I've been trying to find the best mech games for consoles. I searched current threads, and the only one on mech games, is for older PC games. I'll start the list small with what i know, and I'll update with suggestions.

Just added those two to the list. Realistically, i don't think I'll get my hands on Steel Battalion. Also RAD doesn't seem to have been released here in Europe, but i have an American PS2, so perhaps this could be a good import?

Also does anybody remember a good mech game on the Dreamcast? i vaguely remember playing the demo for it a long time ago, but I've completely forgotten the name.

    I'd like to throw

into the ring as well. The escort missions were frustrating but they did a great job of translating the Veritech modes into the game.

Would you like to buy Steel Battalion? I have it but I'm not going to have the space for all that shit when I move, and it doesn't get played often enough to justify keeping.

Gungriffon Blaze on the PS2 and Gungriffon: Allied Strike on the XBox deserve mention. Blaze is an earlier title that's pretty arcade-like in its action, while Allied Strike actually mimics Steel Battalion in it's mission structure. But both of them feature higher speed mechs that can skate along the ground as well as fly for short periods of time.

There's also plenty of Gundam games to choose from on the PS2, with Gundam vs Z Gundam being the best on the PS2 for straight-up action, while Zeonic Front is a good (if really, really difficult and frustrating at times) strategy game. Encounters in Space is pretty good as well, but doesn't control as well. The Dreamcast also had Gundam Side Story 0079, one of the best (if really short) Gundam games out there.

If you're also not adverse to importing, the Another Century Episode series that was only released in Japan is similar to Zone of the Enders and really awesome. It's basically a mash-up of mecha from a bunch of different series, so you can have the Gundam X fighting along side the VF-1. There were 3 released, and the second and third are both really good (stay away from the first, it had an awful control setup), though you really only need to get the third.

    Ah yeah, thats the one.

I seem to remember it had some kind of bizarre subtitle, too.

For my money, the first Front Mission will always be the best. I actually played through the SFC version back in the day, despite not being able to understand a damn lick of the story. Had to make it up as I went along. Hit up a translation FAQ a few years later to find that I actually had most of it pretty accurate.

What a great game. Fully deserves a place alongside CT and FF6 in the squaresoft SNES hall of fame.

Has anyone mentioned Metal Wolf Chaos yet? It was apparently quite good. You played as the president of the US, who had somehow ended up piloting a huge mech and had take on the alien/terrorist invasion yourself.

Since for some godforsaken fucking reason the game is a Japan Xbox exclusive its pretty much guaranteed that only reviewers, the developers and their family ever played it.

[edit]ack, beaten hard, and with a video!

If you're trying to find the best mecha consoles games, any Armored Core on PS2 sure as heck shouldn't be on the list. From Software constantly did their best to ensure that only insanely sicophantic Japanese tournament addicts could possibly enjoy the game for an entire decade. The final game on PS2, Armored Core Last Raven was best described by an acquaintance of mine as, "a game made of Satan".

The ones on PS1 were fairly fun, if clunky, and Armored Core 4 went a long ways toward rembering that. Too bad For Answer seems like they started listening to the obnoxious (and loud) J-tourney crowd again,

Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram. It's good. I just wish I could get the Dreamcast twin-sticks for it, then it'd be even better.

There was also a Virtual On game released for the PS2 in the US, Marz, but it sucks. It's kinda neat that it has a singleplayer campaign, but not only is the game painfully slow-paced (as in, the mechs feel like they've been dipped in molasses), but the translators decided that doing all that hard work to translate the information database that covered everything in the Virtual On universe was too difficult, so they just took it out.

I've actually been really interested in getting 4, unlike a lot of the other mecha games I've been looking at, its actually easy to pick up. I've tried the demo, at first i didn't like it, but I give it another shot and I'm starting to enjoy it more. But with the customization stripped out in the demo, i couldn't make a solid judgment.

Well if Front Mission 3 is on there, then why not Front Mission 4. I liked 4 a bit better than 3, except for this damn escort type mission near the near, where i had to guide these shitty Wanzers back to my awesome souped up Wanzers, but they suck so bad they die easily and when they die it's game over. So damn annoying.

Well, I just got finished with Xenogears, but I wouldn't really include that in this list. Maybe Vanguard Bandits, but that game wasn't really all that great.

What? I didn't play Lone Wolf, but the first MechAssault was awesome. Some of the best times on my XBox were spent playing against people online in MechAssault when XBox Live first came out. The single player wasn't anything spectacular, but it was still fun - certainly nothing close to "terrible". With the online portion, it became an incredible game.

Most people bitching about Mech Assault seem to think it was meant to be a mech sim. The difference between Mechwarrior and Mech Assault is pretty much the same as the difference between X-Wing/TIE Fighter and Rogue Squadron. I don't recall people bitching about Rogue Squadron being a really shitty game because it wasn't a sim, but that gets applied to Mech Assault all the fucking time.
