The Athens double-barreled cannon - today on display in downtown Athens, Ga. - was designed to fire "chain shot," two cannonballs connected by a heavy chain, and was intended to mow down large formations of enemy troops like a giant scythe.

I have about 20 of those sitting on top my computer desk. I remember having to use them after Apple stopped installing floppy drives in their Macs and before flash drives became popular.

There is a definite tactile pleasure in using floppy discs and by extension zip discs.

I mean my laptop autofeeds cds into its drive (mbp) and that's just not as fun as the manual pushing in and mechanical button release of floppy drives.

Plus, when you got PC games in the old days you were getting your fucking moneys worth. dozens of floppy discs all over the place. Nowadays some games I buy are actually nothing, just air, downloaded over the internet.

I miss the days when you had to run programs from a floppy instead of installing at all. Talking late 80s computing here.

I remember that when minidisks first came out everyone was saying that they would replace the cd, but it didn't work that way seeing as no one bought into it.

You could store music on them in Sony's proprietary compression scheme called ATRAC or some such.

Dunno. Did Sony make any ATRAC capable CD players? Pretty sure no on else used the format.

They did, I remember having a cd player that allowed me to save songs on the ATRAC format that held like up to 100* songs per cd depending on the compression.

Man I just got a ZIP disc drive installed on my computer, serial connection and all.

Sure, I may never need it, but they're saying the same about floppies, and they'll never get it from me.

    *shifty eyes*

Helps that it cost a total of $15 in total to buy three drives looking for one that worked.

    no
other than the backwards compatibility thing, minidiscs would be a good replacement for cds and dvds if they could fit all their shit onto them

because if someone asks for a cd you have to hand it to them carefully and treat if like a fucking princess so it dont get scratched
minidiscs you could dropkick from across the room and get it to them on the rebound

No, because if they didn't do this, you would need like six to ten cartridges to fit a single game on.
