Man there is a game of paintball where they do that. It's called like Shatner's 3000 or something like that and William Shatner hosts it. 1500 on 1500 and they have tanks and all kinds of stuff.

I think the most socially-acceptable version of LARP in America is Civil War reenacting.

Some friends of mine are LARPers. I've only known them for a year, but one is heading-up INTERCON this year. They tell me summarized stories of LARPs they've been in and I find that interesting. I expressed interest in maybe watching them sometime, as someone would watch an improv show, but they told me that I wasn't allowed to observe unless I took part.

I was a little disappointed in that. I kind of wanted to see them enact a gathering of 19th century socialite railroad tycoons in the English countryside. I probably would want to sit out the LARP of the Roman orgy, however.

while that is really neat, i was thinking more along the lines of 20 people on one side, 8 on the other. the 8 would be the 'behind enemy lines' team, and would be forced to accomplish some sort of objective, like infiltrating a building and stealing some kind of documents or something, i don't know. but the objective would be in a clear, open area that is not easily defensible at all. on the flip side, there would be a good amount of cover on the approach. the attacking team would have camouflage, ghillie suits, all that sort of thing whilst the defending team would have standard green uniforms. the numbers would obviously be in their side, but that would be half the fun of it.

if i ever become rich, this is what my fortune will be spent on.

You would want Scenario paintball games. Usually last a day or two depending on the scenario.

    Rules

    They get to use these.

My brother-in-law is into Darkon. Has been for years. I've tagged along to a few of the shorter excursions and have personally fought on several occasions with foam weapons. It was actually pretty fun.

Yes, there are some people that take it too seriously. But by and large, the people I met were pretty cool; they were there to have a good time. For them, having a good time apparently involves hitting other people with foam weapons. Eh, whatever; it's no stranger than Kendo if you ask me. Really, think about it. I'm not sure why LARPing gets such bad rap around here.

Ha! Fair enough. I regard D&D with much the same suspicion. On the other hand, I've been known to play MtG now and then, so what the hell do I know?

Tangentially: anyone here played paranoia? I always thought it sounded like good fun.

See, now this is what I've always heard. I've also heard I can depend a great deal on the GM. What say you?

Also, suppose, hypothetically, that I have this friend, right, who is into this nerdy crap... and suppose my friend wanted a recommendation about which version of paranoia he should look into, what would you say? You know, to my friend (not me).

the only way I could picture myself LARPing was if I determined there was some queen or something who was smoking hot or crazy in bed so that I could fuck her by advancing the plot in my favor

I think it was Pk who almost did just that

LARPing sounded really cool when I was a kid. This Tae-Kwan-Do dojo i was in would always do it with black belts only. I waited years to become a black belt and when it happened they stopped doing it.

It was sweet wizards got silly string for spells.

If you can get your hands on the West End Games first edition stuff, then you have found gold and you should treasure it. I have never played any other version, and it does require a pretty quick thinking GM to run a decent game.

    Tell your friend that.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I've been meaning to reply to this for quite a while but never got around to it.

I personally know someone who became involved in Darkon. I met the guy (let's call him Joe) through a CS clan I was in a few years ago. Anyways, he and I became pretty good friends through it and then one day he tells me about how he joined some larping group. I sort of laughed at it, but said "whatever, do what you think is fun". He got really into it and spent less time online, and subsequently, I talked to him less and less.

Well, after a while, I saw him online one day in MSN and just said "What's up?"...

Turns out that this Darkon thing basically took over his life. Hours upon hours invested into it from and thousands of dollars on costume materials and other expenses. The kicker is that this douchebag ends up starting up some sort of LARPing romance with a girl who belonged to it as well who happened to be about 11 years his junior. Apparently, he had been engaged prior to meet this girl and he tried to excuse his infedility by saying that the Darkon character romance was just 'acting out a role'. Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that people involved in this shit have a hard time differentiating between reality and what happens in game and that gameplay takes up more and more of your every day life. Well, I'd say it's pretty fucking true.

Again, sorry about bumping this older thread.
