    I think a lot of sports suffer from the effect where they become more and more formalised and ritualised until they don't really resemble the activity they emerged from anymore

    Ski jumping and luge are probably two where this is most apparent

    At heart they're "who can jump the furthest off this hill" and "who can ride a sledge fastest down this slope", respectively, but all of it is now so minutely specified in the interests of producing comparable results that it leaves the casual observer wondering how you even get into this as an activity
