I'll have to make do with Cadfael and Avengers 65.
Cadfael
Hell yes
I just read one of those books this week and I'm about to start in on another in which Cadfael kicks ass from the safety and sanctity of his Benedictine robes
Oh man, I haven't read those in ages. Good books. The TV series was cool too.
If I ever get over my aversion to buying TV shows on DVD I will buy that one first
I am trying to get my boyfriend to read one but he's all "I don't like mysteries" and I'm all "but noooo these ones are gooood"
But it's basically Zep riffs incorporated into Neil's music. It comes out really well, and my stepdad's charismatic as all hell on stage. It's weird to think that my mom went from my dad, the angry little Cotton Hill-esque troll, to that man.
I picked up an Antec EarthWatts 500W psu for my new build at Fry's for $90+tax, but now, after reading some newegg reviews, it doesn't seem like the best value, but now I don't really know what to get >.<

Posting on a forum is still a step above where I spent all my writing skills on, but yeah, seriously anyone who can just write to write should be writing to write in a manner they can benefit from.

What IS a good mystery series? Because Sherlock Holmes is more silly than anything else.
The problem with most mainstream mystery books is they have shallow characters, contrived plots, and bad writing.
Brother Cadfael stories have zero of these things. Notice I did not mention predictability. Yes it is possible to guess the murderer in these books, but you have so much fun getting into the medieval world that you don't particularly mind your own hunch playing out as true.

Douglas Adams is about 3% as good as people say he is.
Which means he's still a pretty fun read.
I agree that he is vastly over hyped. Amazingly so. So, if you take about 3% of that it's still fun stuff.
Of course, I should preface that fact that when I read dirk gently it was days after a near death experienced, laid up in an all inclusive resort on the mayan riveria, bleeding, while having a constant supply of free drinks ferried out to me.

Eh, I think the percentage changes as you read more of Hitchhiker. When I first started reading, I would probably have given him a good 85-90%. Having finished 2.5 of the Hitchhiker books, it's more like 30% for me, because his writing style and particular brand of "wit" gets old real soon. If I ever got bored enough to finish the series, I'd imagine the value would asymptotically approach your value.
I'm not generally a "fun" kind of reader... for me reading is mostly about studying, which is kind of obnoxious, but I haven't been able to relax about it. I have too many books I -need- to read right now to read for joy.
Senj: Are those all "literary quality" or "genre quality?"

I finished the first, was glad I read it, and never felt compelled to read more. I was pretty much done with that by the end of the first book. It was fine for that much though.

With an open bar, a John McCain speech would read as something fantastic.

I've read all of Douglas Adams's published work and wish there were more to read. It's one of those subjective things.
I will confess that I've read restaurant at the end of the universe about 13 times. It was like, 13 times back to back. To be fair, I kept forgetting to bring a new book to school and past like the 7th time through I could read through that thing in like 40 minutes tops.

"THE SOLUTION IS THAT SNAKES DRINK MILK!"
Whut.
Not exactly super heavy mystery stuff though.
