I know there's a ton of stuff you can hack into in Fable. Like the dragon's lair, with dragon...that crashes the game unless you make it run with the AI of the giant wasp boss. I think they also removed all the fences and found out you can run between most areas, just like most of the demos showed.

No fucking question anymore, Wechina is Tails. Tails' icon is in the game, and if you double jump with Wechina, you can fly just like tails.

So in Ristar (final) - there is this odd text string hidden in the source code that never gets used anywhere else. It says "RISTAR is NOT volt" and for years no one knew what the hell it meant

turns out that when Ristar was in development, one of the names it was going under was Volt the Voltage. In fact, that name predates FEEL.

Thus the dev history of ristar through names goes

Volt the Voltage -> Feel -> Ristar -> Dexstar -> Ristar

that's right, Ristar was changed from Ristar to Dexstar and then changed back to Ristar.

Dexstar is just about the worst name ever. Right after Volt the Voltage.

I needed a good reason to replay Phantasy Star IV again. This Sega prototype nerd-splosion provides that very reason. Though, since this just concerns the American version, this isn't so much a "prototype" as it is an early and very rough translation.

All of the following come from a May 30, 1994 pre-release version. The final game did not hit store shelves until February of 1995... As far as I can tell, the May 30 version is almost entirely complete translation-wise and just in need of some major revising. Why on earth did this take so long to come out?

First off: character names. Several names are different. Some are Japanese originals (Rudy), others are slight mistranslations of the originals (Ryre, should be Lyla), and others still are entirely different (Rein).

    ps4char1rudy.pngps4char2ryre.png
    ps4char3hahn.pngps4char4rein.png
    ps4char5pike.png

The whole thing is very rough. Some parts are Engrish-like and others are missing a lot of the characterization and emotion present in the final version. (I'm wondering how Raja and Rika's joke sessions on Dezoris stack up in this version...)

    ps4nothing.png

    Was this in the final?

    ps4rabbits.png

The translation in this version seems to be very literal. The intro:
The long long war from ancient times was finally over.
The winner sacrificed the loser to the heavens.
Four bells tolled. Four torches were lit.
And the world continued for thousands of years...

The Algo solar system, bearing its existence in the heavenly skies...

In the past, within those stars in the system, a brilliant civilization flourished. The people devoted themselves completely to the pursuit of prosperity and pleasure.

But, in a series of disasters the planet's management system, 'Mother Brain,' was destroyed. The result was the destruction of the first planet, 'Parma' entire population. The advanced scientific civilization was lost and the lives of the people declined into poverty.

    A thousand years has passed...

In time a renewed strength and determination emerged among the people to try to make prosperity take root again. Due to cruel circumstances that would not be allowed to happen quite that easily...
The long, long struggle of ancient times finally ended...
The victor sacrificed the vanquished to the heavens.
Four bells tolled. Four torches were lit.
And the world continued for thousands of years...

The Algo solar system, somewhere in space...

Once a brilliant civilization flourished here. The citizens devoted themselves to the art and the sciences, and life was prosperous and good.

Then a series of disasters struck. The system-wide management system, 'Mother Brain,' was destroyed. So was the first planet, Parma. Over 90% of the system's population died, and the advanced technological culture was lost.

Society declined, spiralling downward until at last only a few scattered groups even remembered there were once better times.

    A thousand years passed.

At last, civilization is once more on the rise across the Algo system.
People are once again turning to the thought of an easier life. Old knowledge is being rediscovered.

But just as things look brighter, beyond a threshold long thought closed, a dark and very ancient evil stirs...

    I leave you with this:

In one of the Sonic 2 betas, you can actually outrun Robotnik in the Death Egg Zone. As the person who discovered this said, "that's like a childhood dream right there."

An early version of Streets of Rage 3 has surfaced that has some of the original Bare Knuckle 3 graphics before they were recolored and shat on in the final. Not sure if the difficulty has been fucked with for this one yet.

EDIT: One of the Sonic 3&K betas has a credits medly with samples of most of the zone themes. The version used in the final release only has S&K music. This one was likely cut because it's so damn long (and unfortunately missing that awesome Lava Reef drum solo thing).

I don't know the details (I just heard of this for the first time last night), but a single person pretty much acquired 1000+ prototypes from Sega of America circa 1994-95 all at once for thousands of dollars, patched the raw dumps so that they were playable, and packaged and shared them with the Sonic community.

The only disappointing thing is that the vast majority of the prototypes here span only 1 year of development and only at SOA. This is significant for Sonic games, as almost every major Sonic game between Sonic 2 and Sonic X-Treme were developed under SOA at the Sega Technical Institute, but less so for anything that originated from Japan.

Acquired from Sega for thousands of dollars or from some other party unrelated to them? I'm finding the story of how these prototypes got into this person's hands to be far far more interesting than the prototypes themselves could ever be. Please keep us up to date on that if more details emerge.

Wow, the potential implications of this are nuts.

I wonder if we'll see this getting investigated internally within SEGA? I can't see a company just letting such a massive breach of their security just slide, this is their intellectual property being gutted and inspected in detail after all.

So it's been proven now that Sonic Crackers is a beta of Knuckles Chaotix. Not a test, not a concept, but 100% a very early beta of Chaotix. Early versions of chaotix were built directly off of crackers. Sonic and Tails' level icons appear, and they are selectable. Selecting sonic yields mighty (which proves that sonic became mighty), and selecting tails yields wechina... who uses mighty's palette. In Sonic Crackers, Sonic and Tails shared a palette. Wechina also shares Tails moveset from Sonic Crackers. Sonic Cracker's palette is still in early versions of Knuckles Chaotix, which is the only palette to display Sonic and Tails' icons correctly.

Even though it's always been totally obvious, it's nice to now have proof.
