave them control to get that feeling, there needed to be a number of people who, to put it bluntly, got fucked over by that system. There's a point in the documentary where he says that if you had a positive experience with FastPass+, it's likely that you were on the far end of the ride histogram, and that in turn meant you knew how to exploit the system - and that came at the expense of people that didn't. The new systems take away the planning aspect and the feeling of control for planners - but in return people who don't want to plan aren't getting shut out.

another entry in the critically acclaimed "randomly came up in TST's youtube suggestions" series

    https://youtu.be/saM3afhPfO8

it's long, and there's a bit where she just straight up tells you to go watch her previous video on the first movie because she (understandably) doesn't want to go into it again, but it's a fun video essay and there's a point where both the series being discussed and the essay itself take an interesting and kind of unexpected turn
