[CthulhuTech On - OOC] The Forgotten Fugue

edited December 2008 in Critical Failures
What the hell is CthulhuTech? It's a independent game being published by Catalyst Game Labs (formerly Mongoose Publishing). I'll let the developers give a better description of what it's about:
CthulhuTech is an innovative storytelling game that started out as a combination of two popular genres. The first was that of cosmic horror, made popular by H.P. Lovecraft and culminating in the modern day with elements of Mike Mignola's Hellboy and John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness. The second was that of giant mecha Japanese animation, made popular by such series as Robotech, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Rahxephon. But the setting has grown far beyond what it started out to be. CthulhuTech is now a truly unique hybrid of genres – cosmic horror, anime, post-apocalypse, traditional horror, and science fiction blended together seamlessly.

That being said, if I ran a game, it would be a little bit on the side of HP Lovecraft with the anime aspects in the background. So, is anyone interested in a game?

BTW, the website for the game is at http://cthulhutech.com

Hmmm...I love all things Lovecraftian, but I don't know if I like that 'anime' in there.

I'll check it out though. Mechs are the only facet of anime I do like.

hmm I like mechs as well. Any idea what the specific story focus would be?

I don't know much about the setting. Some of it looks decent/good (if you view Lovecraft beasts in a more Hellboy light or akin to the horrors in an anime like Blue Gender). Others parts looke a bit weird (the exotic gray folk).

I'm interested. I assume we'd have sufficient time to aquire the requisite source materials after confirmation that there would be a game?

So, I'll be using the ol' trope of "You guys all have amnesia" at the start. I have a fairly interesting story planned around it and it has the added metagame benefit that you don't have to be familiar with the world when we start playing.

To expand on it a little, the characters will all be members of the the Office of Internal Security, which is a sort of FBI for magic in this setting. They track magical purchases, track down and arrest sorcerers who have gone insane from the dark knowledge they have seen, investigate various other weird stuff. The main arc will be ultimately regarding your amnesia, but there will also be sub-arcs dedicated to investigation of various weird occult stuff.

As far as source materials, I'll be providing you guys with information on how to create characters, but not much else. This should be enough, given the set up for the game. Since both your character and you will be lacking any knowledge of the world, if you have a question, your character probably has the same question and should ask or operate in the dark. ;)

Oh wow, I remember hearing about this on a Lovecraft site I frequent years ago and then never hearing about it again. Didn't figure it would ever actually come out.

its kind of a cool idea, at least.

I saw this book at my LGS the other day, thought 'I might get that if anyone would ever ever ever play a game of it' and then decided that nobody ever would.

But uh hey. I guess I could be interested in this. Very very interested.

Okay, well, it looks like I have enough people interested to warrant a game.

So, here are my thoughts. Once a week, we'll do IRC sessions and the in-between will be occupied with casual PbP. Does this work? If so, what days is everyone free to do an IRC session?

I could do that. Any time between Friday and Monday would be ideal for me.

Also would you mind a bit of pestering over Google Talk about the game? Some questions about just how much of this or that setting element we should expect and the like. :)

I really should have picked this book up earlier.

Looking through it now, this stuff is amazing-awesome. I'm thinking an Engel Pilot right now, who is willing to take any kind of risk, and ignore any orders, in order to achieve mission success.

Who also tries sculpting in her (limited) spare time, trying to depict the things she sees in her dreams and while piloting. Unfortunately she's really not too good at it.

Tagers are an absolute yes. The Eldritch Society does have several covert agreements with various agencies in the New Earth Government, including the OIS. That's no problem.

Mechs and Engels are a little trickier. From an out-of-character perspective, it's hard to integrate such a huge piece of machinery with a group of otherwise normal-sized characters. It'd be sort of like one person playing a naval destroyer and everyone else is playing a normal dude.

That being said, I'm not going to rule it out completely. If you want to play a mech pilot or an engel pilot, let me know and I'll try to think how I can work it all together. However, also be prepared with an alternative character idea in case I throw my hands up in the air and say "Fuck it. I can't do this."

Considering your plot, would we be a tager based team? Or would you want more variety ?

Whatever. My general philosophy with running games is that you guys should pick the character you want to play and I'll try to build the campaign around your choices. So, no need for anyone to play a cleric even though they really don't want to.

In the interests of covering my back if piloting an Engel doesn't work out, I'll write up a Tager. Because (a) Tagers are awesome, (b) if we're all Tagers that would be pretty cool, and (c) because the other professions seem a little lame compared to Engels and Tagers. Or I might do a power-armor pilot. That would probably be simpler.

Yeah that's right. No super powers....except some psychic shenanigans. But otherwise just guns!

Freakin' Tagers, think they're so special with their ineffable beings from another dimension that are probably going to make them flip out and kill us all.

I acquired a pdf of the Core book. I am going to be getting a real copy of the book as soon as possible, as I stopped by my LGS today and they had sold the copy I intended to acquire.

So I'm phoning them tomorrow and getting them to order another copy in(as well as the supplements) for me.

EDIT: Also, I'm cool enough to not read the GM chapters. I like being in the dark completely.
