Some people still like running triple beam to help swat mactera. Return to sender also pretty much forces you into running the +ammo capacity and +magazine capacity mods to offset its downside of even further depleting the breach cutter's ammo pool.

I mostly just use the return to sender breach cutter for Dreadnought fights. For general purpose engineering, I've grown addicted to the FUN that is the rocket jump grenade launcher. I had a hard time putting it down ever since the first time that I managed to evac to the drop pod by calling in a supply drop and using the rocket jump grenade launcher to catapult myself up through the supply drop's hole up into the cavern above where the drop pod was waiting.

The only thing I've ever done was accidentally crushing a praetorian with a supply drop. I could say on purpose, but there's no way to do that intentionally, even if you always hope for it, haha.

Most definately faster compared to pickaxe as you can post up ontop of the sphere and don't need to travel around to hit any spawn location.
We generally have Driller clearing one side, while gunner and scout clears the other side.

Yeah if you're able to repeatedly hit the tips of the Lazer Rocks, they break pretty quickly. If I've been on those missions without a Driller, that's been my backup option.

It used to be possible to crush dreads with it, but I think that they removed it. My memory is foggy, but it might be worth attempting to crush bulk detonators with supply pods if ammo is tight. They're bigger targets than praetorians. But I guess if ammo was tight, then you wouldn't be able to afford a supply pod.

Absolutely. I can hit them without leaving the dozer, and take them out before they even start lazering. Fast spinup + accuracy mod. I've never found a faster way that's as reliable (My friend can take them out with explosives, but always runs out at inopportune times).

EDIT: I'm shooting high up, near the tip, not trying to cut them down. There's a point at the top that if you destroy it, it disables the beamer.

The rocket launcher is pretty good at killing the beamer rocks. The autocannon that I like is definitely the weakest choice for dealing with the beamer rocks. It will do the job but it will miss a lot first. Silver lining is that the fear mod+neurotoxin is good for crowd controlling the bugs to buy enough time to miss all of those shots against the beamer rocks.

I am going to grind out engineer to level 25 so I can start doing deep dives and earning cores. Probably stay away from the elite dives though, not sure I have the chops for it. I got in a pretty good group yesterday morning and we managed to knock out 4 or 5 missions in record time. Only hazard 3 but I think that's about as try hard as I want to go. I don't think the bonus XP and credits for hazard 4+ make it worth it. Although there are trophies for doing both so I supposed at some point I will probably give them a try.

Driller's Experimental Plasma Charger with thin containment field can easily destroy the beam rocks, easy shot if you are used to using it for mining stuff.
Scout can just grapple to the peak and mine the top to break them.
Engineer's grenade launcher can break the tops super easy too.

Each class has an option to deal with them easier than trying to mine through the main part.

I feel like Haz4 is a solid place to end up, once you get a decent overclock or two. Also don't forget that every week you get a 3 mission quest for more cores that can be done on any difficulty.

We mostly did Haz3. The folks I played with, that was more than enough even with full upgrades. Haz4 was a bit too much for them to handle. The only time we'd do it for the easy deep dive, and sometimes those took multiple times.

So it probably depends on your groups skill level with these types of games.

Currently I/we generally play on Haz4, used to play more frequently and more frequently did Haz5 / elite dives.

Personally I think you can develop some pretty bad habits on Haz3 if you have an end goal of doing Haz4+. I really like the chaotic nature of Haz4+ with larger waves and more enviornmental enemies and now find Haz3 to be talk and chill time.

The main thing that helps with haz4 and 5 is finding a weapon/perk combination that works well for you. It's hard when you're still missing a lot of the nice upgrades.

Also, incase you haven't yet, go ahead and purchase every single one of the normal upgrades for your gear. At least for the your armor, you actually get some small stat buffs just for owning more of the upgrades. It took me way too long to realize that since I had just been purchasing the upgrades that I actually wanted to equip. I don't recall if there are small boosts for the weapons. It unlocks paint schemes at least.

Yeah the stat boosts are only for armor and I am working on getting all of them.

So I needed to do an escort to unlock industrial sabotage. I find a group of three already doing it and hop in. Whoops hazard 5 and none of the other guys have a promotion yet. Well, maybe we can do it. Sweet zombie Jesus was I wrong. Not only did the enemies take significantly more damage, deal significantly more damage, but they were also way more of them. We tried twice before the host disbanded. Then tried another group doing hazard 4. We managed to get down to the wire but the dozer blew up before it could finish the heart off. So yeah, definitely staying at 3 until I get at least a few overclocks for my warthog and possibly beam cutter since everyone says it is so nice. I just unlocked the assignment for it so I should have it by the time I go to sleep in a few hours.

It all depends on your group. One of my friends likes to just screw around with weapons. He's not looking to play the game in an efficient manner, he's looking to drop as many satchels as possible to make a big hole or pepper the area with proxy mines haha. So Haz 3 is usually the best for us in that case. Once you get to Haz 4 and 5 you need to be more efficient with ammo, call downs, etc.

We haven't played in a while though, maybe there are some mods to increase Nitra to help balance his lack of efficiency with increased mobs.

Yeah they are pretty annoying but most classes have ways to deal with them. Gunner has zippy's to get them off the ground. Scout can grapple away to a safe spot to fire, and the engineer can throw a platform up to get off the ground. The driller is harder to get away from them, but can lay down sticky fire which if they get hit, tends to send them in another direction.

I got my promotion with my engineer. And the first overclock it gave me was the lower spread, increased weak point damage mod for the warthog. Which was perfect because that was the one I wanted most. I really feel like I can do some damage now, although I go down a lot. Like a whole lot. Once I unlock the last passive perk I am going to reevaluate what I have and try to make myself a little sturdier.

My secret shame is that despite having all the Trophies from a bunch of what seem like hard games I am actually pretty fucking terrible. Like all the From Soft games, several pretty difficult rogue likes/lites. But I am just so fucking dedicated that I brute force my way through. If you didn't know, you can command Bosco to finish the pipes for you, once you lay them down. You can also tell it to repair the broken sections when they pop up. It really speeds up playing those missions solo.

On a related note, once you are riding a pipe, if you press and holding the build/repair button, it will automatically stop your movement and start the build/repair at the next needed junction.
Also, holding the sprint button while riding a pipe will keep the camera centered. Basically useless, but fun to get that roller coaster feeling.

You're kind of approaching that the wrong way. Sturdier isn't really the goal. You need to adopt more of a DEX focused approach and avoid getting hit in the first place. I also reccomend the armor upgrade that hastens the delay before your shields begin to recharge.

The Dash perk is probably one of the all around best. It gives you a quick speed boost that you can use quickly get some breathing space, and it is on a relatively short cooldown. As an engineer you'll also want to try to manipulate the terrain to help you escape the bugs. Four main approaches are shelves, stalactite fortresses, bug repellent foam, and what I call jungle gyms.

Shelves are what I'll often employ during during salvage missions where I'm forced to defend a comm uplink or something. In essence I pick the rockwall behind me and use many platforms to create a large flat shelf to create a roof over my head. This keeps ranged bugs from sniping you from the ceiling and prevents bugs from crawling down to your back. It makes the defense less 3D and more 2D so that it's easier to keep tabs on all of the fronts. The shelf should be big enough so that you have time to react to bugs that crawl around the top of the shelf on their route to you. You'll also want to throw down some bug repellent foam on the ground in the path of main routes of bug approach to slow them down. You'll need to be conservative when using bug repellent. Bugs always take the shortest route to you, but they attribute a distance multiplier to distance walked over foam. So if you put a few patches of foam down they'll detour around the foam, but if the detour is too long they'll just walk right over the foam.

Stalactite fortresses basically are where you pick a stalactite and expand a branching series of paths out from that stalactite. This way melee bugs must approach by walking down the stalactite and then towards you. Bugs don't jump, so you're free to traverse to different paths of the fortress or even abandon the fortress outright if you get overwhelmed. Careful use of foam landing pads or hover boots should be used when leaping down from great heights.

Jungle Gyms are just adhoc obstacle courses that you setup to give yourself some good platforms to jump between. Bugs don't jump, so by jumping around between platforms, you can cross distances that force bugs to take detours to follow. For example maybe there is a hill that you can climb. You can extend a quick group of platforms from a nearby wall so that you can jump from the hill to the platform line. Bugs can't jump, so they'd be forced to detour to follow you.

This steam guide illustrates those stalctite fortresses pretty well. Shelves and stalactite fortresses are pretty significant platform investments, so I generally only consider them if we need to setup a significant defensive emplacement near a static location like a mining head or something.

    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1954749278

Barring anything that you can create real defenses around, you can throw down a quick line of bug repellent foam on the ground and make an effort to kite over it. Some bugs will detour around the foam and buy you a few extra moments.

It depends on which dwarf. The pipe refinement missions can be a pain solo for most of the dwarves, but driller can solo it pretty easy. You simply find the morkite well, bring up your map to find where the mobile refinery platform is, and then drill a tunnel straight through solid rock in a straight line to the refinery. Then extend the pipe through your tunnel straight to the well.

It's even pretty easy to solo the battles on this mission type if you use the mining pipes to create a roller coaster bit where either two pipes get close to each other at points or it loops back near itself so that you can spend the battles "sprinting" about by riding the pipes 24/7 and leaping between pipes to give the bugs a slip.

    edit:
Here's an image roughly depicting what a stalactite fortress may look like, which are shameless stolen from the steam guide that I linked. The guide lists "Ensy" and "Frisbee" as the creators so credit for the images go to them. The bottom string of platforms is an approach ramp that you use to access the fortress via jumping. It's important that the only way to "walk" to the fortress is for bugs to walk along the ceiling and down the stalactite.

    5tfiqkq2p06f.png

    gh490gi6qrtu.png

    edit 2:
Another way to mitigate some damage is the beast master perk. Taming your own bug, "Steve", can help draw some fire away from you. Normally you want to tame one of the tankier guard bugs, although the slasher bug is pretty much invincible on regenerating bugs missions. It doesn't work as well when dwarves on your team are throwing out lots of AOE damage though.

I'm a huge fan of the hover boots perk, and you can avoid some sticky situations via leaps of faith down into large drops, but hover boots aren't really meta and might create some friction in group play if your teammates can't follow suite.

I'm 90% sure that you avoid fall damage by dropping on top of someone's head, so if your team is good at following instructions you might be able to orchestrate a situation where somedbody uses hoverboots to fall down and then everybody else "goombas" you.

That is all really good advice, thank you for taking the time to write that up. I am definitely going to give that guide a read through. I actually switched to the charm glyphid perk after seeing it used by the two people I ran my first deep dive with. The damage seems pretty negligible, but it can at least draw some aggro. I actually did switch to bug repellent foam after not using it because at the higher difficulties it seemed like creating a kill zone/using it defensively was the better use. I also have been browsing the Reddit looking for tips. I saw a discussion about how the community feels about diggers creating bunkers to hide in/funnel enemies. At first I thought that seemed like a great idea, but then the first time I played with someone who did it ended badly. A detonator walked up and before I could get out of the bunker my teammates killed it and we wiped.

My main advice is beeline towards that Dash perk. It makes a HUGE survivability difference. I mostly just make shelves since engineer is my go-to class for salvage missions whereas the only time that I'd want to invest in building a stalactite for is in missions where you're going to be defending a singular static position multiple times, which mostly boils down to point extraction and refinery where I prefer using gunner and driller respectively.

As for bunkering, I mostly play solo and I don't bunker when I play solo. The main gripe against bunkering is that it is pretty boring. It sounds like that particular driller that you played with did it wrong. A proper bunker will have an escape route built into to avoid situations where an oppressor or more rarely a detonator boxes you in.

I suppose a stalactite fort can also be kind of boring, but the scenario of those forts is always a bit different compared to bunkers which all look the same. Also the open nature of a stalactite fort means that you always have clear lines of sight for approaching detonators and everyone can escape by leaping off of the fort. Fall damage may be a concern, but foam landing pads can mitigate that.

Anyone want to do the weekly core hunt or deep dives or something? I need to get matrix cores.

I already did both for this week, but not the elite. I still haven't unlocked hazard 5 since I don't ever plan on running them. The only trophies involving level 5 are never going to happen all I am not worried about it.

Fuck the haunted modifier on this week's deep dive. First time ever doing that one and I got downed 6 or 7 times.

I don't think I'll ever be bored of Deep Rock Galactic. I could play it after months on the lowest difficulty and it would still feel so satisfying.

I recently did a dreadnaught mission and got exposed to a Hiveguard for the first time. It was intense.
