I watched the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special. It was surprisingly good! Definitely had a feel of something they just shot with Bautista and Klementieff on an off day from shooting Guardians 3, but it had kind of a sweet, charming attitude to the whole thing. Kind of unnervingly, the soundtrack consisted entirely of stuff from my personal xmas playlist.
The Old 97s did turn in an absolute banger of a Christmas song for the special, though.

This is unironically my favorite ongoing film series that hasn't had a single actual release yet. Winnie the Pooh killing after Robin goes to college and forgets about them; Bambi killing after his mom's murdered; the Peter Pan one that just got announced by the same director; and unrelated to the director but in the same vein The Mean One, which is out in 2 weeks about the Grinch trying to murder Cindy
This is unironically my favorite ongoing film series that hasn't had a single actual release yet. Seriously, an entire two hour movie about how much Elon Musk sucks? And it's not even close to my birthday. The mystery was just a bonus at that point.
It was a brilliant mystery, though, and often hilarious. The weird roommate always brought a laugh. My only complaint was that Jessica Henwick's Peg got little to do. I'm assuming that she was intended to be a red herring, or fit the same role as the college girl in the first movie, that even the "nice" rich people won't risk their privilege to do the right thing.
Overall, it's one of my favorite movies of the year. It didn't make me sob for 40 minutes, so EEAAO still takes it. But I have to consider if takes the #2 place from Nope.
You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

Rene Auberjonois is the officer who proposes the tactical strike to rescue Kirk and McCoy from the Prison. He is the only person ever in Star Trek to wear a Starfleet uniform but be addressed as an Army rank. It is very weird. Also a great mustache.

Undiscovered country might be my favorite Star Trek movie.
It is certainly the one I have seen the most.

There's a Jurassic Park marathon on TV at my partner's parents' place and I had forgotten just how much more I like Jurassic Park 3 than The Lost World (at least in movie format, I think the book kinda slaps)
Like, The Lost World movie meanders a lot more, and feels a lot more uncomfortable with having anything to say about the plot or themes of the first installment, where 3 is still messy but at least tries to be about something and is a fair bit shorter and more tightly paced
The Lost World has a couple really dope sequences and the special effects tend to look great, it's also just got very little connective tissue between the good bits and the whole thing suffers a similar kind of late-90s blockbuster bloat that also shows up in like, Roland Emmerich's Godzilla
Also I feel like The Lost World does the raptors kinda dirty (with the exception of the tall grass sequence, which is much shorter than I'd remembered but at least super dope while it's happening), where they are pretty genuinely threatening in 3 any time they're on screen
The worst thing I can say about 3 is that it just kind of ends, and in an extremely early-aughts "ooh rah US marine landing" way to boot. Up to that point it mostly nails a survival horror feel to me, in a way where The Lost World mostly doesn't besides the opening shots of the T Rex attack on the trailer
That said, for all its bloat and goofiness I do think The Lost World is still less actively cynical in its outlook than World was

I watched a good video yesterday that talked about how the raptors in the JW movies are entirely dumb and non-threatening compared to in the JP movies. I've never watched Dominion so it was the first time I'd seen the sequence where Strong Female Character outruns a raptor across some rooftops and god it was embarrassing. The raptors do very much kill a guy on screen in 3, still in the early-middle act but right after using him as bait for an attempted trap - also, I might argue 3 is in some ways its own sideways adaptation of The Lost World's book which also only has five humans in it and does similar stuff with the body count. I agree its pacing is weird and messy, but not for a lack of meaningful tension along the way
The tall grass sequence in Lost World felt surprisingly cartoony, I remembered it feeling really cinematic and impactful the last time I'd seen it almost a decade ago but this time literally the only sequence that felt that way in Lost World was the scene with the trailers on the cliff (and mostly the first half before Eddy shows up), and in fact this time I think I found the whole film weirdly tonally messy in a way I can only compare to a few other late 90s blockbusters I've also revisited recently (Jumanji, Godzilla, Small Soldiers, to name a few that suffer this tonal whiplash and sheen of Clinton-era commercialism)
Overall I think Jurassic Park 2/3 are messy but at least have significant cinematic vision and are not entirely cynical, which is better than I can say for the Worldses
I watched Run Sweetheart Run which HBO max kept pushing on me and I went in blind.
It's kind of half baked and a little cringe but it was ok filler fodder.
The biggest thing I took away from it is the lead Ella Balinska is a nearly 6 ft smoke show who needs to fire her agent.
Her filmography is filled with genre stuff since apparently she's had some sort of martial arts acting training but she seems like a decent actress with a ton of screen presence and could absolutely be a darling of genre movies for years to come if she gets a role that isn't in something bad.
