Captain America: Now With 20% More Angst!

CAPTAIN AMERICA:
ca41rs0.jpg
The best Marvel book. Period.

I mean, he even has his own...
Tinny Vidja Game Theme!

When The Dark Knight came out, every non-comics reader went all bananas and shit because it was all moody and dark. Well, you know, great movie and all, but you don't know brooding mystery men until you've read Ed Brubaker's Captain America. Relentlessly downtrodden (though perhaps not to the same extent as Brubaker's Daredevil or Criminal), this Captain America title is filled with action, espionage, and enough super-hero-time-traveling-soap-opera nonsense to sate even the most jaded of comic book fans.

It is awesome.

Issue #41 came out last Wednesday, the penultimate chapter to The Death of the Dream Act III: The Man Who Bought America. In it, Bucky Barnes, the new Captain America, kicks some major ass and basically all sorts of major shit is about to go down next issue. You should probably be reading it.
How To Catch Up:

CAPTAIN AMERICA OMNIBUS

Packed with the first 25 issues of Brubaker's epic (and some special issues, like the House of M crossover), which leads right in to the "Death of Captain America" arc, this is obviously the best place to start, especially considering that Brubaker's run on the title is essentially one continuing story. You can get it for $40 from Amazon, which is totally a bargain!

THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 1
Issues #25-30

51olJ2weIpL._SS500_.jpg
THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 2
Issues #31-36

Then, uh, just buy issues #37-41. You won't regret it!

--
So, I know I'm not the only one here that reads and loves this title. What do you guys think?

It is an amazing book. The newest one..
Dr. Faustus just Hocus Pocus'd her memory of the baby so she could function without grief, right? I guess it wouldn't make sense for Skull to want her so bad if she was never pregnant.

I think it speaks for itself that the book can scare people with a clone saga and still wind up making it a great story.

I love the way SHIELD are handled in the series. The espionage stuff is always brilliant.

Falcon is great too. He's really grown on me as the story has progressed.

The one thing I will say against the book is that I felt like Brubaker sort of rushed getting Bucky into the Captain America suit, but that was probably something that his editors wanted and it got the story moving into high gear, so

I love the whole spy and espionage thing going on. Were older Captain America books ever like that to this extent, or was this something Brubaker bought to the table?

I hope Bucky wears the flag for a long time to come. I loved Steve Rogers. The original Cap is my second favorite Marvel hero (behind Daredevil) but Brubaker's run has just been so damn good that I don't want it to change. I'm behind Captain Bucky 100%.

I'm hoping that after the conclusion of "Death of Captain America" they release another Omnibus, or at least a oversized hardcover for 26-42. It's a long shot but I can dream.

Because they love money? I'm not buying any more Cap until the next Omnibus and/or Oversized HC comes out, because we all know they will the day after I give in and buy the individual trades.

    Same deal with Bru's Daredevil.

I gotta say that although I've never been a regular reader of Captain America, his post 9-11 terrorist bashing stories were awesome(from what I read). Really brought the Captain back to his morale boosting roots, I think. If only there had been an issue where he was punching Bin Laden in the face....

Because that seems like a natural breakpoint given that it wraps up the arc started with the first omnibus, plus people would buy it. But really, I'm am waiting for the next omnibus regardless and I'm just impatient.

The only downside to this is that Cap's origin story is now complex.

It used to be "That dude is a dude who fought in WW2 but got frozen now he's in the present and kicking ass". Now it's all "Well there was this guy... but now he got shot because of this thing.... now his partner, who's not dead anymore but we thought he was, but he was in russia and now he's the Captain annnd..."

Which is a small price to pay for really amazingly well-done stories I suppose.

Hm. I wonder how many superhero origins you can sum up in a sentence?

To be honest I really don't like that Bucky's taken up the Captain America identity. Using the sheild is fine, and I could deal with him chang his outfit to something closer to Cap's, but changing his look entirely from a somewhat realistic and practical soldier get-up to Captain America II: Shiny Edition is a bit much.

    Plus it looks ridiculous.

I think the new Cap suit looks cool. It is very much the Bucky suit. Bucky isn't Steve Rogers. As we've learned from the Winter Soldier storyline, Bucky was the one who could do the jobs that Cap couldn't. He was the one who could slip behind enemy lines and assassinate the sentries and do other "dirty jobs." His new Cap suit very much reflects the fact that he is not the same person that Steve Rogers was.

Also, I don't know if you've actually been following the storyline or not, but Bucky is still very much conflicted about wearing the flag. He's not comfortable with it, and he feels like he isn't living up to his mentor. Not to mention the fact that Bucky still has a strong presence as himself. You still see quite a bit of his metallic arm and all of that.

I think the new suit is fine, and I think that Brubaker has done a great job of distinguishing the new Cap from the old.

Rushed it? Man, Brubaker spent like a year getting Bucky into the suit. That'd be the one thing I would say against an otherwise awesome book, that after Cap died the story went practically nowhere for like 12 issues. Plus, wasn't there a plot thread involving Lukin/the Skull trying to get working some device belonging to Dr. Doom? What happened with that? Seems like it's been more or less forgotten now with the whole senator whatsisface thing.
