What the fuck is going on in that first panel? Is Ironman an octopus or something? I've stared at that picture for a good 10 minutes now and I still don't get how it's possible.

Basically Tony is fighting the Mandarin. Tony first shoots off Mandarin's fingers thinking that's where the rings are, however they're in his back fused to his spine. Then the Mandarin gets him in a headlock of sorts while Tony realizes that the rings are in his back, so he reaches around, slips his finger through and proceeds to rip them out. Reading it the first time I actually said "Holy shit" out loud. It was awesome.

I liked that bit, but personally I found the part with Cap and Nick Fury joking around about it later on much funnier.

Also, the fight between Cap and the alien is pretty good.

how is he removing the rings?

a ring just appears on his finger with no visible damage to the flesh, then all of a sudden all of the rings are on his finger and there's an obscured blood splatter.

He fucking rips them off of Mandarin's back by sliding his finger down the holes and then yanking up.

Are they already sticking out of his back, like little round horizontally-oriented Godzilla spines, or are they actually embedded in his spine, like they're sharing real estate with vertebrae?

ok upon further inspection you can see the visible ring is only sticking out partially and there's a definition of another one below it covered by wife beater.

that's some pretty amazing stretching tony did to rip them out if they're all spaced out like the first two.

Ok so the ring setup was shown in an earlier issue, like a few before the whole World War Hulk(issue #17) thing started. Some guys found Mandarin in a jail in China, broke him out and he embedded the rings into his spine.

    Wikipedia:
The Mandarin has been revived in the current arc of Iron Man. Apparently he has been in a prison in central China for some time. In this story it has been revealed that he has lost his hands (most likely the hands that were sent to Temugin were, in fact, actually the Mandarin's). He has also been living with no food or water for years. His ability to survive so long without food or water is likely due to his mastery of chi. Despite being handless and starved, he was able to kill several men armed with guns via his mastery of the martial arts. His rings have been returned to him, and it has been suggested Temugin has died. His rings are being re-assimilated into his body by heating them and burning them into his spine.

Dude, guys. Mandarin has a telekinesis ring.

I'm going with that, because it would make things awesome if the ring was all "Duh, I'm a ring fingers get priority!"

Also, countering the Cap Panel, someone has to post the Nextwave "Do you think this E on my shirt stands for 'America'?" panel.

Well, the downside is that the Mandarin has been shown to have a mental connection w/ the rings, so they're not going to rebel against him, I don't think.

This is probably the most important series of panels in the Green Lantern mythology:

Sorry for the image's hugeness, but trying to shrink it down makes it pretty unreadable. The text is really what's important.
