Darkon

So, I watched Darkon last night.

And I was all

woah

these dudes is all hardcore about this shit

like

woah

you know?

like, I never thought I would see enough larpers get so hardcore about their larp gayness that it would almost look cool

but, I gotta admit, I was a little intrigued

like, when you're watching gay porn just all "ewwwwwww!" but you still get a half-mast because your bone is just all "look dude I know it's wrong but it looks like those dicks are having a good time, fuck you for judging me, okay" and you're just all "but dick, those are gays!"

like, yeah, okay these guys are giant fucking dorks, right? They're running around hitting each other with some damn duct tape and foam rubber swords. Black is slashing, white is piercing, red is fireball or some shit.

but, they got this whole bigass campaign going, and been going on for years. All kinds of politics and shit involved, and hundreds of players. And some of their armor and shit is pretty goddamn well crafted. And I'm thinking, "You know, this ain't so much different then what I do sitting around a table with some buddies, we just ain't running around a park with blackface on speaking gay-ass dark elf languages oh wait that's why it's different."

So, any of you dudes see this movie? Because it's a pretty fun movie. And also, I'm about 90% positive that one of the dudes in it could have been Pony.

Watching those Darkon clips on Youtube makes me cringe though.

I fail to see how if you're having fun doing something, you can at the same time consider it shit.

Of all the nerdy things one can play, LARP is perhaps the most social. You will have people taking their shit too seriously anywhere else, be it an MMO, Tabletop, or even plain football. The trick in any of these activiies is to interact with these people as little as possible.

If you enjoy a perfectly harmless activity, I see no reason to quit enjoying it on the grounds that it is not as socially acceptable as say, throwing a football around.

I was going to LARP with some Germans once. Bought a sword and everything. But then I fell horribly ill and slipped in and out of consciousness for about three or four days and missed the big LARP in the forest. Thankfully.

It's one of those things that seems so appealing on one level but which you'd never actually go through with. Like living on an island Swiss Family Robinson style. Only some people do go through with it.

If you find some larpers near you, you show up with real weapons, and larp-enslave them all and work them to death. They'll play along because they're really into it, then when they realize they're about to actually die, it's too late.

also, anything having to do with larpers must be prefixed by "larp-" because it's not real, but instead much much lamer. Just like things on the intarwebs is prefixed by "e-"

overeating and being a fat, lazy slob can be fun at first but has a lot of negative repercussions on your health
I hear doing cocaine is pretty rad, at first

having seen this movie, and having briefly LARPed in my early 20s, most of these people are almost cripplingly awkward in normal social situations and something like this shit just lets them descend deeper into their fantasies where they're actually someone more important
except at the end of the day, they're not
so yeah, I'd say LARPing is pretty shitty even if you can enjoy aspects of it because being able to socialize normally and healthily with a range of people is a pretty good thing for a wide range of reasons

Well, thats a good point, but like you said, LARPing is mostly a social thing, and not just about whacking dudes into oblivion (which is what I would be into if I ever did this stuff). Avoiding interaction with the Larpers who take it too seriously while Larping would probably be damn near impossible, because I'm just guessing that those would be the majority of them. Doing the larp thang with one of those groups who takes it seriously would be not fun, but the basic idea of pretend fights and the gameplay aspect and all that stuff is potentially fun for me.

see, quite honestly, the reason I dug the movie was because I'm a gaming enthusiast. I am intrigued by new game mechanics, by different ways to look at a game, by new mechanics to introduce to existing games. These guys had a few, like their landmass system and their method of "nationhood". Plus the fact that they were able to amass so many likeminded players on a regular basis - as a dude who loves himself some games, I know full well how hard that can be.

I took away from this movie not the idea that "oh hey putting on some blackface and speaking dork language would be awesome!" but ideas like "okay if you were to take that landmass campaign system and incorporate it into a tabletop game, even one like warhammer, you'd need at least five players to make it work, but you could set up a system of bonuses such as resources and artifacts found through exploration or taken through conquest. You could even allow new players to come in as independent armies who could take small plots of land and then form alliances with nations..." and on and on and on.

Because I'm one of those kinds of dorks.
