I've filled up my mac mini and I'm planning on getting an external hard drive. My main criteria is that it must be quiet. I'm looking for 200 GB and above for $300 or less. Nice form factor (i.e. portable and rugged) also appealing. Anybody bought one recently?

Go to Newegg. Buy a hard drive in your price range (read reviews to hear about noise levels). Then buy an external enclosure for it that you like. Put it together yourself (a thousand times easier than assembling a computer), and you're good to go.

If you don't want to go that route, then I highly suggest the Western Digital MyBooks. I have a friend who has 5 of them lined up on her desk, and they do look sleek.

http://www.ncix.com occasionally sells harddrive/enclosure packages, recently around the 200-500GB range, but they have enclosures and harddrives available seperately as well.

Fry's Electronics always has great deals -> www.outpost.com

In regards to HHD enclosures, I'd recommend anything from Vantec (they are very reliable and come in different flavors) -> http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4416686?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

For HHDs, go with a Maxtor or Seagate. -> http://shop.hdnw.com/product.aspx?n=HD-400S05

Thanks for the replies. I think I over budgeted; you can get the 500GB WD mybook for just $200. Since I'm not really looking for that much space, I'm going to shop around for even smaller sizes and more features.

Are there any enclosures or enclosure+HDD packages that comes with a battery and may be charged through the USB port? Or at least, doesn't require a power supply for the external hard drive itself? What about hard drives with firewire connections? WD mybook only has USB. Sleek and small as possible...

I'm currently leaning towards the WD Mybook, and I'll consider this topic solved if I can't find anything with those features I'm looking for.

(p.s. anyway to get the google software off the Mybook?)

edit: Is this Iomega product worth it?

Something like this may be a bit overkill, but it may also fit your bill.

Regardless, those guys tend to cater to Mac users, so they have lots of Firewire drives. Their "mobile" selection is a little lacking, but their desktop drives are quite plentiful. Their prices tend to be a bit on the high side, but they may be what you're looking for.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?
