Getting Descent to run on my pc

I got descent from that free game from Goozex offer thingy.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_%28computer_game%29
It's the cd-rom version. Some of executables (is that what you call them, I dunno) work from the disc, but none from the copy I made on my hard drive. The game will play, but there is no sound and it runs superfast.
The extent of my knowledge is to use Dosbox for stuff like this, but their wiki says that Descent isn't compatible.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Descent source code (as well as the source code to Descent II) was released a while back and you all know what that means: somebody cleaned it up and upgraded it to work on modern fucking computers.

You may find what appears to be the only currently maintained source port here:

Also, if you have a DS homebrew device, some intrepid coders have ported it to that platform as well. It hasn't gotten an update in almost a year but that's okay because the latest version was pretty stable:

Thanks a bunch Daedalus. I'll see if I can get that to work...

Doesn't work. I have opengl and I used the patch that site links to, but when I try to start it the screen resolution changes and it freezes. I think the problem is that the game isn't actually installed on my computer, so the patch doesn't work. I think. There's an INSTALL file but trying to run it, both on the disc and on my pc, gets nothing.

You would need to run the install file from within DOSBox, I would think, but try his stuff

What's the command to run an application? None of the intros mention it, or at least I cant find it.
edit: I found the command, but loadhigh install gives me the message
Error: no cd-rom driver detected. Unable to continue with install.
