I was so looking forward to having Bowser as part of the group, but he doesn't seem very useful. It just seems like his default weapon should be doing more damage than it does.

I'm on the third planet right now so I haven't gotten Bowser yet. Maybe he's better once upgraded?

    Not really.

I went all in on his Weapon and Ability upgrades and you don't get an option to increase his weapon damage so its stuck at the default level scaling. His ability, which is to summon up to 5 Mecha Koopas that run around and act like allied Bomb-ombs, to where you can even pick them up and throw them is nice, but even if you upgrade their damage, upgrade their numbers from 3 to 5, and then upgrade them *again* to make them fire damage from plain damage, even if all 5 hit the same enemy its just an "okay" amount of damage that doesn't feel worth the cooldown or the points invested into it.

Now if they don't all immediately detonate on something right after you summon them, they do act like distractions and target dummies for other enemies, so that *is* useful, but if one blows up in range of the others they blow up to so they don't stay around long.

He gets a ground pound on dropping from a team jump, but you can't maximize that if you want to get the most out of his weapon and his mecha-koops, and then put anything into his health so he's not getting 2 shot by bigger enemies later.

Also his ground stomp is kind of bad, since it's going to detonate any barrels or bomb-ombs in the area and does a piddling amount of damage anyway.

His movement is small, he just gets one dash and one jump, his health is surprisingly low for being fucking Bowser, and his weapon damage is less than Marios combined 2 shots even if it does have an AoE component to it.

Oh no, I found the stupid combo.
That little disco-ball Spark, the one that pulls enemies to you, is incredibly busted on Rabbid Mario. At max level it's got something like a 19m range, and any affected enemy will take any available route to get to you. And it buffs weapon attack damage.

So someone uses the damage-up Spark, the one you start with, Rabbid Mario Team Jumps to the geometric center of the map, pops the disco ball and opens up on eight to twelve enemies at once. Still not enough damage? The reflector Spark powers up his fists even more, and Rabbid Luigi and Rabbid Rosalina both have AoE damage buff moves.

This has been taking out "defeat all" maps in one round, and even "survive" maps are a lot easier when they dont have any enemies on them.

My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

I really need to finish the first one. I’m stuck on an annoying boss.

I dunno why but this game just is not holding my attention like the first one did. I loved the first one, but this one for whatever reason just isn't hitting me the same way.

I really don't care for how they segregate new characters into their own dlc and you cant use them in the main game at all

I managed to dodge the 3rd planet 99% bug by doing the secret area as the last possible thing to do even waited until i could kill the giant ooze before i did it.

Extremely late to the party, but while I didn't play the first one, I got the sequel because the reviews said the gameplay and characters were a lot better. I'm enjoying it quite a bit, with my only real complaint being the sheer length of the game and somewhat repetitive missions on each world. I've finished the fifth world's plot, and just need to wrap up its sidequests, then go back to world four for the giant an everything else I missed there before starting the final area.

My favorite combo so far is Luigi on Overwatch, then using Edge to repeatedly dash into the enemy in the same turn. It pretty much one-shots any non-gimmick boss I've fought. Sadly, poor Mario himself seems to be the odd man out when I'm setting up parties. Anything he can do well, it seems like Luigi or Rabbid Luigi can do better.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

Honestly? The first game was balanced way tighter. If you had perfect play, you could pull out on the hardest difficulty with nary a scratch and it really rewarded strategy and planning. While the difficulty options are way more flexible in this one, the balance feels completely messy given the encounter design (there's also so, so many more battles).

I'm honestly a little disappointed in it (I'm only on the third planet but I don't feel much drive to push on).

The inherent unique wow factor of it being something totally new and completely off the wall for the Mario Bros franchise is gone because you've done it all before. I loved the first game to death but after beating this one I never felt compelled to go back for Tower of Doom. I'm sure I'll get to it eventually but it doesn't feel like a must play.

I actually didn't ever adapt to the new movement mechanics very well. I think I preferred the traditional grid based movement of Mario+Rabbids 1 over the more nebulously defined movement-in-a-ring approach of Mario+Rabbids 2.

I finished the game yesterday! Basically got everything done except like 6% of the 5th world, which means the giant boss and probably a few secret items. I overall liked it.
I thought the final boss fight was pretty cool, especially how it features all nine playable characters in the final battle. Though I would really wish you could switch the characters between the three parties. My Mario/Peach/Rabbid Rosalina team was really overpowered, while Luigi/Rabbid Mario/Rabbid Luigi only had one living member by the end of the fight.

My favorite character was probably Rabbid Peach. I started out imagining that Mario found her very existence disgusting, but she won me over pretty quickly. I even like the way she just giddily bounds around while moving.

And I feel like the game's soundtrack doesn't get enough praise. I remember halfway through a fight and realizing "Is this a Yoko Shimamura jam?" And it was! I've been a fan of hers since Legend of Mana.

You know what? Nanowrimo's cancelled on account of the world is stupid.

I know that the Switch is old ass hardware, that was dated when it released. I'm 100% fine with that. But man, playing Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope really shows just how much better Nintendo is at making games for their hardware and how poor Ubisoft handled the game's UI.

As I've mentioned before, my daughter and I are playing MR right now. When I want to play, I have to swap over to my profile. That means relaunching the entire game. The entire process just to start controlling my characters is way too long. Each time I have to see the following:
    • Seizure warning screen
    • Ubisoft Logo screen
    • Engine Logo screen
    • Sparks of Hope screen
    • Ubisoft Account Log-In screen
    • Profile Select screen
    • Game options screen

This is several minutes of wasted time every time I want to play. A lot of these are totally Ubisoft's fault. All of the warnings and logos should be skippable. The Ubisoft Account log-in should have a "don't show me this again" option, but it doesn't because they're awful. Basically, the entire opening UI to gameplay starting experience is terrible and should never have been shipped this way.

During gameplay, opening/closing the map and party screens takes 1-2 seconds each time. It's jarring and slows everything down again. This could be a hardware thing, but I lean toward this being poor coding/UI decisions. If the delay is because the game auto-saves, then just have it save once you go back to the main gameplay. When I want to see a map or adjust a character, that shit should be snappy.

The Orb upgrade UI is a mess as well. When you level up, everyone earns an orb. On that screen you can't use L/R to cycle between characters, meaning another B button press is required to go back to the character select, then A to select them. Another big waste of time.

So yeah, I really enjoy the game, but Ubisoft super dropped the ball with the game's UI and time efficiency.

And Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope complete!

Took me just under 40 hours and I 100% completed the game. Overall it was good, definitely an improvement over the first game especially in terms of combat, but it had some glaring flaws.

The biggest problem I encountered was a lack of variety. All the missions were either defeat enemies, get to a location, or survive. While I'm glad there was no escort missions, the maps and objectives got dull very fast. The levels didn't add enough variety to make them fun and unique.

The second problem was character balance. While each character has some unique stuff, some just are way better than others. Mario Rabbid in particular is probably the best character in the game. He gets a tremendous amount of damage output, has tons of HP, and some of the best abilities in the game (moving after attacking is insane).

The game became virtually the same after about the third world. There, you get the Spark named Glitter that let's you draw enemies to you. Equipping that on Mario Rabbid made the game trivial. 95% of my battles became:

Activate Starburst to give allies +50% damage
Move Mario Rabbid into the enemies
Activate Glitter to draw them all around Mario Rabbid
    Punch them all 5 times
    Profit

Like, that was about my battle experience for the last 15-20 hours of the game. It didn't work on bosses or mega units, but they aren't common.

Overall, the game was fun. Lots of improvements over the first, but it definitely could have used more unique ideas and balance testing. I'd give it a solid 7/10.
