A quick googling tells me Black Knight was introduced 5 years before that novel was published...
Not really that one. Though I don't think the comparison is really apt for a number of reasons.
The Black Knight in comics was really not much like Elric of Melnibone aside from having an evil black sword. Hell, Elric's sword isn't exactly evil even.
The first couple comic black knights have even less similarity to Elric than the superhero black knight that Eternals is setting up.
Eternals basic plot fell apart when it got to explaining it:
The Celestials need planets of people to make baby Celestials, so send animals to clean the place up. Whoops, they went feral. Send machines to clean them up. That act human. That can bleed, be hurt and go rogue. And tell any of them the plan they may not like. WHY?!?! Idiots.

I thought it was clear
Arishem is an unreliable narrator.
The mid-credit sting introduces Starfox, brother to Thanos. Eternal.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
The writing made up for the actress’ not being, like, amazing
I have really bad face recognition, so I watched the entire movie convinced that Maisie Williams played her.
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

I quite liked Eternals, appreciated the shift in tone and storytelling for an MCU flick. The characters were fine, if not exactly compelling, I did buy their love for each other, that was very well done, but they just weren't particularly interesting as individuals.
Performances were overall pretty bland IMO, MVP was Kingo's face during the Bollywood scene. Kro was a very cool villain in terms of motivation and powers but underutilised and underwritten.
The other thing that bothered was that given what they're put on Earth to do, the Eternals don't seem particularly powerful. Even Ikarus would probably go down like a chump to Iron Man, and Sersi could be taken out by a random mugger if she wasn't paying attention.
Phastos' power-set was extremely cool, (some kind of... clockwork wizard?) and he was also the most entertaining character so I sincerely hope we see more of him. I also liked the fast lady an awful lot, there was something so intrinsically likable about her performance that really made me root for her.
I also found myself carrying an extremely high level of anxiety that something bad was gonna happen to Karun.
I do have one question about something that's driving me nuts, though
How is Eros both an Eternal and Thanos' brother? Aren't we told that Eternals are basically organic robots created by the Celestials, and Thanos is an organic being with parents and stuff? Or was the whole point of that scene meant to be a twist that Eternals aren't artificial after all?

Comics stuff since theres not really an MCU explanation yet:
So in the comics, the Titans (based on the moon Titan), were an offshoot of the Eternals of Earth(In the comics the Eternals/Deviants were the result of experiments on ancient humans by Celestials), who were eventually able to begin to reproduce. Eros and Thanos were sons of Mentor (the head of the Titans), Thanos looks the way he does because he had a dormant Deviant gene, though he was still an Eternal/Titan.
Also the Skrull race as a whole is a Deviant race. The original skrulls had similar experiments done on them by Celestials, but the deviants (with their shapeshifting abilities) were the victors of the wars, and became the dominant race.

If you want my theory on the MCU Eternals:
The story Arishem tells Ajak and Sersei is a lie meant to keep them in line. Icarus pushes forward with letting the Celestial break free because he feels obligated to Arishem. I think that their immortality comes from them being imbued with the Power Cosmic or whatever the equivalent that the Celestials use.
The Eternals are from Titan and their planet fell to ruin, as shown in Infinity War. We actually have no idea just how long Thanos had been doing his crusade against the galaxy/universe. He could have been doing that shit for hundreds or thousands of years.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Ah, I see. A shame they didn't go with that backstory for Thanos in the MCU, it would have helped explain why Thanos is so randomly god-like!
Are the Deviants a sentient / humanoid race in the comics, then?

No, Deviants are something that can happen in any species in the comics. Mutants are human Deviants.

I think they're just going to go with the simpler and more unsatisfying answer.
Adopted/stepbrothers.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Didn't care for Eternals. They were less characters than they were just plot devices. Ikaris looks bored through most of it. Sersi looks sad or confused and doesn't know how to use her powers after thousands of years. Thena is crazy. Gilgamesh sticks his dick in crazy. Somehow Kingo's valet has more going on than some of them.
Kingo's line about see you next planet was odd, because it felt like they died each time and were replaced by another set of fancy robots. I figured there were always a pile of these fancy robots on various planets, seeding new Celestials if that was even true. Also, if Celestials can spin up new Galaxies, why would one need the power stone to wipe out a world?
There were 10 Eternals in this flick, they should have cut 5.
Watched Eternals, overall...not bad? Probably my biggest complaint was that it felt like a very long movie especially for these characters, 2.5 hours is something I'd reserve for like an Avengers tentpole film and not characters that, even as someone who once read a ton of comics, I'm only marginally aware of. Streaming it wasn't so bad, but I think it would have tested me a bit in a theater. The conflict felt pretty organic, I could understand why the characters took the positions they did.
I was actually expecting them to kill off more of the cast in the final fight, so it was good at least at making me think there were real stakes in it. Hell, they even killed off Ikarus when they could have just had him fly off into the sequel.
After seeing Not Kit Harington in Hawkeye, I somehow convinced myself that this was another Not Kit Harington in this one and that Hollywood is actually full of Not Kit Haringtons. Still could be, I suppose.
This is the first movie where I felt the Marvel tie in stuff was incredibly shoe horned in to the detriment of the film.
Dane didn't need to be in it at all, and the set up for his future had nothing to do with anything and came completely out of nowhere.
The mid-credits scene is the first one that actually made me less interested in what's going on. If it wasn't for the stunt casting it would have been even more pointless.
It's a real odd movie, I wasn't a fan.

Hes a very famous musician whos also acted in a few things i guess. He was in a boy band in the early 2010s and was one of the most famous people on Earth. His solo stuff got a lot of airplay over the summer.
And I don't mean any of that as a condescending HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW THEM?!
I'd have no idea who he was if he wasn't in a catchy sesame street video singing the alphabet which made me google who he was.

Didn't enjoy Eternals that much, although the second half kept me a bit more interested than the first.
I was under the impression that the Eternals would be extremely powerful beings but that didn't translate on screen. They struggle against a handful of cannon-fodder fleshy dogs that don't look any more dangerous or powerful than the cannon-fodder dogs in infinity war. Feels like the Avengers could kick their ass.

Completely agree and it really bothered me. How they survived thousands of years without just, a random car crash or something killing them is crazy.

I meant more in society finding out "Holy shit, Wizards exist and they can do that"
Not about him having magic powers.
Any of the A tier superheros is effectively a wizard to you or me. Nevermind something like the Snap occurring, with or without the presence of wizards.
There's already demigods people know (Thor is identified when dressed casually in under a minute), what's one more person with world-cracking power?
yeah, but fewer people are going to think Thor can fix their spine or cure their cancer. People already get conned my fake mystical healing, now there's a guy who's generally accepted as magical?
I think it'd be interesting seeing how people react to that vs world cracking power that's exclusively used against "bad guys". Like a scene or two, not the whole movie.

I'm hoping after Multiverse of Madness goes full cosmic horror, future Dr. Strange stories can be more street level. Him solving local occult crimes a la Tex Murphy or Dresden Files.
having watched eternals I think it's biggest problem is just that it's a marvel movie; the basic idea of an estranged family bouncing through history while figuring out their origin is pretty interesting, but it's hamstrung by the fact that they at least ostensibly exist in the same world as the avengers (as the film feels compelled to keep reminding us.)
like even when the snap happens and fucks up the whole celestial program, eternals are committed to noninterference? seems a bit naff
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget
I thought that the non-interference stuff was handled OK
Their initial orders of "don't get involved" makes sense from a benevolent God, free will type perspective
Then the argument of "war drives population growth through advances in technology" made enough sense for the ulterior motive - it's not like we can point to an alternative prosperous society where that's proved otherwise, thanks, humanity
I'm reminded of the need to provide "enrichment" activities to zoo animals
And with the Snap specifically, something that went immediately counter to their real goal of population growth: I don't know, maybe Celestial Dude didn't want to blow his cover by telling them, "Oh wait, this you can interfere with," especially when they didn't have anything that seemed better than what the Avengers were bringing to the table in terms of raw power (unless Druig could mind control Thanos, I guess)
When you're considering everything from the viewpoint and timeline of a Celestial, it's hard to know what they would actually care about; the Snap didn't screw up reproductive capability, so Earth would get there in the end, just take longer

They replaced the last director because he wanted to go horror with it, that' why we have Raimi now. Whatever it ends up being, it'll be as safe and sanitised as the rest of the MCU.
