i'm looking into getting one, but don't know what to look for or what is important. when it comes to response time, contrast ratios, brightness, and all that stuff, what are the minimums i should be looking at? what brands should be avoided and what are the best right now? i want something in the 20-23 inch range, and can spend up to $800 (though the less the better).

Make sure your videocard has DVI out, rather than VGA. It doesn't make much sense to get a brand new LCD that you can't even take full advantage of.

I did see a neat sceptre 22inch with 1200 to 1 contrast on newegg. I don't know though. Those other prices are local since I'd like to walk up and just buy it on the spot.

I'd like the samsung 22incher but that sceptre one sounds really hot too with an hdmi port. I have a friend who bought the 225bw and he loves it for his mac.
I've heard great reviews about that acer 22 inch, and I think the only thing I would like better than that is their 24 inch model:

GREAT contrast ratio and view angles, as well as a supposed crisp and clear image. If I won the lottery, I would be all over two of those bad boys...

It uses a P-MVA matrix so it isn't as fast as S-IPS monitors with the worst response being in the darkest tones. The reviews I read though suggest that this isn't really a problem when playing games...

The 20" NEC LCD20WGX2 is supposed to be pretty good too, it uses an "overdriven" S-IPS matrix that lowers the response time to fast TN-F matrices, but at the same time offers much better viewing angles and colour reproduction. I think it uses some glossy overlay though, which might be irritating if you have light sources opposite where you'll be using it; OTOH it's supposed to make the picture look nicer.
It's rather expensive in the US though, in fact I have trouble finding it, and the only froogle result places it at $650. Newegg has the 20WMGX2, but I'm not sure what the differences are, apart from the TV tuner in the "M" version.

getting a 19" LCD with 5ms or less seems to be the cheapest and smartest idea as I already have a 19" monitor so they would match, but part of me wants a "bigger" 20.1 or 22" screen, potentially replacing my need for an HDTV in the near future.
I have an all in wonder X800 puttering along in my box so I know I have the output potential, something tells me the extra 2 inches wide IS worth it.
I would say height+wide makes it that much more valuable imho. some of these 19inch widescreens seem kinda dinky, but the 20, 21,22 inchers seem that much bigger because of the ratio.

I heard there might be some issues with that sceptre 22inch gamer monitor. Costco has a better price then newegg but the costco person told me they are getting 7 units and then returning those 7 units back, so they are phasing them out for some reason or another.
Everyones out of the 225bw and the acers are eliminated only because the older models don't do HDCP.
