Jailing and BBCode

OhioOhio Registered User regular
Those who are jailed cannot use BBCode. They cannot quote other people appropriately. For a good example, see Evander's and Rohaq's first couple posts on page 70 of the Emplyee Lounge in G&T.

I understand part of the punishment of being jailed is not being able to use BBCode, but trying to read a post with several quotes in it is really hard.

This is more like a punishment for those trying to read it.

Can something be done about this?

I'd suggest enabling quotes, but only if we also increased the post timer to offset the increased convenience.

That sounds like a good idea. I guess I can see how disabling quotes for those in jail sucks for them, but it sucks equally for anyone trying to read what they're quoting, too.

You know that scene in Full Metal Jacket where the fat guy gets caught with the doughnuts and everybody else has to do push ups as a punishment?

    Evander is that fat guy.

Well, sniperguy is that fat guy actually but I don't think he's ever been in jail so it fucks up my point. Evander is probably more like Sgt. Frantz from Hamburger Hill. But he's still in jail, so that would fuck up my point too.

Allowing quotes but breaking any bbcode within them just as before wouldn't open the floodgates of goatse.

So? Allowing them to post at all does. There's nothing to stop them from hitting enter 100 times between two words and then submitting.

But you know what? No one does that after they're jailed. Know why? Because we'll just fucking ban them if they keep acting like a disruptive retard after getting jailed for breaking the rules.

It's a pain in the ass to read jailed people's posts. Which means they stand a higher chance of being ignored.

    See where I'm going here?

Oh, I know, but the thing is that's not really a good thing when you have people in long involved conversations on one part of the forums, and then one person fucks around a bit somewhere else, gets jailed, and all of a sudden you've got a bunch of people trying to understand their posts back in spot one and it's a problem.

We all know why bbcode is disabled. That's not what's being questioned here.

Exactly my point. I was bored and tried to start reading that thread on page 70, and failed miserably. It wasn't worth the trouble trying to figure out who was saying what.

It is removed. That's not the problem. The problem is quotes they made just prior to being jailed. All of your bbcode goes to shit when you get jailed.

It's a preventative measure against goatse spammers. Once someone starts, a deputy can jail them and they're boned.

Actually, there is. Their posts would be truncated.

The way jailing works is very much a code hack, not a full code mod. We flat up disable all parsing of the user's post text. For me to change it to do selective parsing would be a complete pain in the ass, and then there is always the issue of BBCode parsing in the name field ie :

So, the long and the short of it is : no, I can't do that.
