Meanwhile, I ran into some fuckwits at the local cafe who were outraged over this intrusion, and being loudly angry at staff who were already way too busy. The staff were trying to be polite. Happily enough, the other patrons had no such constraints.

Ok so the cafes that I usually go to inside of our mall are actually asking for vaxpass, but only if you're doing sit down. You don't need to scan it for takeaway.

and I am seeing SO MANY MASKS. Like, easily 99% of folks over 7 or so have been properly masked and the 1% that weren't were either eating or had a mask on, but their nose was exposed. Which is easily more than what I saw this way at the mall last week at 3.2.

    Feeling pretty comfortable.

O course those fuckwits down at the Domain today are doing their best to ruin my mood.

I mean, the fuckwits at the domain today had their primary achievement be to cause several matches of children's cricket to be called off, due to being apparently unable to comprehend that the section of the domain they decided to gather on was actually booked. So, I'm even less impressed than previously.

I had to go out to the Hutt Valley last week at rush hour and got caught in a 10-minute tailback at the SH1/SH2 split at the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge during a protest and I was honestly depressed at how many beeps and honks of support the protesters got. I mean, sure, they're a bunch of covidiots, but I was really hoping for long periods of silence where there was clear indication that they were minority outliers, but instead there was a steady clear-minority-but-near-constant stream of support honks, and the only breaks they got were from the breaks in the traffic owing to the lights sequence.

It was disappointing and depressing to realise even that small level of support exists in the general public even here in Wellington, where half the fucking office workers in those cars are probably public servants no more than a degree of separation from actual people dealing directly with the pandemic.

At this point I assume anyone who isn't vaccinated has an axe to grind. It's been long enough that they're unlikely to just be lazy (and there are definitely lazy people out there). I was finding "90% vaccinated" hard to square with the amount of apparent non-vaxed that I know, but if you mentally shift it to "1 in 10 are antivax" then it makes more sense. And add to that the (unknown number of) people who are vaccinated but are uncomfortable with the mandates and it's potentially a sizable minority of people who feel sympathetic to protestors. Anecdotally, my impression is that pretty much everyone thought that medical/teachers mandate to be fine, as we already do that for those professions with other vaccines, but the later mandates gave some people pause as they're novel.

Usually we honk to express annoyance or frustration so "honk if you support X" signs just seem like a a real life application of "they're not booing us, they're saying 'boo-urns'".

edit: changed my mind on talking about this in detail.

I know one person who really is that lazy but they have understandable reasons. Theyre not even remotely anti vax.

Beware of deciding your own reasons for statistics. Numbers don't have to be explained with a neat story tying them all together. They are usually made up of of many different circumstances, some shared, many not.

10% is still a lot of people to be ascribing a neat single story too.

My little brother was lazy. Nothing covid related, it's just his personality, he's notorious at forgetting to WoF and register his car even after getting stung with a ticket. Luckily he has it now as he's in education.

They may have a bunch of different stories, but they all share one story along with it; their critical thinking skills stopped developing in year 2 and they are the only thing that matters in their own worlds.

I think the longer people go without being vaccinated and the more pressure is put on them the more their attitude crystallises towards antivax. So while people's initial reasons can be quite diverse, ultimately they're all on the same path. You can't lose your job and exist in a world where the unvaccinated are penalised without making a deliberate choice to not get vaccinated.

I work in essential services in a place that both has a vaccine mandate and is explicitly listed under locations that are excluded from requiring the public to use Vaxpass to access those services. My coworkers and I have literally put thousands of hours into work that is a direct response to the ongoing pandemic and its fallout. There has not been a time in the past 18 months where someone in my team hasn't been working on something that either directly or indirectly addresses fallout from the impacts of Covid.

And yet my coworker still get angry rants on her facebook from her cousin in Christchurch about how he's being forced to lose his job as a Firefighter because of government authoritarianism. And it's just like, get a goddamn grip. We've had teams crunching essentially every lockdown, 50 hour weeks, 3am releases on weekends, hotdesking / WFH on ridiculous schedules. We've had dozens - hundreds - of people, pouring in energy and sweat and exhaustion for months.

You? You can't take 15 minutes to have someone poke you in the arm. Cry me a goddamn river.

That 1/10 oddly enough hits real close to home.

Friend wanted a medical exemption due to immune diseases. Dr asked for one for her. Medsafe and MoH came back and said "all data says it's safe for you. Get one shot and if there's a reaction, which we really really don't think there will be, you can get the exemption for the rest."

So now friend is just choosing not to get it. Talking about how the govt is just trying to kill them. And gene therapy. And how they won't even take AZ as an option because blood clots.

And they're now making noises about but vaccinating the kids, unless it's absolutely required for school.

While their husband, who is fully vaxxed, is trying to talk them down from the ledge that they've walked themselves out on.

    It's very very very frustrating.

Medi-hotel seems to be pretty shambolic and poorly implemented, particularly as it affects families. There's a surplus of outrage these days, I know, but reading this actually made me angry.
One family, who had three children under six, were put on the 12th floor of an Adelaide medi-hotel with a window that had a "faulty bolt", leaving them in fear that their children would fall out.

...[the] family asked for balcony furniture to be taken away so their children could not climb it but their request was declined, so they brought the furniture inside... The father tripped over the furniture and broke his shoulder.

I didn't realise it was this bad actually, there's been precious little reporting of this stuff. I was on a different corner of the internet today and found out that in some travelers' experiences, there are actually no provisions made for cleaning the hotel rooms for the fourteen days of your stay. You get locked in, no-one comes in or goes out.

I experienced two weeks of hotel quarantine in Thailand, and although it wasn't great (with a baby and a four year old!) it sounds like the implementation is miles ahead of SA's attempt. The kids got actual real food provided to them, with options for different meal plans if the food was found unsuitable. After your first PCR test comes back negative, then they will institute a cleaning procedure for your room every two or three days. That is, the guest gets sent to an outdoor space (escorted by staff in PPE), room gets ventilated, then quickly cleaned by staff also in PPE.

So Australian hotel staff won't even take furniture out of a room to reduce the risk of kids climbing and falling off a balcony? What kind of madness is that? The hotels are giving toddlers chips and coke and telling people to deal with it? Yeah no problems at all with this whole situation.

Australia did damn well to keep COVID out so long, and some of the measures instituted were necessary, of course. But if you're forcibly taking citizens into custody, not because they've broken laws but because you want to keep the rest of the population safe, then have some damn respect for the people you're detaining.

At least Marshall has now reined in SA Health from straight up shoving people into vans despite them having approval to quarantine at home.

Oh, and here are some parents denied quarantine exemption to pick up their tragically dead son from WA, despite being vaccinated. Yep, real measured and human approach to border control there. Why do we even have a federation?

I don't know where he got the scorpions, or how he got them into my mattress.

    Yeah, pretty concerned.

We've basically got no way of applying increased restrictions for Omicron without going full lockdown.
The sequencing is just taking too long, so by the time close contacts are notified as confirmed Omicron some days later, the casual contacts or tested-negative-once close contacts are long gone.

It looks like we're riding on Omicron being less severe.

The premier is continuing to plead with media to please stick their head in the sand sorry I mean not make it about case numbers.

Also household close contacts no longer need to isolate for 7 days but just need to get a pcr test.

And the health minister is saying the opposite of the government, that you should wear masks indoors and be careful because they don't know Omicrons severity yet.

This is a political gamble, with lives on the line. Thanks NSW libs.

Well, my Christmas shopping is done, I’ve got 2 weeks off after this week and I’m only going into the office on Friday.

So I’m feeling okay right now.

But come January when I have to go back to work, I’m concerned they will go full dumb with Perrottet and get people back in the office.

worker shortages are already hitting australia - we're trying to recruit two field sales members & getting almost no applicants, and it also took 7 months to get a state manager role filled

I am fairly sure that those bold enough to put their foot down and say they feel unsafe coming into the office will have more leverage than they think.

I work retail, in a big department store, in the books section, which is right in the middle of the store so everyone walks up the center aisle and sees me toiling away in the book aisles and says Hi do you know where x is?

I've got my booster booked next week, but who knows how helpful that is for Omicron.

I'm just resigned to getting it at this point, and trusting the science that being vaccinated heavily reduces the chance of getting seriously ill.

I spent the entire trip into town in a low airflow corner behind six older women (50's-60's) who were chatting away without masks.

According to the American CDC, the hospitalisation rate for 50-64 is 7.4%.

So there's statistically an almost 50/50 chance that one of those women ends up in hospital.

I have to wonder about that prediction. Places with a lot more people, a lot more density, and near zero vaccinations often didn't get that high during the pandemic (New York peaked at around 19k/day with the 7-day average around 16k). NSW is 90% vaccinated, now. While that's not going to guarantee no transmission, I would like to know why this prediction seems to indicate that, despite having the vaccines now, NSW will have future experience equal or worse than those of denser, bigger places at the height of the pandemic.

Omicron spreads significantly faster than Delta, which already spreads significantly faster than original Covid. Those previous data sets you are talking about are old data, now superceded.

Incidentally it seems that Pfizer only provides 33% protection from transmission, so with the increased infectiousness of Omicron, and the fact that it cuts through vaccines like butter, and the complete lack of basically any restrictions whatsoever now, you have this prediction.

Throughout the world, Omicron is doubling in cases every two days. Exponential growth baby.

I'd say the current rapid escalation in new case numbers day over day isn't looking positive. It was 1360 day before last, 1780 today. Unless something turns that around (and it won't - they're not going to lock down again) then case number wise we're going to the moon and rolling the dice on hospitalizations.

We've gone from 2100+ cases last week to 5000+ cases this week (https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/stats-nsw.aspx)

R0 for Omicron is very high- it spreads easily even compared to say Delta. Also remember that the true number at the beginning of the pandemic was likely much higher, tests were in short supply!

Along with the R0 and no restrictions, we're also heading into super-spreader-event-season.
So aside the marginal vaccine protection, and potentially lower population density (super-spreader-events put a lie to that), we don't have a whole lot of advantage on New York.
