I started reading DC comics in the middle of Infinite Crisis and I'm pretty sure I know more about them than most people here.

I can second this. JLU got me into buying "mainstream" comics and I started on IC. A little reading comics, a little forums, a little wikipedia and it's all good.
Scans_daily is also useful, because some really interesting shit often gets brought up there.
There are some pretty stupid people on scans daily though.
But yeah, it's not that hard to get into DC. Really the biggest hurdle right now is there isn't a whole lot of depth to the line, they just aren't putting out that many high quality books.
And even that probably makes it easier, since that means there's less you need to pay attention to.

When I was a kid, I knew who Barry Allen was but I can't recall ever being interested in him. When I started to read comics (circa 1987 when I was 5), Wally was the Flash. Up until know, that's who the Flash has been for me, so I can't say I'm excited. I guess it's the new Kyle/Hal wars for the new generation but in reverse?

Like I said, that might be intentional. Can you think of a greater hyper-masculine menace for the premier female superhero to face than the dudes from 300, especially if the writing style hearkens back to Frank Miller's work?
Gail's always complained about how comics is sort of a boys' club too, so this could be a way to confront that displeasure as well by channeling and defeating the specter of comics' foremost faux-macho force, Frank Miller.
