Using type to create shapes?

I am looking for a how-to for this technique.

It might be hard to explain. I want to use multiple strings of type to form the shape or silhouette of an object, such as a bird, or a human, or a heart, or a hand. Does this make sense? A while ago Rogers wireless stores had posters up using this technique. Also veer.com sent out a brochure that did this.

I don't mean a vector shape that has type flown inside it... it almost looks like multiple text strings were duplicated and painfully resized and arranged to form the shape...some oversized, some smaller.

I have scoured the webs for an example to show here, but cannot find one.

Any thoughts? I am well-versed in all of the leading design apps.

Thanks.
