Eh, this position is likely shit, but ambiguity is part of life. Often when functions or organizations are developing, there's a level of ambiguity as to what responsibilities are everyone's vs. specific people. Over time, we've learned that self organizing groups are generally more effective than top down designs, so good organizations always have a level of variability in duties. If everything is defined as the outset your organization will only be as good as the first leader and their knowledge of the domain. Workers are better at defining how domains should operate (see: lean/Toyota production system) as they understand more of the mechanics and impacts.
So what happens when people have agency? Things change and sometimes shit falls through cracks and has to be dealt with, so some level of ambiguity coupled with basic "be responsible" is what you rely to catch things. There's also many questions around "how big does this function need to be?" That has changing answers as a company scales.
All of that said, it's equally likely that it's "we have no clue what we're doing, so be prepared to do a wide variety of things as we get our shit together." As someone that's built up a new function in a large organization, there's a lot of ambiguity early as you figure out the best way to fit into a larger whole.
If you are expecting folks to just "be responsible" and take the heat that comes with the accountability for when they fail at that then they best all be getting manager salaries.
Exactly. People think putting this in the description means they don't have to be accountable for good work definition when it should mean they're hiring someone to throw equity/attention at to help define their world moving forward.

It's time for my annual "Try to get the networked printers at work to talk to my laptop" attempt.
I had vaguely hoped that in the intervening 12 months, some progress might have been made. But no, the printer manufacturers are still dead set on refusing to release working network drivers, and the IT department is still dead set on not fixing any of the persistent ongoing networking issues we have at this end of the building.
I can see the printer. I can touch the printer. I can even, god help me, ping the printer. But I cannot use the printer.
Also I went to boot up the behemoth of a Windows machine I have stashed under my desk for software emergencies, in the hope that it would play nicely (or at all) with the manufacturers drivers, but it scooted me over to a BitLocker screen claiming that "the configuration has changed". Since I got this computer as a hand me down from god knows where, good luck knowing what that key is!
Was troubleshooting and installing a new projector system in a conference room this morning, for a building that we aren't even really responsible for and we're just doing this as a favor, when suddenly this very angry woman bursts in and starts lighting into us about "I wish people would tell me when things like this are happening, it's bullshit that I have a meeting in here soon and now some random people I've never seen before are using this room"
Yes, she actually addressed us as "some random people" and I'm honestly impressed that the guy I was doing the install with handled it as professionally as he did. But good God I can't fucking stand admin assistants who think they can talk down to people just because their boss has a fancy office; she calmed down in a hurry once she realized who we were and what we were doing.
We still left without finishing the install though. 100% could have finished before her meeting started, but if you start off by being a huge dick about it then, well, other priorities and all that.

Yeah like, it was mostly just that she didn't seem to expect us to even respond. She just burst in, started ranting, and then seemed surprised when we actually replied back instead of immediately leaving or whatever.
Even just something as brusque as "what are y'all doing here? I have this room booked" would have been fine, things get miscommunicated and double booked all the time, it happens.
Whatever, it's fine now and she apologized via email (turns out she was the one who emailed our boss requesting the favor in the first place, which is just... lmao)
Did u know that by default, Inkscape will change the python system path to its own little python interpreter? Like some kind of asshole?

Inkscape: Hello? I don't know what that is.
Me: I didn't know I was asking you.
Inkscape: Well, you did, so... I don't know what that is.
Me: What? Why did you show up when I dialed python?
Inkscape: I re-routed all python communication to me.
Me: And you don't know what pip is?
Inkscape: Please stop asking me that.
Me: Why would you take over these python calls if you don't know about basic functionality?
Inkscape: Look, buddy, do you want to do some vector art or what?
It's extremely aggravating to tell the same buyer and the same customer week after week that it the delivery address is "wrong," the shipment went to the "wrong" address
And correcting the address is still the buyers responsibility.

I passed a practical test today on going into contaminated areas and taking radiation surveys.
It was a bit nerve racking, as if you fail the test you lose your radiation qualifications and have to re-take a 6 week course! The way the test runs, there are like 20 so called "critical" steps which if you fuck up one of them, you fail. You need to nail all of those steps. AND they aren't allowed to tell you on the spot that you just failed. You have to finish the whole thing. So theoretically you could fail step one and then do this whole long list of meticulous stuff and then be told, oops you failed at step 1. The whole thing takes 1-1.5 hrs too, there's quite a lot of little things to remember, easy things to forget or fuck up.
Also if I lost my rad qualification I would need to be escorted to my work location by a qualified co-worker, so it would be a pain in the ass for more than just me lol
Pretty big relief that its done! I've been stressing for like a whole week about it.

It costs nothing, for anybody, to be nice to people. I will never understand that kind of shit.
Hot take but I disagree. It actually costs mental energy and effort sometimes.
Is it worth it? Usually! But that doesn't mean it costs nothing.
If you want to pick nits, then sure, even opening your mouth to begin with costs energy. The point is that it requires no more energy to not be an asshole to people who are trying to help you. In the service industry the bar for “being nice” is exceedingly low and basically just means “this person wasn’t a rude asshole to me.” It doesn’t require small talk or fake cheerfulness. It’s just a matter of acting like you’re talking to a person, and if that somehow isn’t your default when you are, in fact, talking to a person, then you’re just wrong.
Edit: to be clear, this was more of a general thing, not specifically referring to the story about the admin above. Losing your temper after being frustrated happens! It’s not just blanket automatically excusable, but it’s absolutely forgivable with an apology.

You might, but that doesn't make it right. If that's a thing a person consistently does, I'd say that person has some introspection to do and some work needs doing.
I would actually argue it takes more spoons to yell at someone than to be level-headed. But, I am also incredibly difficult to anger, due to reasons that would take a lot longer to explain than I really want to get into at the moment.

Honestly, yelling is such a relief sometimes. But I try to do it when it won't hurt anybody! Like yelling in my car, or yelling to the sky when in my office. When I lose my temper with others, I almost always come back to myself immediately and apologize, unless they've been a right bastard to me prior to me yelling.

People need outlets. Paradoxically, adults have fewer options than kids, due to social expectations and lack of free time. So they resort to maladaptive means of stress relief in the environment most associated with stress, like the workplace. You can't really avoid hurting others if that's the only place you're able to unload.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
Yeah, it's important to find a coping mechanism or outlet for your anger. I grew up with two parents who were incapable of that, so I had to deal with getting yelled at, virtually every day, for extremely minor things that didn't warrant that level of anger, because they had a bad day or whatever, and had they gone off like that at work it would obviously cost them their job, or worse.
However, pouring out your anger on someone undeserving of it is the worst possible outlet imaginable. I made sure I would never be that person, and so far I think I've done a pretty good job of it, and it doesn't feel like it's cost me anything. It feels like the opposite of that.
