Oh, and I almost forgot: if anyone is interested, my wife and I are playing Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium on Saturday at 6pm at twitch.tv/nyteworks, and we're going to check out the two Mega Man arcade games (along with other stuff, as time permits).
You know, I never looked at this cover *really* closely but that's actually an extremely good likeness of Wily for clay or whatever that is. Like, in the days when stuff like bad boxart Mega Man were pretty common, that's actually kind of impressive.
I've been following this game's development for years and it looks better every time I see it.
Looks cool but kind of unusual art style. Like pseudo 8-bit but only with the color choices, not the graphics (which are more 16-bit). Very weird :P Also lack of black outlines is always gonna look strange to me But does look very fun.
I would describe it as "game boy color advanced" what with each sprite having a limited palette but less restriction on how many distinct palettes are allowed.
I am curious what your opinion on the original X8 is. I recall a lot of reviewers dumping on it because it's length/scope was more on par with the older games in the series, at a time when $50 was getting you bigger/longer games. I wonder if it would have been better received a few years later as a $20-30 XBLA/PSN release.

X8 is fine. Good even! Not as good as maybe X4 or the SNES games, but it's good. I've always said its greatest sin is that it just came out after X7, so it's understandable why nobody looked at the dang thing.
And I always give a special shout out to the voice acting, which was awesome. And I think they knew they had something, because it was X8, Command Mission, and Maverick Hunter X that all used the same group.
Now that I've mentioned it, I kinda want a remaster of Command Mission now. I don't remember if it was genuinely good, or if my memory is just saying it was. But still, jrpg Megaman. I've just got a feeling it's in that purgatory of games at the time where nobody saved the source code to stuff.

Just gave this a shot. Only has the intro stage but it is pretty solid so far! I've only got two issues:
1. There's one really long gap in the first segment I wasn't sure how to traverse (without debugging myself an armor set).
2. The capsule that gives you a leg armor doesn't tell you or demonstrate what the armor actually does. (It gives you a double jump and/or an extra air dash.)
Speaking of MMX fangames, I'm still loosely following the development of Corrupted, which has more of a ZX-style Metroidvania overworld formula to it. I am itching to try it but the devs aren't going to be putting out a public release for quite a while.

Personally, I love X8*. To me, it's like "what if they made a Mega Man arcade game" (that wasn't like Power Battle/Fighters) with the way the levels are structured and the variety they have and everything. And probably the lives system, too.
Strangely, I could have sworn it was a cheaper game when it came out, like in the $40 range.
* Except the vehicle levels. I hate those. Legacy Collection's features make them bearable, at least.

I could be misremembering, and now that I think about it, I do recall other PS2 games launching at $40. But for the most part, it was very rare for a game to launch at a price below that. Only with price drops over time would it get down to $30 or $20. Still, I do remember reviewers being a bit harsh at the time, and game length seemed to be a factor.
I've thought about giving X8 another shot after all these years. I bought MMXLC1 without thinking, since it's 3 great games and one solid one. But man, MMXLC2 is basically just X8 and a pile of doo-doo.

I never played X8. I kinda stopped with X5 when they started naming robots after Guns & Roses band members... The X series sounded like it really went off the rails after that.
Never did play X4, would like to try that sometime - I hear it's good (except for the cutscenes... "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOORRRRRRRRRR?!?!")
Yeah, X4 is great aside from the story. Honestly, I've never really liked any of the attempts at narrative in any of the MM games, but the X games get especially bad because of how much time they spend on it.
Like, they totally could've just opened every X game after the first with a text box that said "Somehow Sigma has returned." and nothing else until the end of it with a shot of X looking contemplative on a cliff thinking "Will I ever stop fighting?" and nothing of value would have been lost.
X5 is the best, I will continue to die on this hill.
I just love the ending implications. Especially of Sigma saying "There's somebody else out there who hates you as much as I do". They completely open the door and all but confirm that Wily exists in some capacity.
...And then they do completely nothing with that. And apparently that was the plan all along since it was supposed to jump to Megaman Zero after that. Screw you. You can't fuckin' blue ball me like that.

I do hope we see more outside of Classic here, but at least Fire Man and Ice Man are two who have rarely been done.
Or, sticking to Classic, I sure hope we get Turbo Man and Nitro Man!
