That guy I attacked last night has retaliated, looks like he emptied his cities:
    Enemy attacks

    *
Attack on Golgotha Fadenkreuz (Duration: 1D 6h)

    *
    2h 07m 17s
78 units from Brewhaha are on their way to Golgotha
    *
    2h 26m 49s
6 units from FTW are on their way to Golgotha
    *
    4h 05m 38s
47 units from WTF are on their way to Golgotha
    *
    8h 22m 18s
90 units from Brewhaha are on their way to block the port of Golgotha

    *
    11h 05m 06s
14 units from WTF are on their way to block the port of Golgotha

Also, if I'm reading this correctly, his ships arrive after his troops.

FYI, I've been pillaging Akira's city Ashelia @ 25:21 for gold (nearly 16K per hit)
He's been gone for nearly 2 weeks now, and the city is going to poof in a few days, so I suggest everyone steal from the missing to feed themselves!

I think his other cities have ships in harbour, so this is the only open one...zero military now.

Hmm so I might have made a boo boo, one of the guys on my island apparently has a level 15 main village, I really need to learn how to check someones entire village set. This could be bad....

On happier topics: wine or marble as second colony?

Alright, guess I'll get that colony on the way before his army that "is on its way to destroy" me arrives, hoping that he didn't send war ships and if I have a ram ship it'll turn them about.

It will tell you if it's ships coming to blockade or if it's armies. And 1 ram ship will turn away an infinite number of ground troops.

I would have said marble for second and wine for third; you'll need marble to build up that second colony, as well as for the next level of Palace.

Well the wine island is at: 92,36 and closest marble with a preferable god is: 88,33

I should go for islands that are crowded correct?

First choice is an island with one or more other PA people on it. Next is an island that is crowded, but with mostly > level 6 towns. If it is crowded with noobs, not necessarily a good thing. If you check the page source from the island view, you can see the level of the sawmill and the luxury node; higher level is better.

I had planned to do this as well, and I made my second colony on an Ares island. Then I found out it costs double upkeep to station troops in another city, even your own.

But you can do this by going to the island view of the town you want to send troops to, then switching the pulldown menu to the town you want to send troops from, highlighting your town, and click Deploy Troops or Deploy Fleet.

Pretty sure this is incorrect. On the Delta server I have 42 Phalanges in my capital of which 2 were produced in the capital and all the rest came from my 1st colony which has an upkeep of 685...which I'm pretty sure is not double the upkeep of 40 slingers let alone 40 phalanges. And my capitals upkeep is only 752 which is also not double the upkeep.

The upkeep is doubled in transit, it goes back to normal once they arrive at any city. At least, this is my current understanding. Several people have posted the other interpretation on the boards, and some things mention that troops need to be in their "Home city", for instance in order to initiate vacation mode. I take this to mean "one of your colonies", so that units cannot be occupying or stationed in a military ally's city (if those were even implemented).

But upkeep is shared across all your cities; each pays a percent based on its portion of your total population.

As it's impossible to tell what a specific unit's home city is, it'd basically make vacation mode impossible if you've ever transferred a unit based on that interpretation.
