@see317: That's a cool idea, but the contest is specifically a reDESIGN, not a reINVENTION... You are supposed to imagine you have just been assigned to the Iron Man series and you have to update the costume, not the character. I'm having a hard time with it because of this - if I could just go crazy with it I could do a steampunk Iron Man but having to actually stay within the constraints of the current character is so much more difficult. Especially because I think the current/movie styled armors are basically perfect... it's hard to come up with something that is definitely new and inventive without going way overboard and compromising the core ideas of the character.
My basic thinking after doing a little research on wikipedia was to make the armor completely embrace the concept of Extremis/nanotech - It's modular, it can morph it's shape and composition (like turning into a jet/wingsuit shape for flight or altering it's coloring or shape fro stealth/camo) and even generate and extrude parts of itself (like making drones or floating active shields or even weapon systems). Basically taking the idea that Iron Man has many armors for specialist purposes but this 'Invincible upgrade' makes one armor that can adjust itself to the task at hand.
Very cool. I really like the sketch detailing of the back of the suit. The exaggerated "hipbones" look a little odd to me though. Interesting in a sculptural way but they sort of suggest awkward movement.

really digging the third picture (the one with the back details).
dunno how i feel about sharkjet-ironman (his silouette looks like a shark for the side view)

Now there is a cool idea for having an exposed/exposable face.Im not sure if its your intent or just me interpreting it different, but having the face plate be essentially an lcd screen displaying the iron man visage. Then when he wants his face visable he just turns it off and its a clear window to his face inside. I would love to see your design muscled up a little. Like if he were designed to go toe to toe with the Hulk.

also, something to take into consideration maybe, is how tony would look with the face mask off/up. Or in your design, would he just have to take the whole helmet off? Just because it seems you are using the Lower Red part of his mask to be his jaw/chin. but if the face mask is up, I'm not sure you'd be able to see anything but his eyes and nose.
13 is pretty neat, and definitely away from anything else I would think about. Looks like the changes are more for aesthetic than practical(streamlined for flying or reinforced for attacks). The curls bring out an eastern vibe. I think it would be a cool What-If or 'elseworlds' type of mask.

Totally solid, MolotovCockatoo! Looking forward to how this turns out.
@DMAC Man, I love how you take the time to really work out the possibilities. I think 12 looks the coolest from the new set.
So I did another design. Since I suck at drawing technology I wanted to force myself to. Which translated to me drawing a whole bunch of segments, ribbing, and holes. I'm kind of mixed on the design, and I'm going to rework his right leg to make the pose better. Gonna rejigger his chest a bit so he has a big horizontal oval on it filled with Kirby Krackle too. Meh.

I'm definitely getting a zone of the enders vibe from one of them, which is thumbs up in my book. I think it's spine armor on the third one that made me think of it.
I wasn't sure if I was going to have the time to put something together for the contest. After playing around with helmet designs for a week or so, I got busy with paying gigs. Anyway, I decided to sketch up the "Iron Mandarin" design tonight. Maybe not the most realistic "next step" for Tony. I could see it in a story where he takes control of the Mandarin's empire...
I had a dozen ideas but unfortunately I let myself get too busy and ran out of time to develop them. I wanted to make sure I submitted something though and this was one that I thought would be interesting to draw.
I have one more concept that I might draw for kicks once I've finished up my current freelance projects.

Maybe something like this without the anime and in red and gold?
Yay Heavy Arms Yay
i like the middle right and bottom right.
the bottom right one's frills need to be sharper rather than curvy i think though.

I immediately thought of Iron Man's personal, phallic helicarrier. I'm not sure what that says about me.
I was thinking about entering this. Here's my initial inked sketch.
I was going for kind of a retro 1950's look.

also, 11 w/o fins is also nice.

I demand this design be used if Iron man ever makes an appearance in Madman.
i reeeally like number 13. that's a bold style change and i think it would be awesome extended to the rest of the suit

I really need to just sit down and do an entry for the contest...
and i love the red/silver way more than the red/gold.
Opposite opinion for me.
If I could draw, I'd do a crotchety old man life support armor.

and yeah, I don't think it'd win the contest because it's not a "real" redesign
are you going with something else?
uhhhh
good luck?
