The band I cared most about (and felt most seen through their music) as a teen
Celebrated my last days of high school by going to what wound up being their last show in the state before the breakup
Announced a greatest hits with a bunch of unreleased demos and their then-last brand-new song when I was starting college
Announced the reunion the week I started my current (and first financially-comfortable) job
Now they release their first new song as I'm recovering from an illness/health scare during a point in time when that's never been more of a concern for me (in more ways than one, between COVID and depression)
Not at all an exaggeration to say MCR has been there for me always when I've needed it. When I've been happy and when I've needed to be happy, when I've been comfortable and when I've needed to be comforted, when I've been scared and unsure and when I've been more confident than ever; they just always found a way to know either way. And to show up for it, for each new chapter of my life, each time in some capacity
This is Jawbreaker / Jets to Brazil for me, pretty much to a T.
So now I’ve just gotta hold out for that new record.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
The new Black Keys album Droput Boogie is out today. Two tracks in and it's definitely back to that good good Black Keys sound. The last album Delta Kream was great but it was mostly just a cover album of Junior Kimbrough songs which was a little bit of an odd release, but still great if you like Mississippi delta blues.
Edit: to be clear it's still absolutely dripping in that bluesy tone. I'd say it's much closer to their early stuff like Rubber Factory or Chulaholma.
Oh shit, a new Findlay album also just dropped! The Last of the 20th Century Girls. If you haven't listened to Findlay she is fucking great go listen to Forgotten Pleasures right now, just real greasy sleazy girl pop.
Gonna Give it a listen when I get through the Keys stuff.
I really wanted to like the new MCR song but it mostly stoked fears I already had that the new album won't follow naturally from Danger Days but instead try to get back to the sound they had a few albums ago.
Anyway I started looking at the new Kendrick album and oh boy is "Auntie Diaries" gonna create some TAKES.
Pearl Jam was in Oakland last night and their drummer tested positive for COVID but the show went on and they invited a local kid to sit in with them and it looks like he did an amazing job
I'm not sure if I love the song itself, but I'm definitely loving the energy and attitude
Nearly all their songs are like that. The album they put out a couple of weeks ago has 18 songs and is 21 minutes long.
I went to their Youtube and found "I am not maternal" and I'm absolutely loving that one. As a longtime fan of Japanese punkish/thrashy girl bands, I'm duty bound to go through the rest of their catalog now.

Ah, fuck, yep. There it is. That right there's why Finn is one of my favorite lyricists ever. Subtle like a sledgehammer, funny like a funeral.

Hey, since it's 1:30 in the morning and I'm in a mood, let's round out my Top 3 Adult Men I've Never Met Who Can Make Me Cry on Cue with John Darnielle and Blake Schwarzenbach:
This one came my way via a very clearly "undisclosed but still an ad" Instagram ad and usually it's an instant skip but I did find it enjoyable so I guess they got me https://youtu.be/P8Qj3prpiUk

The Youtube algorithm can sometimes be real good, because it just dropped this video of Craig Finn and The Mountain Goats doing "This Year" live, and it's a pretty killer version.

I used to smoke Chesterfields because of that Jawbreaker song, but the gas station I got them from only ever had Kings a few times.
unfiltered, just like "cultivating a Style means pain and sacrifice hack cough wheeze"
also I Typed for Miles and Sweet Avenue were mainstays.
edit:
This cigarette it could seduce a nation with its smoke. Crawling down my tired throat, scratches part of me that's purring, softly stirring.
Sweet Avenue is causing my first real craving since I quit smoking, haha
edit 2: This new MCR song is indeed pretty good.
