Has American Netflix done an ongoing anime and actually released each episode weekly? In suddenly remembering when they got the rights to little witch academia and just sat on it until the show was over and they could put it all up at once

I guess it says right on the thing that it's premiering in December so that's presumably not happening

Netflix always waits until they have the full show dubbed and releases it all at once even though they air the episodes weekly in Japan. Netflix Jail is stupid and sucks.

I've grown to dislike the binge model release. A show becomes part of the public consciousness for like a week and then it's gone, and it discourages conversation because everyone goes through it at a different pace.

You can't actually watch it when you want because someone's going to spoil it immediately, and nobody's going to want to talk about it after two weeks when the next big thing drops. So it's gone from having to keep up on a weekly show and getting months of discussion to being almost forced to binge it and get your hot takes in immediately.

You know, there are various takes on the lawyer-friendly overseas names for things in Jojo, but I think that turning Jolyne’s Stand into “Stone Ocean” is the one example that really takes something away from the writing.

Granted, the writing was kinda working backwards from the name, but there was something to it. Jolene names the Stand herself; she likens the prison to a “stone ocean”, and she names the Stand “Stone Free”, as it’s what’s going to get her out of this situation, and win back her freedom. So like, calling the Stand “Stone Ocean” kinda takes away that whole symbolism she was going for.

Saw the first 2 episodes of Part 6 last night. The animation and art are as strong as ever with the David Production series.

And man, Part 6 really wastes no time in throwing our hero into the deep end WRT Stand stuff.
Like, Jolene is dealing with a murderous Stand that shrinks people in the second episode, and there's a strong implication that that Stand arrow fragment is gonna cause more havoc as the story moves along, since we're in a confined location where it could get stolen. It took characters like Jotaro or Josuke a few episodes before the really weird stuff started happening. And even in part 5, the shrinking Stand didn't show up for an arc or two.

I also really like Jolene's Stand power. Punch ghosts are very fun, and she still can do punch ghost things, but it's really neat to have a main character with a weird, long-range power that also does weird stuff to her physical form when it's active.

And yes, Kira Buckland is killing it as Jolene so far. I don't know all her stuff, but I am getting some of that 2B voice in her performance. A lot more emotive off the bat, of course.

Question for folks that haven't read the manga (episodes 3 & 4)
was it clear to you how manhattan transfer works? Or, sorry, downtown transfer I guess

Watching it, it didn't seem like they did a great job establishing the geography of the space, so it didn't really seem clear that he was shooting it through a window and then ricocheting the bullet off of it into the visitor's room. The way it works didn't seem very well communicated to me until near the end of episode 4.

It's been a few years since I've read stone ocean so I don't remember if this is a problem the anime is inheriting from the manga. Clear geography is not araki's strong suit so it wouldn't surprise me

I was sort of stand-offish when cg elements first started showing up but at least so far I think they're being used really well to make certain elements seem bizarre and otherworldly

I have technically read the manga, but it's been years and I don't remember this fight at all.
The bullet is shown ricocheting off the stand, but it makes no sense to me that it could arrive at the target only ricocheting once.

And then at the end of ep4 it seems like the whole fight was a dream, so maybe it doesn't have to make sense.

I have not yet watched beyond ep4 and have no memory of what happens next.

Made it through episode 5 of Stone Ocean.

Damn. This is getting really heavy.
Of course Jotaro would have to “die” almost straight away. He’s way too strong and knowledgeable for the story right now. Jolene as a main character needs the motivation and the struggle of losing him as an ally. But damn, what an exit. That was an extremely strong set of episodes to go through.

On the subject of Manhattan Transfer. Given that the entire sequence with him sniping them was a hallucination, I think that it doesn’t really need to make full sense how he managed it. In the real world, he was actually hiding as a guard in the women’s prison, and he only ever attacked them with a handgun in closer quarters. I’d say that his Stand really does work on sensing air currents and using them to map out flight patterns, like a supernatural sniper’s spotter. But since the insane hallway corridor snipe wasn’t real, I don’t think it needs an explanation.

How're we feeling about all the cgi in this season

Whole season so far, i guess, but no real plot details
I kinda didn't mind it in the Manhattan Transfer fight because it made the stand seem more weird and otherworldly

Jumpin Jack Flash had a lot of cg and it kinda stood out more but that fight involves a lot of shots of things and people rotating in ways that might be difficult to hand animate so like, I get it

But then past that there's lots of random shots where some elements are 3D for no apparent reason and it kind of sticks out awkwardly. It feels like a cost-cutting measure, or like the 3d models were supposed to be used as reference and they didn't have time/money to draw over them

Then again, I remember them saying a few years back that Steel Ball Run would be difficult to animate because of all the horses, and the only way they could realistically do it on their budget would be to use cg, but blending that with 2D animation fluidly is really difficult. Maybe this is them experimenting in order to get a handle on the techniques they'll need for SBR? As far as cgi in cartoons go I've definitely seen worse, and if they continue to improve at it I could see it getting pretty seamless.

Granted I don't watch that much anime in general these days, but I quite liked the look of the cgi elements, possibly partly because the show is also always doing stuff like playing with the colour palette and transitional wipes, etc, but none of the cgi felt out of place or particularly off putting to me.

    Particularly in the
Jumping Jack Flash fight, I was pretty impressed with how smooth some of the shots were, and it works well with the unnatural weightless movement in the scene.

I'm rewatching through it with the English dub now, which isn't bad, suffers a bit from some of that traditional unnatural dialog you get when trying to match lipflaps whilst also keeping to the gist of the Japanese script, but the VAs are all solid. I particularly like the vocal character it adds to some of the early villains, and when they do go off-script for localisation purposes it's generally for the better.

    With regards to dub/sub differences
Interestingly the English dub has Jotaro call out that he's able to bounce his shots off of his stand long before he's shown doing so, whilst they're still in the visitation room, which I don't remember seeing in the subtitled version, and Jolyne mentions that there are windows down the hallway, but they are not shown. Whereas the subbed version seems to have it as more of a mystery as to how he's making the shots at all until things move down to the maintenance room section.

    That's not it. It's more:
This is a thinking creature that has basically never meaningfully interacted with any other thinking creature, and which only acted to defend something it viewed as intrinsic part of itself. It did not act out of malice so much as considering humans a potentially existential threat to itself. Taught to socialize and to better understand itself and humans, it'd likely be no more a threat than any other superpowered human. Basically Jolyne is saying "it never had the chance to learn how to be a good person since it's barely used to being a person, so let's give it a chance."

Which is a surprisingly nuanced take for of all things 'dog-kickers-Jojo' to take but like, it's not wrong. It'd be like getting mad at like... a feral child for being a danger to others. Now I'm not sure if taking this Superpowered baby into a prison where they can totally kill a bunch of people is a great idea, but to be fair Jolyne kind of doesn't have a lot of options and needs all the help she can get to like, not die.
