I remember really liking the ezio games

How do they hold up in 2023?

The gameplay is rough. especially considering they really like to lock basic abilities 90% through the game
I feel like 2 and Revelations were the best for controls though, I had real problems with brotherhood.

As part of my plan to play through (almost all) of the AC series, I've just finished Black Flag.

I managed to fully upgrade my jackdaw, clear every collectible, every side mission, every assassination, the legendary ships, everything.

    I started playing Thursday night.

I think this was my favourite of the "old" AC games.

Anyway, the timeline of what I'm playing through:
    pysw5cd1la3x.png

    Next up is Rogue

I'm not seeing Origins. Should be between Syndicate and Odyssey.

I've played through Origins before. I thought it was okay, and if they let me choose to play either Aya or Bayek it would be on this list, but it's just too long of a game to be locked into Bayek for.

I didn't complete a runthrough of all the Assassin's Creed games, I think because they're...fundamentally pretty similar, and I couldn't make myself play all those similar games in a row. Here's my ranking of the ones I've gotten through:
    1. Odyssey
    2. Brotherhood
    3. Black Flag
    4. 2
    5. 3
    6. Origins
    7. DNF, but: Revelations
    8. DNF, but: Unity
    9. Getting thrown into a haystack and stabbed
    10. Valhalla

I saw the Ezio collection on deep sale for the Switch, something like five bucks, so I grabbed it. I was curious how they adapted AssCreed's kinda-needlessly complex control scheme for a more portable device

Turns out the answer was, "They didn't!" It's the same shit, which made it wildly uncomfortable to play handheld. I ended up uninstalling. Alas!

took longer than it should have, but Masanaga the Spear-Bearer has fallen

Figured out quickly enough that breaking his posture was my best path forward. Found a useful pattern where he's mostly reacting and just kept deflecting. Took a bit to get used to the poison attack, made more annoying because sometimes it's a single and sometimes a double; and sometimes the double is followed-up, but I can almost always interrupt that last, provided I dodged the double correctly.

Did not appreciate his poison counter, which I kept triggering accidentally.

His other, more agile, sequences were a headache. He has some rare-ish jumping knee attack that could kill me instantly and I only guarded or deflected it a couple of times.

    also, a) he didn't carry a spear and b) I want a spear

I haven't played any of the AC's other then Odyssey and Valhalla but I can still agree with this list.

To say I was disappointed in Valhalla drastically undersells my feelings.

EDIT: Oh wait I played 1 & 2 and they were both between those two.

never really played these games but

in the original dead space, isaac was like a classic gordon freeman-style voiceless character, right? never actually speaks, but everyone pretends that he does?

and then from dead space 2 he starts talking, but it's mostly during scripted sequences instead of like... being able to choose options from a dialog wheel

Basically, yeah. There aren't a whole lot of people to actually talk to in Dead Space so the Gordon Freeman thing worked. They went in a more narrative/dialogue heavy direction in the second game so they felt like they needed the character to communicate. I liked both games a lot so I didn't mind the change. Dead Space 2 is still very, very good.

The trailer looks nice, and I'm down to play a pretty/reimagined Dead Space, but I'll wait until after it comes out and I can watch some streams. Watching people play The Callisto Protocol convinced me that I could skip that one.

Is it dead space 3 where things started going wrong? I vaguely remember complaints about microstransactions and crafting, and I guess that was enough to just tank the series as EA started to fall into its games as a service sinkhole

The bones of dead space 3 are pretty good but the tacked on microtransactions and progression are awful.

I still enjoyed playing it (it’s still dead space) but they sure tried everything they could to prevent that.

DS1 is a straight up survival horror game. DS2 is more of a horror/action thriller (Alien/Aliens being an apt comparison, as pointed out above). DS3 is a cooperative, bad Gears of War clone strapped to the gills with microtransactions.

It's actually very similar to the progression of what they did to F.E.A.R., too. Mainstream game publishers became fully allergic to the idea of horror games for awhile there until Amnesia kicked the doors down.

I am excited for voiced Issac in DS1. He did have a personality in the first game, if you read the mission stuff Issac commented in there about what he was after. So really its just them vocalizing what the original team already had in the game.

Plus I just like the Issac voice actor.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

The thing that boils my blood about Dead Space is Visceral Games being forced to make it worse over time at the insistence of EA execs. Then the whole studio being shuttered based on shitty projects chosen for them by, you guessed it, horrible EA execs. And now we have... Dead Space more like the old ones! Ordered for a new team to do, by new EA execs who love the concept now, suddenly. God, they're infuriating.

I'd be surprised if the people who made the original decisions on dead space are still there honestly.

I'm just happy they are investing in dead space, hopefully if this does well and they remake 2, we'll get a new 3. Though I did love the freaky co op in 3, that shit was my jam.

I keep meaning to go back and finish AC Odyssey but the sheer mass of content feels too much. I wish there was a "explore and do conversations" mode. I loved playing as Kassandra but the combat in those kinds of games bores me and there's just so damn much of it.

Odyssey's missions and mini-stories were all structured really well, and made jumping in and out of it really easy. I never hit the point in Odyssey that I did in Origins where I was like, "okay, I'm at the end," and then there was like another seven hours of game left. Everything felt like it was varied while still working towards the same end.

I finally beat the goddam Adra Dragon in Pillars of Eternity.

Backstory: I suck at these games, and I ran into this dragon at level 11. He stomped the hell out of me over and over until I ran away with tails between legs.

At level 15 I came back.
    la22c69gn194.jpg
It came down to the last spell with the main tank dead, most party members incapacitated, and my wizard on critical health desperately throwing everything in his spell book at the dragon shouting PLS GO DOWN GODDAMN YOU JUST DIE and then my last spell killed it.

The only reason my wizard could do that is before the priest went down I threw withdrawal (removes party member from play for a long time, frozen on the spot, is invulnerable but can't do anything) on the backup tank so the dragon couldn't walk past him to get to me. I'll take it!

I had a lot of fun playing Dead Space 3 in co-op. The team designed a decent shooter and the co-op element can instantly elevate a game from okay to great with a good partner. Some of the things they *tried* to do were interesting, with the second player experiencing slightly different scenes because that character had yet to be exposed to the Marker. Good idea! Unfortunately they don't do a whole lot with it and the game's core combat loop of "fight these humanoid dudes with guns and now fight these necromorphed humanoid dudes with different guns" feels creatively bankrupt.

Also I think the DLC continued the story and served as the game's new ending, but it didn't come out on PC (on Origin) until much later? Something like that. I remember being kinda miffed and we didn't go back to play it.
