It doesn't really work. You can have a power ring, etc. but you will not be able to be a Green Lantern when you make your character, and whatever ring you can have will not be a GL ring. They're trying to figure out how to have that as some sort of high level reward or status, but considering the game's universe is meant to be a pure, iconic version of the DC universe, it makes a lot of sense to me that you can't just "roll" a Green Lantern.
It'd make sense if you had to get the attention of the Corps first, either by doing a series or quests or maxing out a stat that is analogous to willpower.
Maybe they should just think about giving you one of the other types of ring - I doubt that all of the Corps will have all 7200 members featured in absolute detail.

I'm a tad leery of that method in practice (although I like it in theory) because of what I heard about SWG and Jedi, plus the whole balance thing (make it hard enough, and you're going to expect a big reward, etc).
In any case, power rings are in. It's not like a GL ring would be as flexible as you'd want in a game anyway. No way to make up brand new objects on the fly. Having the information stored in a GL ring database would be nuts.
I'd imagine they'll be able to implement it as an epic hero class: after your hero was sufficiently impressive, the appropriate corp could contact them and offer them a new position. It might involve erasing your old powers, etc.
I'd really like to see the other corps (coming up in Blackest Night) do the same.

There will inevitably be people who specialize in healing, just as there will be people who specialize in taking damage. While the game may not be set up in such a way as to force these roles, people will still take them.
