You paying? It's huge and heavy. :P Plus, why? All it does is serve files and do transcodes. If you really want something I have, there's much easier ways to arrange that. (Not the least of which being just bringing the drives (they're in 4 disk arrays for convienience)

Again, you buying? :P~ $700 (MSRP, but still) for what's basically a 4 drive enclosure that allows me to rely on USB for all my data transfers? Gonna pass on that one. I much prefer the control and safety (and portability, should it come to it) I get from software raid anyway (at the expense of some performance, but oh well).
And I'm still confused as to why I'd need that much space at BYOC anyway (since I admittedly haven't been part of 'the club' previously). Is there a leeching contest? :P
Edit: Now, if you promised me a projector and screen that I could show awesome (according to me) 80s cartoons on, then maybe... :P~

USB? what?
Its a NAS that has hardware raid built into it. The usb ports on it let you plug in external drives to be shared out via the NAS.
I bought mine for $350 via newegg refurbs, added my own drives.
You dont *need* that much space... but some people might like such a contest? :P

I must have overskimmed the description page. And refurb? *shudder* I get enough scary HD failures (recently lost 2 drives in one raid5 array within a week of each other) without relying on refurb equipment. I'm also anal about control, so relying on a magic box to safeguard my stuff wouldn't make me happy.
You've already got me beat on space, hands down. :P I don't think I could fill up as much space as you've claimed even if I tried. My Cartoons folder is only 400G and it's fairly extensive.
As someone who attended the epicness that was PAX2007, I just want to reassure everyone who is thinking about doing BYOC for the first time: they do a GREAT job guarding the area. I left my laptop, snacks, and excess swag at my table, and it was never touched, and I left pretty early at night each day too. It's really nice to have a semi private area in such a public place to dump your stuff!

My laptop was unlocked at the first tabe to the entrance and was not touched. In fact, my PAX booklet was left next to it and the most that was done to that was a little bit of flipping through the schedule pages.
I gotta say it from all the responses in this thread... BYOC != Personal PAX Locker
Dont get a pass to BYOC strictly for that (I had a couple PM's asking me about it...) If you want a place to game/internet and relax from crowds while you do either of those, then the ability to leave stuff in there is a bonus to that.
Personally, I left a pile of cash, hookers and blow at my station last year and when I came back the cash was still there and only 2 of the hookers died (due to the missing blow I presume).
Also, I still have this in my damn garage, should I bring it? :

FYI: This was tried in the past but there may or may not be a casemod contest. Depends if theres enough intrest or not. Hasnt been the past (the last one was 2006 and that didnt have many enter)
I found the BYOC area a great escape from the crowds.. and even enjoyed some of the BYOC scheduled events .. though I didn't actually win any of the darn competitions :
I think the guy that set next me didn't even leave the BYOC for most of PAX
think he thought it was a LAN party with side shows .... though he was playing WoW on a 10 day account most of the time LOL
my plan is to be back there again this year.. given I get in.. hopefully with a friend or 2 in tow
1. Is booze allowed at BYOC? Or, for that matter, is drunken (but harmless) belligerence?
2. Are there any specific guidelines regarding *ahem* filesharing, or is a blind eye turned?
I'm looking forward to the event, I should have my new LAN machine built by then -- just a side note to the curious, Shuttle barebones systems are great, I've had superb luck with them.

No booze at pax at all, no belligerance either (in game is allowed, none IRL).
Roudy people + thousands of dollars of computer equipment = bad
No sharing of porn.
Shuttles are indeed awesome, except I cant fit 10TB of hdd space into them :P

WHAT?! No sharing porn? But I have 16.1 Gb that I was going to upload to a shared folder for everyone!
I'm coming in from canada, will there be any issues with border security and bringing 1500$ worth of electronics into and from the states?
I really don't feel like paying some outrageous import tax
Like Big Red said, if you drive, you'll be fine. People take their computers across the border all the time for business - just tell the border guard you're going to a gaming convention if they ask you about it specifically.

What he said. Also, if I'm not mistaken, the border guards see quite a number of people driving across the border for PAX. so it wouldn't be surprising if they already know about PAX by the time you hit the border.

Sooo, what I am doing. I am going to transfer all my innards of my current beast and stuff em in a bare bones Shuttle. They count as carry-on!
Last year I was quite pleased with everyone's honesty. I felt a real kinship with all the attendees, and so I irrationally decided to leave my laptop and snacks behind both nights. NOTHING was disturbed. I found my unlocked laptop, nilla wafers, and coke cans waiting for me each day, just as I left them.

You just spoke the magic words.... But now you know who to blame if they go missing.

We love to see this. We want very badly to be able to tell people that it's cool, this is pax, we're all awesome people, you don't need to lock up your laptops/nilla wafers.
And there's about a 99.9% chance that you'd be perfectly safe with an unlocked laptop/nilla wafers. In addition to the fact that pax tends to draw a super-cool audience, we also work very hard to try and keep things safe and secure.
But, alas, it doesn't matter how many crazy awesome people you have at a convention, if there's just one nasty jerk, he can ruin things for everyone. So please, do everyone a favor and lock up your laptops/nilla wafers. We don't want to hear about stolen laptops/nilla wafers any more than you want your laptops/nilla wafers stolen.
I apologize for this incredibly stupid question, but I am going to be brand new to both pax AND a BYOC lan like this. If I get a spot for the BYOC, I don't need to commit to being in there the whole time, right? Just when I feel like relaxing and playing some games with people?

I'm pretty sure you can enter/leave the BYOC area whenever, as long as you're signed up -- the computers are kept under watch if you decide to leave (though there are recommended security precautions mentioned earlier in this thread).

Correct. Come and go as you please. 90% of everyone who gets a BYOC spot always leaves to go see expo, a pannel, play in a tourney, or whatever.

Well, it is considered slightly rude to get to the BYOC by breaking into the WSCTC after PAX is done for the day, but beside that, you're free to be there for as little or as long as you want.

bring a bunch of externals then? :P
