Necroposting - a question

YarYar Registered User regular
Can someone explain the new hatred of necroposting and the related threats from mods? What exactly is "necroposting"?

If we feel that threads don't disappear soon enough, I imagine it's an easy enough fix to set the expiration to a much shorter time period. We still have the memorable threads for the ones that deserve to be kept around.

I assumed that any thread still open and alive is a thread that can be posted in. Why else are they still there?

I searched for more information but couldn't find any.

The hatred of necroposting comes from the old M2 days when the board moved at a frenzied pace. Our board still moves much faster than many so when an old topic is bumped, even from the bottom of the first page, you can piss off people because they've finished talking about it and have moved on to newer, but not necessarily better, topics.

I would recommend against bumping anything from page 2. It's just poor form in a culture that screams 'omg old' to information 4 hours old.

Posting in "dead" threads has always been looked down on here because, essentially by letting a thread "die," the forum's said they're tired of a topic and are ready to move on.

Like deni says, we move quickly here (and we used to move MUCH, MUCH faster in the M2 days), so a thread dies here once it hits page 2. In contrast, a smaller, slower forum like TTB or CoT would be less likely to get upset if you bumped a thread from page 2. Things just move slower there so it's less of a big deal.

Part of the problem also stems from the fact that most of the time, when people reply to dead threads, they do it by simply posting "bump." Often, the people who do this are bumping their own thread, as they feel they didn't get enough attention, et cetera. Naturally this raises the ire of the forum.

I hate it when dead threads get bumped. What I don't mind though is when someone bumps an old thread with a new, key bit of information, a link to something cool and applicable, or just a thoughtful post that makes an overlooked point.

Problem is, nobody does this. People bump dead threads to just say "bump" or reply to someone who said "omg" by saying "lol" and the like.

It's not exactly a new hatred so much as something that's only recently been codified. Most people don't care if you bump something for a good reason, like an update. Bumping a thread on the verge of being autopruned to tell everyone about the ham sandwich you just had (just to be an ass, as opposed to having an actual, genuine interest) is a much more stereotypical instance of necroposting.

Page two...? Man thats harsh. I often bump threads from page two - normally my own threads asking for computer support in G&T which die without feedback from me. Sometimes it's just threads which I've been keeping up on the discussion with and which died down overnight. I've never had complaints though - I guess so long as you still have something worthwhile to say besides OMG BUMP'D LOLZ! people can't really complain. Right?

I dunno, maybe I'm just the exception to CONGRATULATIONS! rule.

You also have the other side, that people want to to go post in a thread on Page 20 instead of making a new one.

    "use search lol!"

"Use search" tends to be said to people who are asking a question that using search would have answered, or to people who make an "OMG GUYZ HAV U S33N THIS?!?!?!?!1111?!?" thread, because yes, everyone's seen it, and using search could have told them that.

I thought we got pissed because people bumped threads without adding any insight or usefulness to the discussion.

I often bump threads on page 2 because when I last visited the board they were at the top of page 1. I dunno if that counts.

FWIW I've also been commended in the past for resurrecting a thread because I came across some new info directly relevant to the topic that was being discussed. It seems that that kind of thing isn't really frowned on (in my experience) and I think that's a good thing.

As I suspected, it seems there isn't really a clear agreement on what necroposting is. My problem with it, like others have noted here, is that we don't like repeat threads on the same topic when someone could post in and old one, and yet we don't like posting in old ones, either. That's a little bit of a catch-22.

If page 2 = death, then why have a page 2? After going past page one, a thread should either be logged or disappear.

As for posting without adding anything, that's bad regardless of what page it's on.

It's orders of magnitude more indicative of asshattery when they go looking for something dead just to be that much more of a retard.

Anyone remember Juan? Didn't think so. He used to bump his own threads incessantly. It's the only reason they stuck around for so long, and it's also the reason I first began to dislike him. Pi used to do it as well.

What did Juan and Pi have in common again? Answers on a postcard.

Isn't there a limit on how far back you can necropost? Like if you post in the very last thread on the very last page, does that still bump it all the way to the top? Because sometimes I post in a thread still on the front page and it doesn't go anywhere.

Normal threads are ordered by the time of the last post. In forums where there's a lot of activity, a thread can easily get pushed back down by more recent posts in other threads..

i would say the rule is more of a "don't bump threads for stupid reasons, and the older the thread, the better the reason should be"
