I am considering making Phallanoia a "Buy your roles" Phalla, has there been one of these before, and how was it received?
Check out Ardor and Drez's Phallout, it will be your closest comparison point. The ability to customize your role was received quite well overall, though for the game hosts, I believe it was quite a lot of work to maintain.

I have a few ideas for miniphallas to whet my whistle in phallamaking for my big one in about 5 years.
Would anyone be opposed to me running one maybe next phalla? I mean other than the people signed up for phallas, are there any minis planned as of now?
Alright, as I've started to work on this I've realized that while my B5 idea is totally and completley rad it is also super complex and probably not the best to be the first Phalla I've run by myself.
so lets put that on the backburner and I'm gonna change my theme to Veronica Mars
I also thought the point of the Minis was to be small so they didn't distract from the greater player pool for the main games. Having them not start until a few days into the main, after people have died, and making sure they are finished quickly also accomplishes this, but I was pretty sure the main idea behind the whole idea of Mini Phallas was to be small for testing of mechanics/ideas and to keep the early victims entertained while waiting another week or two for the next main Phalla.
As massive as the queue is, I'm tempted to someday run a Phalla based off psychics. It'd be a seer-heavy scenario, possibly with three rather than two teams, but there are some specials that don't know they're specials, other specials that are turncoats, and seer abilities that aren't infallible. I was thinking the vast majority of seers would have an 80% success rate, meaning there's no guarantee that they don't get fed duff information, and half the time they'd get blocked by anti-seer specials.
Oh, and the usual gamut of weird win conditions. Death cultists who need to get their own team killed and other weird shit.
Basically an old friend of mine ran something similar at college and it was less "Mafia" than "Magical Serial Killer Insanity HE'S NOT ONE OF US" awesomeness.

He was banned for a while for violating some of the rules and trying to get others to break the rules as well, then he went posting with an alt to dodge his ban.
We don't take kindly of that here at PA.

This number keeps creeping upwards. When mini-phallas were first approved they were 20 players max.

A mini should shoot for 4 days, and no more than 6. That's the scale of a mini, not the playerbase.
