Video about map changes through the patches. The most important being the addition of an icon for Prawn Guy's shack. Finding that beforehand was an unbelievable pain.
I cannot believe you're allowed to invade people in the Haligtree what a fucking massacre, I just invaded five people in a row and three of them died before I even saw them and the other two got bitten in half by a huge ant or some shit while we were fighting
Broke as fuck in the style of the times. Gratitude is all that can return on your generosity.
I must say this slow and sleazy NG+ playthrough is even better than the first, I'm really stretching out and gettin comfortable in a way that reminds me of nothing but really really really getting into that good good DS2 postgame groove

I found Prawn Guy on accident while running back to fight Smarag because I being the genius I am did not seek out a nearby grace before engaging the dragon

So I'm now basically done with the game so I can pop in here...
Why do I keep seeing people say Malenia is "the hardest boss FromSoft has ever made"? I don't think she's even the hardest boss in this game. Is this, like, a meme? Does she just giga bully first time Souls players so it came from that?
God, this sounds like such a shitty humblebrag. I'm just trying to figure out how people are putting her ahead of Friede, Midir, Ludwig, and the other true nightmare mode fights (and like, fully half the bosses in Sekiro).

I'm also in your same camp, although Elden Ring is the only FromSoft game I've played
From the early discussion of her, I remember there being a lot of focus on her ability to heal, and suggestions that you should not use a shield to fight her (because her healing works through that) and that you shouldn't use any spirit summons or even other people (because she'll just use them as juice boxes)
Both of which, for me at least, proved entirely untrue
But I know my earliest attempts against her involved going solo and a lot of rolling and those were not great
I suspect there's also simply a lot of playstyle variance, things that work well against other enemies not working well against her, but I can't really speak to that having only played the one way
The difficulty is going to vary wildly based on your build. Like, most bosses got crushed by my build (spellsword). Godskin Duo? Second try. Dual gargoyles? Second try. Three crystalians (pre-nerf)? First try.

I only failed to oneshot Malenia because I didn't know she was going to divebomb me or that it would oneshot me from full health. Second go I brought out mimic and went full ham because I'd already seen her timings, and she went down hard. She bleeds, staggers, can be parried, and moves/attacks very slowly compared to other human type enemies.
Absolute hardest boss in Elden Ring for me was the magic guard dog statue in catacombs. Fuck those things, their timing throws me off and I eat heavy damage on a misroll.
I do think the Elden Ring bosses are a lot more variable, because some things that in other games would kind of filter for the skills that later bosses require don't really do it. Like I just charge-beamed a lot of bosses to death as a mage because they sat still. So Black Knife Tiche was a particularly rough fight where I had to keep swapping loadouts since it had been a while since someone couldn't just be damaged fast enough by infinite mana to get them down.
And then the Elden Beast sucked for a bit because it kept being out of range, until I realized I could use the bow spell.

Malenia has an incredibly difficulty spike whenever she pops he blooming lotus bullshit attack.
Because if you have a camera lock on her and try to dodge roll through it, you just roll back into her.
I beat her in about 3 tries after I unlocked the camera from her when she hopped up in air (and apparently you can just cheese it by chucking a frost grenade at her when she rises up)
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I could never get the frost pot timing right for interrupting Malenia. If you don't start your throw the exact second she begins rising it'll be too late, so I only pulled it off on accident one time when I thought I was healing
one thing that makes malenia strong is that she's very good at exploiting hesitation, if you watch streamer compilations or something you'll notice that any moment where they start hanging back at middle distance trying to figure out what she's going to do next is the moment at which things start to go very badly
she's a snowball character in a moba and if you let her farm she'll get your ass
So I'm now basically done with the game so I can pop in here...

Her moveset is a hard counter to certain playstyles in a way that none of the other bosses in the game are. I say this having cleared the game, myself. I had near zero trouble on the Elden Beast, and minor trouble with Maliketh.
That said, I found Sekiro so hard and punishing as to refund it, I found Bloodborne as an entire whole ass game to be too fast and too hard, and overtuned in general. Midir remains as the only non-kill for me in DS3.
So, yeah. In terms of the whole series, Malenia isn't really in the top 5 for difficulty. In comparison to the rest of this game and MOST of the actual Souls series bosses, she wipes the floor.

That's true, the attempt I spent hanging back trying to learn her she just sat on my head. Once I got aggressive she was staggered about half the time anyway.
yeah by the standards of the from software pantheon of hard bosses, malenia is one of the most staggerable they've made. how well your build can exploit that plays a big role in her difficulty

I've been kinda burnt on ER recently, but I might make a Wretch and the closest thing to armor I'll let them wear is like, commoner or aristocrat clothes.
also melania can say what she wants but radahn won that fight
i saw a salty reddit post where someone killed malenia but died to a phantom clone that persisted after her death, and her death monologue lasted long enough to stall the victory screen so it didn't count
it occurred to me that that's exactly what heppened to radahn

she has hyper armor on like 60% of her shit, y'all are crazy, you have to respect the hell out of her
Nah. Summon your mimic tear and unga bunga her face off, she spends most of the fight flinching or staggered.
What does this mean? I'm sorry but I get a little annoyed the "just dual kamayamayas in between charging your avacado bong" type nonsense replies like its common parlance.

Mash attacks with a big weapon or two.
For instance, I powerstanced Curved Greatswords and just L1'd her to death.

I would have had a lot more success using Radhan's greatswords in the Malenia fight if I didn't perpetually whiff every attack by inches because I kept fucking up my spacing.

Give her space and she goes ham.
Maybe that’s why her blade has no guard? Her sword design is super weird in general, tbh.
Nah. Summon your mimic tear and unga bunga her face off, she spends most of the fight flinching or staggered.
and their only weapons are the various clubs

I think her blade has no guard because it was designed to be built into her prosthetic
You don't need a guard to protect your hand as much when your hand is the guard, y'know?
Also, Rogier's Rapier with a magic affinity and the glintblade phalanx is a pretty fun time if someone manages to get up in my face
