By the way, you could have gotten involved in the fighting. The sphere things that spawn them spawn an enemy per player, whenever I got close to them it would spawn something Level 10 or 11.

Yea i found one and it spawned a lvl 10 +++ guy to my level 8 who can't hit shit.

God I want to start getting points into Martial Arts already. Leveling seems so fucking slow. Just grinding Merv missions over and over and over.

One thing i like about the skill system is once you buy some skills it seems you can fairly easily load up a different skill set. Might cost a alot when your into the Master stuff but still, its feasible.

    On a side note:

I can understand why this game never took off. When I alt tab i some times loose sound effects and can't get them back unless i logout and if i log out mid mission i gotta restart it. I get tons of graphic bugs thanks to me not using an ATI card.

Add to the list the slow xp curve. Level 9 to 10 is taking for fucking ever, and thats doing archived story line missions for the merv. This is nuts. SOE understands its choking the game right? Right? Level 1 - 10 should be a few hours. Not a day.

    My Matrix Online Review:

    Graphics:

Pretty basic stuff in this game. I run the game at max settings on a Geforce 8800GTS with a Quad 2.6ghz processor and there is no such thing as graphical lag. Thats mostly because this game is not very taxing graphically. Buildings all look the same, inside and out. Some of the stuff seen in the movie like heavy rain drops when it rains and pigeons show up ever now and then to break up the enviroment. Over all the looks are not hugely impressive but seeing as your playing MXO you are not here for the pretties.

Warning: The game either hates Vista, or Nvidia. I get tons of graphic bugs. Wire mesh instead of textures, random blobs covering everything.

    Combat:

Wow. MXO takes a giant shit on every MMO out there in terms of combat. Your auto attack depends on what stance your in, speed, power, or grab for the basics. Speed is fast strikes, mix of punch and kick. Power is slower, but the same strikes as speed. Grab is all about throwing guys, trips and counter kicks but it seems to be the slowest in killing enemy's. I think the combat is designed around the player changing their stance repeatedly during combat to counter the AI. As for actual attack skills, well things tend to vary. As a melee guy at level 9 I have four attacks. Two are on a short cool down timer, and two require the enemy to be in a disoriented state. The latter two hardly ever get used as most fights I don't get the enemy staggered or anything like that so I generally just spam the first two. Well spam isn't the right word. Abilities and attacks use Inner Strength (IS) and you do not have a lot of it. You can regain IS in combat by going into a block stance in which you try to block all attacks while regaining IS every few seconds.

The down sides of combat are pretty harsh in my eyes though. To initiate combat you have to "interlock" with an enemy. Slightly cumbersome - either double click an enemy or right click and click combat. Your standard shoot'em enemy's are fine for getting into fights. It's the "casters" that are just silly to fight. They can resist combat interlock over and over. A lot of the missions I am now doing at the level 9 range there are multiple enemy's at the same times and nearly every time at least two are casters which can heal. I'll take down the shoot'em up guy no problem but then the casters become a massive pain in the ass. If you cant get into combat after a short while you will have to run. When you do get into combat your rotating between using your "Health Pills", high damage attacks, block to regain IS that you burnt through and switching between combat stances in hope that you will land some hits and kill at least one enemy. Needless to say after the last few missions having to do the same thing I'm now typing this while taking a break.

    Missions/Quests:

KAPOW! Thats the sound of MXO taking a 12 gauge double aught buck shot right in the face. Ever play City of Heroes/Villians? Imagine that but in non instances. Every building looks the exact same, every mission is the exact same. Kill someone, protect/escort someone or retrieve an item from a safe. I really have nothing good to say about Missions. They're terrible, and they're all the same and your grinding them over and over for xp. Oh boy, next section!

    XP:

Dear god, what in the name of hell!? So I am level 9, a fairly low level where you don't really experience a lot of the amazing fun that is MXO combat. Your one goal is to get more xp so you can advance your skills. Your obstacle is a slow xp curve the likes of which I have not seen since Lineage 2. To make matters worse if you just came from playing say, CoH you're about to go insane. The only thing to get decent xp from is the missions that are bland and boring. I didn't say a lot of xp though. Some people may say I am over exaggerating, I'll call them liars. I've been running Archived missions (Old story line stuff that you can't do again cause some of the characters in it are uh, dead) which give about 20,000 more xp then regular missions. I've been doing them since 10am. I stopped playing at 1:15pm and I am still at the same level, running the missions over and over. Over three hours to go through level 9. Jebus cripes.

    Over all:

    Graphics: 6/10
    Combat: 9/10
Missions :2/10 (I've done one single mission I thought was good. One.)
    XP Curve: 0/10

    Conclusion:

If you liked the Matrix and you think you would enjoy the swoosh woosh wire style combat then you should try the trial. If you don't like games that are repetitive with slow xp curve then you should still try the trial just so you can watch level 50 people throw down some GunFu and Akido. Honestly, its fun a hell watching level 50's that are pvp flagged throw down. The "caster" type people are boring as shit to watch, its the firearms and martial art guys that are amazing. Its all right out of the movie.

You do realize this is an older MMO and a SoE game at that. It was made in the time of grind heavy MMOs. The xp curve reflects that. And it also has a snowball effect, the higher up you get the more xp you get in relation to kills.

I got this game on launch day, and it was actually pretty awesome back in it's heyday.

I remember doing a lot of fun missions with my friend at the time, knowing kung-fu, and hanging out with a bunch of awesome roleplayers and GMs at an awesome nightclub.

And my sunglasses were fly. Too bad it was also really laggy and inundated with bugs.

I played this a long time ago, and as soon as I joined up a really high level guy took me to his party, and said
    "Watch this."

I followed him to a building, stood by the door, and then I leveled like six times as he turned in a quest.

Is that still in the game, or are there like level limits to grouping now?

Hah, I miss this game. I created my first character, TerriSchiavo (later forcibly renamed by GMs to Kontract), right when the game went from beta to release. Rolled a Kung Fu/Dual Submachine Gun expert - the combo was great for range-rooting people, then quickly closing in and crippling them with Kung Fu's many disabling moves. I could easily take on and defeat people five levels above me, had top kills on the server, and I'm pretty sure I'm the first player to get whiteroomed for grief complaints, heh. I really should try it out again.

You actually did the mission grind to get to lvl 50?

My dude is 12 right now, still working towards 15 when Martial Arts Initiate will be done so I can get into Kung Fu. Thought I have not make a 100% choice. Kung fu looks like fun, Karate looks like some serious head bashing and Akido looks like throwing people.

Right now there is an event going on. Smith program is invading so you can beat up Smithlings, and turn in there loots for special stuff. I can't kill my Smithlings though. There are always 3 of them, 1 level above me and always ++. I burn through what little health pills I have taking them down cause they do 50+dmg a hit. I would buy more health pills (at least 2.0, preferably 3.0) off the market but people are selling stacks of 2.0 for like 1.5m influence. That'd bankrupt me! D:D:

Also, GHSC front man griefing people? How absurd! :p

Ah. You gotta run away some times. When I walk into some missions there might be four people in the very first room for some silly reason. If any of them are hacker/virologists/balistas or generally someone I cannot engage in melee at will I will only be able to kill one or two people before I have to run away. Make sure you leave yourself enough health to break combat, then run into the elevator or just outside the mission area and wait for regen. Then go back in and do it again.

IMPORTANT: When your running missions, clear the room then run your mouse cursor over every item to see if it has loots in it. Desks, paintings on walls, filing cabinets, cardboard boxes. Your supply of health pills will come from these hidden loots. Be thorough.

Another IMPORTANT: When you get to the level 10+ and you cannot find the skills you want on the vendors in Richmond take the Blue Line subway to International and check a vendor there close to the Subway line. I'm working through Martial Arts Initiate right now and I have to go there to buy my skills now.

I found it helpful to keep my simulacrum up in situatuons like that, , if only to keep one or two of them distracted. Of course, its only happened a couple of times, and most of them were a level below me I think.

    Syntax.

I spent the cash and trained over from Kung Fu basics to Akido a few minutes ago. I kind of like Akido. No where near as many balls to the walls face breaking abilities as Kung fu or Karate, but fighting in Grab and dropping Guard Breaker on people is pretty fun.

I do enjoy the ease of skill switching in this game. It just costs a small bit of cash.

    I'm on the Syntax server.

I was a Matrix fan (at least for the first movie) and I heard this game was garbage when it came out. It didn't help that the Matrix wave was long over due to two horrible sequels and a few bad games. But, after loading this up yesterday, I have to say that this game is pretty damn fun.

I stayed away before due to the message that it was all about grinding, and although there is some grinding involved, it doesn't seem to be grinding for the sake of grinding alone. I'm on level 9 and I'm progressing ok. It'll probably take me three hours to get through this level, and that's not power leveling or anything.

Prior to this, my only MMO experiences were SWG and AO. I'm really digging this game.

One of the big things that has kept me from deleting this game is the combat. If other MMO's could wake up and put auto attack combo's in and scripted blocking like this I would be in heaven.

I'd be up for a crew, since there's only about a half-dozen of us playing with any regularity. The only problem is we'd all have to work for the same Organization, since you can't join a crew w/o positive rep with its affiliated Organization.
