The Oscars are pointless, but fun to discuss

Yes, yes, the Oscars are largely meaningless, and often celebrate mediocrity (Looking at you, Crash). But they are still handy as a jumping off point for movie discussion. So let's talk Oscar.

A list of nominees can be found here.

This year's nominations are actually pretty good, for the most part. There are some that irk me (Lars and the Real Girl under best original screenplay? Seriously?), but I can see why most stuff is up there.

That said, maaaaaan did Atonement get nominated for way more than it should have. Cinematography, sound design, and soundtrack - those are all great. By all means, nominate away. But nominating its screenplay is a fucking joke, and I would personally come nowhere near considering it Top 5 material.

Oscars ain't the main Hollywood circlejerk.

    That'd be the SAG awards.

There Will Be Blood better win a bunch. Also, if there is a ceremony, i hope they do that thing where the nominated original songs are performed, because having three of the songs be from Enchanted is super.

FAG is more of a circlejerk but the Oscars are a bigger circlejerk. Ignoring the FAG awards is much easier.

It is a strong contender for my favorite movie ever.

But in the spirit of full disclosure, my previous favorite movie ever was Punch-Drunk Love.

I'd basically suck P.T. Anderson's dick, is what I'm saying here.

See, the thing is...it's kind of hard to say that he's genuinely a supporting actor in that film.

But "supporting actor" will forever be a very muddy field.

Hopefully, they will have a montage dedicated to Heath Ledger. Don't they do that whenever someone major dies? It'll be weird to see hwo they splice it, scenes from Ten Things I Hate About You right next to Brokeback and all.

He ain't always, but denying his talent is kinda silly. Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, Se7en - the dude has some chops, with a good enough director backing him.

Occassionally overwrought, but it's such an ambitious, sprawling movie that I find it endearing. I have a lot of respect for any movie that ballsy, so I cut it a little more slack than I might otherwise.

That said, I fucking hate Julianne Moore's character, and Melora Walters' character bugged me too. The script got a little sloppy in places.

Overall, though, I really like it. Flawed, and not on the same level as Boogie Nights, PDL, or TWBB, but still enjoyable.

First, if that were actually the basis of what constitutes the "best picture", Ratatouille would still lose, since there are several movies that were held in higher critical regard (such as "Once", which was also not nominated).

Also, in this fantastic dimension where critical reception is the only determinant of cinematic superlatives, fucking Enchanted is a better movie than both The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and This is England, not to mention There Will Be Blood, The Savages, and several other masterworks of film.

Basically what I'm saying is that I hope you're not actually that fucking thick.
