And so, 5.5 hours in, ends this year's attempt to get into Rain World.

I guess at least I accomplished something this time, I reached a lore objective that changed what the helper is pointing you at, then got stuck in the sewers trying to follow said helper to the next destination. The game remains, as ever, incredibly intriguing to explore and utterly frustrating to actually play.

The combination of incredibly loose controls, fiddly control "states" your character can get stuck in unwittingly (falling a certain distance or tapping down will toggle you intro crouch mode, which is extremely slow, and jumping or falling past a pole will automatically grab), fast&deadly enemies and incredibly specific platforming you're expected to do, all on a timer just compound into a very frustrating "I am repeatedly failing to perform this platforming challenge and watching the timer tick down towards my death is NOT helping" combo.

I'll restart and try again next year.

There's a person in the Gotham OSHA office who is about two weeks from turning into a costumed villain if one more inspector rubber-stamps a noncompliant guardrail.

Turns out their manager has already become The Clock King. So hey, they can probably get a decent referral on their costumed villain resume... unless they were chronically late.

Look, there's loads of people who really, really love that game.

I keep trying to be one of them.

I think Gambit needed to make skin contact with an object to charge it with his power, but he also wanted to be a cool guy who wore gloves so this was his big-brained solution.

Edit: You know, I was about to comment on Gambit not even having those abs if he was shown shirtless, but after googling, I was surprised to see that he actually did:

I finished the Calisto protocol. I'd say the closest thing I can compare it to is the Evil within 1, in that its weird and kind of a mess but it got to a point after a few hours where I was enjoying myself. Its a very flashy 6.5/7 out of 10 game

It feels like all the encounters were designed backwards though, it was significantly more frustrating and difficult in the first 3-4 hours than in was later in the game. Like, those first few hours were designed as if you had learned all the tricks and specifics of the mechanics and could deal with lots of enemies in confined places rather than still building up your arsenal and coming to grips with how everything fits together. I spent a lot of time in those first couple watching Josh Duhamel get ripped up by monster men because I was still trying to figure out the melee combat and getting my ass kicked in 3 or 4 hits because the margin for error is pretty slim.

I was wondering what happened to Steamworld Headhunter, but apparently Thunderful have had multiple games in the works for at least a couple of years and a city builder was mentioned among them, so maybe development has been better for Build.

I want to say it was "Marvel Gambit Shirtless" or something like that. Then clicked the Images tab and scrolled looking for the 90s Animated Series Gambit, and it turned out to be a thumbnail for a video.

The Steamworld Build demo is pretty good.

It took me just under an hour to finish.

Although I did finish it in one sitting, I get a little annoyed when a demo longer than 20 minutes doesn't have saves.

Nah, that's just what the game looks and sounds like.

This is the head of Luminous Productions saying "hey, my team made FFXV. This is the engine they know and after so many years working on that project, I bet we could make something on the cheap using what we learned."

Meanwhile the rest of Square's development studios are like "yo Unreal is actually super easy to work with." Except the division of Creative Business Unit III that's still working on FFXIV. Those folks just shrug like a Flintstone's animal character and mutter whatever the Japanese equivalent of "eh, it's a living" is as they deal with spaghetti code old enough to drive (the first version of FFXIV started development in like 2005).

EDIT: My phone keeps auto correcting XV to XIV because I talk about that game a lot...

the reaction for forspoken is so mixed, i'm not sure what to make of it

to its credit, the moment to moment gameplay looks like it might actually be pretty fun (good movement and combat mechanics can salvage a lot), and i've heard a few reviews mention it improves as the game opens up. but that writing seems truly unfortunate, the tone is so off, visually it seems like a mixed bag, and being an open-world-ass open world game isn't doing a lot to help either. feels very "wait for a sale"

The Polygon review mentions it gets really fun riiiight as you're about to finish the game. Which, unfortunate if true. I wonder if this is another case of developers stripping out too much core stuff in the name of having a progression. At least it doesn't sound like the game has you collecting thousands of equippable items, each with a small chance to give you a minor bonus to some number.

Disco Elysium got way more fun when I just started saving before doing anything and reloading if I didn't like the result

Not even to save scum on rolls, but just because I can't resist clicking all the dialogue options and the game doesn't always reward that. I don't want to deal with the fallout of Harry shitting himself in public because I wanted to hear what the brain voices had to say

Try to open up to the game as a narrative, not just a videogame. Decide how you want to play the protagonist. An extension of what you would do in that situation? Great! A racist? Okay. A guy who sincerely believes in ghosts? Cool.

Then just kind of...go through the game as that character.

My first run I just kind of reacted how I would in real life and got a very upsetting, but accurate ending.

I am in the business of saving lives.
