(SPOILERS) Watchmen is the greatest book ever written

Itt: Watchmen, which I finally read. It is the best book of all time, and almost ruined my week by keeping me up until 5 o clock in the morning to finish it, upon which I had to drag myself online to harass whippy about it. I nearly cried when Rorschach died :(. Fuck Dr Manhattan.

One thing I don't get, what was the relevance of the ship full of artists and scientists being blown up?

It's pretty fucking fantastic. I think it merits at least a few re-reads.

Rorshach wins in the end though.

They were the people who worked on the doomsday devise for Veidt. He killed then them to cover up everything that he did.

Are we talking about the pirate ship story?

The ship being blown up is Veidt offing anyone who would've been able to spill the beans on his plans.

Oh. I thought it might be something like that but I guess I missed it. I wasn't sure why the writer of the black freighter would be on there.

Also man holy shit Watchmen is so good you guys

I thought the ending was interesting because it's difficult to tell whether Adrian was right or not. I was HELLA disappointed in Night Owl for pussying out like a little bitch, and I like to think I'd have gone the Rorschach route and just marched off to force them to kill me. Either way someone should have killed Adrian, because that is some bullshit.

Adrian was wrong and he subconsciously knew it.

One, because he had to ask if what he did was right.

Two, because of his dreams involving a certain pirate ship.

Everyone said it looked super cool and I don't think it does. Rorscach doesn't wear a $300 leather coat, he wears a ratty brown trenchcoat with buttons missing.

    A good point.

I still think the Rorscach and Nite Owl shots could be from their early days back when they teamed-up.

I like the pirate ship analogy for Adrian, because taken to it's best match it means that he was wrong and he knows it. The people the castaway killed could represent the 2 million who died in New York, and if the analogy is taken literally the threat was never actually real. I hope that the purgatorial aspects of the story apply to him, because he deserves to be cast out from humanity and cursed with his guilt, because fuck him.

I spoiled Watchmen for myself back when I was getting into comics and in hindsight i hate myself for it... I hadn't had any plans to buy it but since people kept talking about it I decided to Wiki it.

Since then I've picked up the Absolute edition, and shit I wish I hadn't spoiled it first. But it doesn't make it any less awesome.

Looking forward to the movie, it's shaping up to be quite loyal so fingers crossed it pulls off on that promise.

Me and Whippy are engaged in a somewhat heated debate as to whether or not Dr Manhattan is bullshit. Whippy maintains that since the act had already passed, it was right for Nite Owl and Dr M to stay silent in order to preserve the fragile new peace. I maintain that Dr Manhattan is bullshit. How could he do that to Rorschach? With all his power, was there no other way to solve the fucking problem, seeing as he was obviously so inclined?

How was he "obviously so inclined"? It was made pretty clear that while Dr. M is a dude to whom time has no meaning, he only does that which he knows he will do - he doesn't try to change things "for the better", in fact with his unique outlook on things, he probably does not believe there is such a thing.

By killing Rorschach he proves that he's in some way inclined to try and improve the lot of humanity. If he's really completely unconcerned, why would he do that?

What I mean is that while he's willing to take actions to prevent things, he isn't willing to be THE answer to enormous problems.

Veidt came up with a solution for the increasingly hot cold war, and Rorschach was going to render all his efforts (means justified by the end?) moot, so Manhattan stopped him. But he doesn't use his past self to try and stop Veidt or anything.

I don't even see it as that. His thought processes at that point have become so alien that it's near impossible to judge what he's actually thinking. We only know that he's basically going through the motions of what he think he should do as a hero, a lover, a person, etc.

So do you think that, once it was too late to stop it, it's moral to allow events to take their course, or else it's all for nothing? Should Veidt pay for what he's done?

    1. Dr. Manhattan is God and God can do whatever the fuck pleases him.
    2. That means although Veidt was unable to triumph over him even with his ridiculous trap, Batman could with prep time.
    3. For those of you wondering what it would be like if Dr. Manhattan channeled his abilities to prevent the climax, you might want to check in to Sam Hamm's atrocious scipt, which normally I will not mention and would assault someone just for bringing up.

I think it's hard to say because it is very much a cold war book. I was born when it ended, so I can't imagine what the constant, looming threat of World War III is like. I imagine that to rational, moral people it could have made sense to keep a secret like that in order for global war to be avoided.

    Dr Manhattan is bullshit.

    I can agree with that.

So what would you have done if you were rorschach/nite-owl?

I would probably be paralyzed into indecision and reluctantly come to the conclusion that telling people what happened would only make a terrible situation worse, much like Nite-Owl.

I would not be very happy with myself no matter the decision.

I'd go Rorscach's route. For one thing, I put a lot of value on truth and would rather know an unpleasant truth than a nice lie.

Second, it's the kind of lie that could really fuck with humanity, probably in a long term way.

    Third, fuck Adrian.

Nobody would have believed Rorschach anyway. He was known to be delusional and if, and that's a big if, his journal would have saw print it would have been in a newspaper that was already filled with wild ass conspiracies. Nobody would have believed it.
