Honestly I wouldn't check a computer again but I've had a really bad experience with doing so. Flying from Califonia to Michigan in the middle of the summer my CPU literally melted to the heatsink.

For flying with a computer, your best bet is to Ship it to yourself via UPS/fedex.
If you call ahead to your hotel they will receive a package for you and hold it until you check in for up to like a week or so.

In the bottom floor of the WSCTC there is a fedex shipping center where you can ship it back to yourself at the conclusion of PAX.

DO NOT CHECK YOUR COMPUTER AT THE AIRPORT! Those fuckers will destroy the thing.

I'd still take the hard drive out and make sure that things secure as can be since I haven't had good experiences with that either but maybe I'm just terribly unlucky. Would be just my luck.

what would you guys suggest using to move around my huge antec 900 case and 22" lcd?

Little late on the response here but anyways, you could do what i did in a modified way. Get yourself a nice large suitcase and some towels/padding for the insides and you can load everything in one nice package, with wheels, and a handle.

I did this last year with my case and my 22" LCD. Granted i had a mATX case so i was able to cram it into a carry-on size suitcase but if ya went with checked luggage size you should be able to get everything in with a little extra room to cram in "shock proofing" material. Plus you dont have to carry all your accesories in a separate bag, you can pack them all right inside.

I remember seeing you with that last year. I was wondering if that was considered carry-on. It seemed kinda large.

I posed the flying-with-a-PC question here and got some good advice.

Could've been me. I showed up with my mATX case and 22" LCD in a piece of luggage. I drove up, but having it all in there made it much easier to lug around. Wheels are nice, especially ones that don't squeal loud enough to cause hearing loss.

Oh, it was a very specific case, on wheels, most definitely NOT in a suitcase...

WD-40 would have been most welcome in that situation

Early estimates are for around 325 byoc systems, and the byoc price for all three days is expected to remain at $25.

This is where I add the normal disclaimer that details like this can change very, very easily this far in advance, and all the other stuff you guys already know.

Also, one more time to affirm, if you're bringing a laptop, it's really, really smart to invest in a laptop lock. We do what we can to keep security super-tight and we've never had any significant problem of this nature, but it's the difference between "You should be fine" and "You will be fine". Isn't that worth $12?

Seriously, has it been a problem before? I thought it was just common sense: laptop+public place with hundreds of people = laptop lock.

    Not been a problem.
Last year one got misplaced but was found later in the room.

We are just going to hammer the idea into people though that if they bring a laptop, to bring a laptop lock.

I have a friend that works for FedEx so I was able to abuse his employee discount to ship my tower to the Sheraton. A few things to keep in mind. Take the hard drives out and bring them with you in carry-on luggage/in the car/on the train. If you have a screw-less card holding system in your case find a way to reinforce it or remove the cards so they don't pop out and go flying around the inside of your case.

Sheraton specific info: They will hold your package for (if I remember right) up to a week before your check-in date. They will charge you $25 for this service. You request your package from the concierge desk in the front lobby. The business center on the 2nd floor of the new tower has a shipping center in it. I'm not sure if you can purchase shipping from there, but they have everything to re-box your computer and both UPS and FedEx pickup packages there.

Another word on the screwless cases- I shipped my PC, and though the cards were fine, my DVD drives slid all around and i found them shoved about an inch and a half back into my case. They still worked, but it was a bit scary seeing. So, screw down the drives too.

Is it just me being crazy, but I'm thinking about building my BYOC PC actually at the show. I mean, I know all the parts are going to be shipped in good containers and I'll be able to pack them up in the boxes and ship them all home after I'm done.

Meh if you're going SFF size get something non-Shuttle so you're not stuck with proprietary junk and it will actually support mATX mobos and decent a decent PSU.

    I am inclined to agree.

I personally would never go SFF though, I need more than 2 hard drives :P

Well the actual mATX SFF's usually support at least two. Mine supports three and I have two in it, it's just the wiring situation gets more complicated as you add more drives and cards in. Also you're usually stuck with the stock coolers for the most part which is rough but usally enough since you're rarely OC'ing these things.

I've looked at mATX stuff and I can't seem to find anything comparable. The ONLY case I've seen that even comes close to what I need has a huge ass ribbon cable for the graphics card and was really expensive. I would agree propriatarty sucks but I may just get a shuttle case in early august with an 8800gt and call it good.

And pay $1000 more. But ribbon cable to the graphics card? Huh?

Biggest problem right now IMO isn't the cases themselves but the mATX mobos being compotent but not quite comparing to their full size counterparts for features/performance.

Then again if I had the extra money to pay for a shiney all spiffy when I get it system I probably would.
