First time PAXer, first time poster.. but I'm from Seattle, and I can't believe this thread hasn't been created yet.

Seattle is somewhat known for having a wide selection of well rated craft beers. Here is a list of some of them. Feel free to add to the list with your own recommendations. A lot of these beers won't be offered in bottles - you'll have to get a pint from the brewery, or buy a growler, fill it up, and take it home (might be tough to find room for a growler in your suitcase though). I will mark the ones that you are likely to find around town at pubs with a *

Georgetown Brewing Company - http://www.georgetownbeer.com
One of my favorite brewers. Just simple, good, beer.
*Manny's Pale Ale - Easy to drink, great taste. Possibly my favorite all around beer. Most pubs serve it. Great go-to beer.
Roger's Pilsner - harder to find, but still a great beer.
Bob's Beer Brown Ale - Haven't tried this one yet. Chocolaty?
Chopper's Red Ale - Haven't tried this one yet either.
9 Lb Porter - Heavy.

Elysian Brewing Company - http://www.elysianbrewing.com
*Immortal IPA - Sturdy, but not heavy, Refreshingly hoppy. Flagship beer.
Dragontooths Stout - Sturdy, rich and velvety. Malty, smooth and chocolatey.
Perseus Porter - Full-bodied, creamy and smooth. Rich, dark, and slightly smoky.
The Wise ESB - Golden copper in color. Malty, hoppy, toasted and orangey.
Zephyrus Pilsner - Light and crisp. Solid malt with spicy hop flavor.
Elysian Fields Pale Ale - Medium-weight Slightly fruity, yet crisp.
Seasonals: Avatar Jasmine IPA, Ambrosia Maibock, Bete Blanche Belgian Style Tripel,

Pyramid Ales and Lagers - http://www.pyramidbrew.com
*Hefeweizen - Refreshing Summer Beer, served with a Lemon. One of my favs
Apricot Weizen - These guys know their Weizens. A little fruity for me.
Amber Weizen - Doesn't go down as easy as the "Hef"
*Thunderhead IPA - Not bad. Good session beer, but under hopped for an IPA
Summer Seasonal: *Curveball Kolsch - I love this beer. One of my favs.

The Pike Brewing Company - http://www.pikebrewing.com/
More info: http://www.pikebrewing.com/images/2april08_pikechart_01.jpg
*Kilt Lifter - smokey and malty
Pike Pale - More like an Amber than Pale
Naughty Nellie - Crisp and refreshing
*IPA - It's an IPA
XXXXX Stout - Like drinking a meal
Weisse - Wheat beer

Mac & Jacks - http://www.macandjacks.com/
*African Amber - Interesting lingering flavor, I really like this beer, definitely worth a try.
Serengetti Wheat - Quite Wheaty, refreshing
IPA - Very drinkable, not overwhelmed by hops in such a way it’s almost hard to drink.
Blackcat Porter - Coffee porter, not too thick for a porter..

Redhook - http://www.redhook.com/
These guys are a little bigger than others on this list (Save Pyramid maybe..). Not my favorite brewer, for sure.. So I won't say much about these..
*ESB - Flagship beer
Longhammer IPA - fairly easy drinker - for an ipa.
*Blonde - probably my fave redhook.
Blackhook porter - meal in a glass
Copperhook - Spring seasonal. kinda sweet.
Sunrye - Summer seasonal. Lighter beer, refreshing.

Hales Ales - http://halesales.com/
Drawbridge Blonde - Was a summer seasonal, nor yearround. Crisp and refreshing
*Pale American - Easy to drink
Cream Ale - smooth and creamy
Cream HSB - Amber and bitter.
Troll Porter - complex - not for the weak
Mongoose IPA - lots of hops
Red Menace Amber - Great Amber
Cream Stout - Dublin style CO2

Other noteable breweries: Maritime Pacific Brewing Company, Lazy Boy Brewing, SkuttleButt Brewing, Elliott Bay Brewing Company, McMenamin, Big Time Brewery.

That's it from me!

Glad someone put it out there. Redhook and Pyramid I think are overrated, especially for what they cost here in TX but Elysian Brewing is great.

When my friends and I go out, we usually get pitchers of Mac & Jacks. I usually buy Pyramid for drinking at home. There are some good beers around here.

    Mac & Jack's is excellent.

The Pyramid Brewery is a great place to drink when there are Mariner games because it's right next to SafeCo. Place gets packed. Only if you like Hefs and such of course.

They make a pretty good IPA.

There is also the Six Arms right up the street from PAX, which has some awesome microbrews. And cajunized tots, which it would be criminal not to try.

You should just try to get everyone in the pub crawl to go to some of the places so they can have real Washington home brews.

Went there last week actually, but it was a 'business' lunch, so we didn't try any of the beers. Which is a shame, as they have like 160 on tap. Really nice place though, and the food is good.

OK, so anyone got a good location on a packie (aka place to buy beer) near the convention center or resturuants that have some good food and said Ales?

I wanted to post another recommendation for the Tap House simply because it's across the street from PAX. If you love beer and want to stay close to the convention, this is definitely a great place to hang out. It's a little pricey but well worth the 160 beer selection. They have tons of local seasonals.

I also recommend Collin's pub down on 2nd and James. It's smaller but they have a decent selection of microbrews and good food. My favorite beer bar in Seattle, however, is Brower's in Fremont... they have a crazy selection of Belgian beers.

Does anyone know anything about shipping liquor to California? I really want to pick up some local brews and send them back home so they'll be there waiting for me when I get back. Can a brewery possibly help or am I just assed out?

Liquor is going to have different laws than beer. You might want to check into the beer-specific laws when it comes to shipping microbrews.

Yeah, I know in WA you can only ship Wine.. but I don't know if the applies to both receiving AND shipping ..or just receiving. But for the most part, I wouldn't worry about it.. just ship it.

Here is a link to the raw laws.. http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=66.24

And here is a link to an easier interpretation of the laws: http://wineinstitute.shipcompliant.com/StateDetail.aspx?StateId=16

Basically, you can receive shipments of wine as a consumer. but the shipper must have a license, and conform to the rules (special shipping label, and pay taxes). That link has info on the other states too. As consumers, we aren't allowed to receive shipments of liquor or beer though..

stupid laws for stupid state owned monopolies.
