    Cadfael

    Hell yes

I just read one of those books this week and I'm about to start in on another in which Cadfael kicks ass from the safety and sanctity of his Benedictine robes

Oh man, I haven't read those in ages. Good books. The TV series was cool too.

If I ever get over my aversion to buying TV shows on DVD I will buy that one first

I am trying to get my boyfriend to read one but he's all "I don't like mysteries" and I'm all "but noooo these ones are gooood"

But it's basically Zep riffs incorporated into Neil's music. It comes out really well, and my stepdad's charismatic as all hell on stage. It's weird to think that my mom went from my dad, the angry little Cotton Hill-esque troll, to that man.

The problem with most mainstream mystery books is they have shallow characters, contrived plots, and bad writing.

Brother Cadfael stories have zero of these things. Notice I did not mention predictability. Yes it is possible to guess the murderer in these books, but you have so much fun getting into the medieval world that you don't particularly mind your own hunch playing out as true.

And now I am REALLY going to bed.

I agree that he is vastly over hyped. Amazingly so. So, if you take about 3% of that it's still fun stuff.

Of course, I should preface that fact that when I read dirk gently it was days after a near death experienced, laid up in an all inclusive resort on the mayan riveria, bleeding, while having a constant supply of free drinks ferried out to me.

Eh, I think the percentage changes as you read more of Hitchhiker. When I first started reading, I would probably have given him a good 85-90%. Having finished 2.5 of the Hitchhiker books, it's more like 30% for me, because his writing style and particular brand of "wit" gets old real soon. If I ever got bored enough to finish the series, I'd imagine the value would asymptotically approach your value.

I'm not generally a "fun" kind of reader... for me reading is mostly about studying, which is kind of obnoxious, but I haven't been able to relax about it. I have too many books I -need- to read right now to read for joy. :/

I finished the first, was glad I read it, and never felt compelled to read more. I was pretty much done with that by the end of the first book. It was fine for that much though.
